Number of PNP officers killed in Maguindanao clash rises to 50

Muslim women from several organizations in Metro Manila rally outside the Senate on Monday, January 26, to call for the immediate passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The number of police officers killed in a clash against suspected members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Maguindanao has risen to 50, a regional police official said Monday. Senior Superintendent Noel Armilla, director of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), revealed that the number went up from Sunday, when at least 30 elite police officers were reportedly killed. The fatalities were members of the PNP’s elite Special Action Force. Authorities are now focused on recovering the bodies of these police officers. Meanwhile, Mamasapano Mayor Benzar Ampatuan confirmed that two civilians were injured in the gun battle, which happened in Barangay Tukanalipao, it added. Sources said the police operation was to serve an arrest warrant on Malaysian bombmaker Zulkifli Bin Hir, also known as “Marwan,” whose presence had been confirmed in the area. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has offered a $5-million reward for information on “Marwan.” Leaders of the MILF has said the government did not coordinate with them for the said operation. MILF leader: ‘Not logical’ to delay Bangsamoro process after Maguindanao clash

Senator Bongbong Marcos speaks with Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago during the hearing on the Bangsamoro Basic Law, Monday morning. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – A top leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) said it is “not logical to delay” the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BLL), despite the firefight between their group and elite police officers in Maguindanao province on Sunday. In an interview, Ghadzali Jaafar, MILF vice chairman for political affairs, said doing so “will be [a] disadvantage to all parties concerned,” particularly to those residing in the concerned area. Jaafar said: “I don’t think it will affect discussions of the BBL, I don’t think this should delay the process.” “’Pag na-delay [nang] masyadong matagal ang pagiging batas ng BBL, … made-delay ang establishment ng Bangsamoro government, which is a negotiated political solution to the conflict in Mindanao. So ‘pag walang Bangsamoro government sapagkat na-delay ito, sapagkat walang batas ito, walang BBL, ‘yung situation sa Mindanao remain(s) as it is,” he said. He added that “technically, there is still war in Mindanao, because what we have only here now is a ceasefire agreement.” ‘No coordination made’ While he “cannot categorically” say that MILF members first opened fire in the clash, Jaafar echoed the information earlier given by MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal, who said it was triggered by lack of coordination on the operation of the PNP-Special Action Force. “Hindi ko nga alam kung sino ang unang nagpaputok, but what I can categorically pronounce now is Read More …

DOTC’s admission of lack of authority enough reason to stop light rail fare hike: Bayan Muna

An unusually big number of commuters stand shoulder-to-shoulder while waiting for their train ride at the Metro Rail Transit (MRT)-3 station on Taft Avenue and Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Pasay City on Thursday morning (March 27, 2014). The commuters, coming from as far as Cavite, are bound for their places of work in Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, San Juan and Quezon City. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – The Department of Transportation and Communication’s (DOTC) admission that it lacked authority to raise the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) fares is enough grounds for the Supreme Court to stop the fare hike, a lawmaker said Monday. Party-list Bayan Muna filed a manifestation with the Supreme Court last Friday, reiterating its call to stop the fare hike based on DOTC Undersecratery Jose Lotilla’s admission that the agency lacked authority for the fare increase, Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate told participants to the Kapihan sa Diamond Hotel. “Wala silang ginawang hearing [for the fare hike]; consultations lang. Inamin din ng DOTC through Usec. Lotilla na walang regulatory body pertaining to rails, trains,” he said. “DOTC cannot cite any law on granting rate hike. Nakikita namin na malakas ‘yung paniniwala namin na merong basehan na mag-issue ng TRO ang Supreme Court,” Zarate added. Last January 13, the high tribunal thumbed down the petitions of four groups against the fare hike but required DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, LRT Authority Administrator Honorito Chaneco, MRT 3 Officer-in-Charge Renato San Jose, the MRT Read More …

