Koko warns PCA about banned toxins being used against cocolisap

Senators Aquilino Pimentel III and Antonio Trillanes IV talk to reporters during the inspection of the alleged overpriced Makati Science High School Building on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Thursday cautioned the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) against advocating the use of a banned toxin to arrest the coconut infestation known as “cocolisap”. Pimentel issued the warning as Starkle, considered a “super toxin” banned abroad, is being reportedly advocated yet again by a local syndicate to justify a P170 million anti-cocolisap project. “Scientific evidence should be presented to back up the claims of the Starkle lobby that it is effective and safe for use to arrest the cocolisap infestation in the country,” Pimentel said. The entry of Starkle was stopped last year due to widespread protest by coconut farmers, who feared that the controversial toxin would endanger their livelihood instead of taming the pest. Pimentel disclosed that, at 54 hot spots or highly infested areas in the country, the pilot use of Starkle proved to be a dud, as the infestation was effectively neutralized, instead, by a non-toxic and cheaper organic solution. Pimentel said marginal farmers face the grim prospects of losing their livelihood because foreign coconut buyers are very critical against the use of banned chemicals in the exported products. He said he favored the use of the non-toxic, organic solution to protect the multi-million-peso coconut industry that provides livelihood to hundreds of thousands of rural workers, especially in Mindanao. PSEi posts 15th record finish

THE LOCAL stock barometer crept to its 15th record high for 2015 on Monday on selective buying by cash-awash investors. Rising for the seventh straight session, the Philippine Stock Exchange index added 0.68 points or 0.01 percent to close at 7,826.07. A new intra-day peak was also hit on 7,854.80, the 13th of such milestone for the year. The PSEi traded in the red for most of the day but firmed up in late trade. Dealers said there was just too much liquidity keeping stock prices at high levels. With many stocks hitting “overbought” levels, trading was mixed across counters, with the financial, property and mining/oil counters keeping the index afloat and making up for the slack in the industrial, holding firm and services counters. Despite the PSEi’s modest rise, market breadth was negative as there were more decliners (105) than advancers (81). Value turnover for the day amounted to P5.45 billion. The PSEi was led higher by RLC (+3.11 percent) and MPI (+1.98 percent) while ALI, Metrobank, BDO, BPI, ICTSI and DMCI also contributed gains. Outside of the PSEi, notable gainers were Unioil (+11.54 percent) and IS (+20.6 percent) which surged in relatively heavy volume. On the other hand, URC, EDC, AC, PLDT, SMIC, Jollibee and FGEN curbed the PSEi’s rise. Outside of PSEi, tech stock Xurpas was down by 3.34 percent. Across the region, stock markets were mostly buoyant on news of a bail-out package for debt-strapped Greece. Local stock brokerage DA Market Securities said indicators were pointing Read More …

DOH: Filipino from China who showed bird flu symptoms dies

MANILA, Philippines–A Filipino who worked in China for six years died after showing symptoms associated with avian influenza or bird flu, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Monday. In a press conference, Acting Health Secretary Janette Garin said that the Filipino worker decided to return to the country on Feb. 9 after feeling weak. Then after five days, he died from acute respiratory distress syndrome after suffering from cough, fever, and stomach pains. Garin said that the worker was first considered as a possible case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (MERS-CoV) but was reclassified as bird flu upon checking his work history. “Due to the symptoms he exhibited, the fast progression of the disease and the history of travel from China coupled with a history of being exposed to live poultry, the patient was considered a possible case of Avian Flu or Bird Flu,” the Health Secretary said. DOH did not conduct an autopsy on the victim as he was immediately cremated to prevent the spread of the virus. The health department declared the case as “closed” after initial results of pulmonary findings were found to be inconclusive. Meanwhile, the DOH allayed fears that the virus might spread as the worker’s death and cremation ended the possibility of transmission. “If indeed this patient contracted bird flu, his death has ended other possibility of transmission. Kaya wala po tayong dapat ikabahala (We do not have a reason to worry),” Garin added. The DOH appealed to overseas Filipino workers Read More …

SM Prime’s 2014 net profit up 13% to P18.4B

SY FAMILY-led property giant SM Prime Holdings Inc. grew net profit last year by 13 percent to P18.4 billion as the opening of new shopping malls and expansion of some old malls boosted rental income by a double-digit pace, complementing stable growth from mature retail hubs. Consolidated revenues rose by 11 percent to P66.2 billion, SMPH told the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday. “The encouraging financial performance in 2014 reiterates that the transformation of SM Prime into a property conglomerate is bearing fruits and trending above management expectations. We expect this performance to be surpassed this year as the company pursues its 2015 expansion plans with the opening of four new malls, the completion of FiveE-comCenter and the launch of five new housing projects. This is to complement the expansion of existing malls and on-going construction of high-rise residential development projects.” SM Prime president Hans Sy said in a press statement. SM Prime’s rental revenues from retail and commercial spaces grew by 13 percent to P36.5 billion in 2014, accounting for 55 percent of consolidated revenues. The increase in rental revenue was attributed mostly to the new malls that opened and the expansion of existing malls in 2013 and 2014, namely: SM Aura Premier in Taguig, SM City BF Parañaque, Mega Fashion Hall in SM Megamall in Mandaluyong, SM City Cauayan in Isabela province and SM Center Angono in Rizal province, which opened up additional gross floor area of 564,000 square meters. Growth was also partly attributed to TwoE- comCenter Read More …

DFA: Oplan Exodus ‘100% Filipino’

MANILA, Philippines — The Oplan Exodus, the operation that targeted top international terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan, was “100 percent Filipino,” the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday. “In our discussions with US authorities we have obtained that the plan and execution were 100 percent Filipino,” DFA Undersecretary for Policy Honorable Evan Garcia said at a Senate hearing The role of the United States has been questioned in the botched operation to capture the international terrorist, tagged as the Osama bin Laden of Southeast Asia. Marwan, who was reportedly killed in the operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, has a $5 million for the bounty on his head. The operation, executed by members of the Philippine National Police’s Special Action Force, resulted in the deaths of 44 SAF men. He did not clarify, however, if it was the US who provided intelligence information on Marwan. “We (respectfully) defer to our colleagues for operational details,” Garcia said. Under the Mutual Defense Board and Security and Engagement Board (MDB-SEB) between the Philippines and the United States, military exchange of intelligence information is allowed but US forces are restricted to combat activities. Reports surfaced that Americans were spotted in the area of operation at that time. “All counterterrorism exercises undertaken in Philippine territory require consent and approval through the PH-US MDB-SEB,” Garcia said. The bilateral activities between the two countries have helped to reduce, for instance, the size of terrorist group Abu Sayyaf, Garcia noted. RELATED STORIES ‘US behind Oplan Exodus’ US Read More …

Patricia Arquette calls for women's wage equality

Patricia Arquette accepts the award for best actress in a supporting role for “Boyhood” at the Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. John Shearer/Invision/AP LOS ANGELES — Meryl Streep cheered, pointed and shouted “Yes! Yes! Yes!” as Patricia Arquette ended her Oscar acceptance speech with a call for wage equality for women. Arquette, who won best actress for portraying the mother in “Boyhood,” had just beaten Streep out for the award and had read a long list of thank-yous and thrown in a plug for GiveLove.com, which advocates for ecological sanitation, when she changed themes. “To every woman who gave birth to every taxpayer and citizen in this nation: We have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality in the U.S.,” she said. The call to action, which seemed to take the audience by surprise, had many people on their feet and cheering. “Made my night,” Streep told Arquette backstage.”