Euro gains, Asia stocks advance on Greece deal hopes

People walk by an electronic stock board of a securities firm in Tokyo on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015. Most Asian equities climbed on hopes Greece’s new government will be able to negotiate a bailout deal that will stop it leaving the eurozone. AP PHOTO/KOJI SASAHARA HONG KONG–The euro extended its gains against the dollar Tuesday while most Asian equities climbed on hopes Greece’s new government will be able to negotiate a bailout deal that will stop it leaving the eurozone. Regional dealers were given a lift from advances in Europe and New York, where news of Sunday’s Greek election win for anti-austerity party Syriza had been largely factored in, analysts said. However, Hong Kong and Shanghai suffered heavy losses as traders booked profits after a rally over the past week. Tokyo rallied 1.72 percent, or 299.78 points, to 17,768.30, Sydney added 0.82 percent, or 45.38 points, to close at 5,547.2 and Seoul rose 0.86 percent, or 16.72 points, to close at 1,952.40. But Shanghai fell 0.89 percent, or 30.22 points, to 3,352.96 and Hong Kong eased 0.41 percent, or 102.62 points, to 24,807.28. Shanghai had rallied more than eight percent since last Monday, when it posted its biggest loss since mid-2008 in response to a government crackdown on margin-trading. Markets have been buoyed by rhetoric coming out of Athens and from Greece’s EU and IMF creditors that raised hopes the two sides can reach an agreement over repaying its 240 billion euro ($270 billion) bailout. Syriza had campaigned on renegotiating terms of Read More …

H2O floats amphibious Salamander Concept: The answer to our flood-prone streets?

MANILA, Philippines – Floods have become an all-too-common occurrence in the Philippines. In the past year alone, weeks of productivity have been literally washed away due to the cancellation of work and school. In fact, 42,000 barangays nationwide have been identified as flood-prone and both the private and public sector are pumping out money and resources just to ensure the safety not just of their property, but more importantly, of lives as well. Although flooding cannot be solved in the short- and even medium-term, H2O Technologies, Inc., a privately owned and run Filipino company, may have a solution on their hands with the Salamander. A product of five years of work, the Salamander is the country’s first amphibious tricycle. It’s available with two powerplants: a gasoline-powered 250cc engine and a 5-kW pure-electric motor. Both versions can go into institutional service as early as this year with private sales starting as early as 2016. Chief Engineer Lamberto Armada explained that the decision to make the Salamander available in two versions is deliberate because of the limitation of electric vehicle technology. With no expansive charging station network, the Salamander must be usable in any situation, especially in far-flung areas with no access to electricity. Still, the company is ready to shift to more sustainable and eco-friendly vehicles in the near future. “The Salamander fits well into the Philippine landscape requirements,” said David Ong, Chairman of the Board for H2O Technologies. “When you look at what the country needs in order to begin Read More …

We lost the Miss Universe crown. And with it, our national pride. We couldn’t even win the Best in Gown title. How could we? The public sentiment is that the gown didn’t look Filipino at all. And social netizens say that it wasn’t even nice. “Huhu, parang plain white cake with colorful icings,” said James Ramos. “MJ Lastimosa’s national costume reminded me of my sister’s birthday cake,” posted Raffy Magno. The Bb. Pilipinas-Universe candidate was wearing a gown by a Colombian designer, Alfredo Barraza, who is being tortured now in social media for creating a confectionary mix of red and yellow flowers. Bb. Pilipinas chairperson Stella Marquez-Araneta says it was “inspired by the Panagbenga festival of Baguio.” Maria Stella Marquez Sawadzky won the first Miss International pageant in 1960 held in Long Beach, California. And she also won the heart of Jorge Araneta, head of the esteemed clan that owns Araneta Coliseum, the choice venue of beauty pageants for decades now. “The designs given to us were not good enough for our candidates. Isuzu Crosswind hits 100,000-unit milestone (and still going strong)

MANILA, Philippines – The ever-popular Isuzu Hilander and Crosswind, which have been Isuzu Philippines Corporation’s (IPC) bestselling nameplates for nearly two decades, have now reached their 100,000th-unit production mark. To celebrate the milestone, IPC on January 21, held a program highlighting the 100,000th Crosswind to roll off its manufacturing plant at the Laguna Technopark in Binan. Leading the ceremony was IPC president Nobuo Izumina, who was joined by other company officials and team members from the production line. “Today, the 100,000th Isuzu Crosswind comes out of the assembly line. This is a vehicle that holds a special place in Isuzu Philippines Corporation’s history as it proves that vehicle manufacturing in the Philippines is a viable endeavor, and one that meaningfully contributes to national progress by generating employment and government revenue,” Izumina said.    The Hilander was first launched in 1997, around two years after IPC was established. The model was one of the first vehicles assembled by the company at its then-new world-class manufacturing facilities. Shortly after its introduction, the Hilander quickly established itself as a leader in the highly competitive local AUV segment, having 6,145 units assembled in its first year. However, the Asian financial crisis during the time impacted the domestic automotive industry, and so manufacturing and sales of the Hilander dipped in the following two years. Sales of the model picked up again in 2000, especially after the introduction of new variants like the XTRM. By mid-2001, IPC already created 17,391 Hilanders. During the same year, IPC followed Read More …
