Analysts say Aquino can apologize for Mamasapano without saying ‘sorry’

PNoy poses for a selfie with DLSU Lady Spikers. President Benigno Aquino III poses for a selfie with members of the De La Salle University Lady Spikers during a luncheon meeting with the Ateneo de Manila University and men’s and women?s volleyball teams and the DLSU women?s volleyball team in Malacañang on Tuesday, March 24. Ryan Lim Critics and supporters alike had advised President Benigno Aquino III to apologize for the January 25 Mamasapano clash, but it was counsel the president has chosen to reject.  However, political analyst Prof. Prospero de Vera and public relations expert  Reli German told GMA 7’s “24 Oras” on Tuesday that the Aquino’s reluctance to apologize was understandable. “Yung salitang sorry ay nabahiran na ‘yan ng masama dahil sa ginawa ni Gloria Macapagal Arroyo noong panahon niya,” explained de Vera.  Instead of using the word “sorry”, it would be better and more accurate for the president to use another term, de Vera added. “Yung equivalent niyan sa Filipino ay mas malalim at mas mabigat ang dating sa taumbayan. ‘Yung pagtanggap ng pagkukulang at panghingi ng dispensa.” German was of the same mind. “Kalimutan na natin yung word na ‘sorry.’ I deeply regret, talagang kinalulungkot ko ang naganap doon. Inaako ko ang lahat bilang commander-in-chief at pangulo. At gagawin ko lahat ang aking makakaya upang hindi na ito ma ulit,” he advised. Both De Vera and German hoped the president will take the opportunity during Thursday’s Philippine National Police Academy graduation rites to take responsibility for Read More …

From avian migration to Jay-Z: Inspiration translates on the Manila Fashion Festival runway

Truth be told, fashion shows faze me. The show, often on the sidelines than on the runway, can be a tiring spectacle of selfies and self-promotion from the chic to the carnivalesque. Yet somehow, Manila Fashion Festival adopts a friendlier, less rigid vibe, maybe because Anna Wintour herself is starting to lighten up (the poker face is still in style, but scowling is so last season), or maybe because we’ve all come to an unspoken agreement that we’re all there for one thing: the clothes. Manila Fashion Festival Fall/Winter 2015, which was organized by Art Personas, was held from Mar. 18 to 21 at the Green Sun building. Day One presented the designs of Happy Andrada, Jerome Salaya Ang, John Herrera, Jot Losa, Renan Pacson and YAY. Day Two was more for evening wear with Anthony Ramirez, Charina Sarte, Chris Diaz, Michael Leyva, Odelon Simpao and Veejay Floresca. Day Three designers delivered creative shows, with Cheetah Rivera, Mark Bumgarner, Pablo Cabahug, Art Personas in-house brand Arin, and Rhett Eala, who celebrated his 20th year in the business. The afternoon of Day Four was all about young designers Banggo Niu, Bea Samson, Esme Palaganas and Tony Evan. Jaz Cerezo, Mark Tamayo, Vania Romoff and Ziggy Savella closed MFF with the evening show. In stark contrast to fall/winter tradition, many of the collections were on the side of fun. An abundance of bows made an appearance. Floor-skimming dresses in prints of all kinds were popular. Themes in the spirit of the Man Read More …

Came in like a wrecking ball

Guitarist Tommy Tedesco and bass player Carol Kaye wait for the “go” signal in The Wrecking Crew. The Wrecking Crew were like pop ninjas, performing their mind-blowing moves in the studio then disappearing in a puff of smoke. We came in there wearing Levis, T-shirts, smoking cigarettes or whatever, and the old guys said, ‘They’re gonna wreck the business!” That’s Hal Blaine, session drummer extraordinaire, on how he and a handful of players became known as The Wrecking Crew — the most heard, if least famous, backing musicians in rock and pop history. Their story is finally told in a documentary of the same name — The Wrecking Crew was actually held up for release for several years as song rights were negotiated. This month, it gets a proper release, and it’s one of most illuminating documentaries on the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll. The story picks up with the surviving members in Los Angeles, where this loose affiliation of crack musicians was responsible for playing on just about every great pop hit you can name from the ‘60s: You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling by The Righteous Brothers. Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys. California Dreaming by the Mamas and the Papas. I Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher. Up, Up and Away by The Fifth Dimension. Windy by The Association. Everybody’s Talkin’ by Nilsson. MacArthur Park by Richard Harris. Even the theme from Hawaii Five-O. Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: If you needed Read More …

Beauty tricks for summer

Let it glow: Bronzer is great for warming up your skin tone, but application should be to specific areas only. DEAR RISSA, I admire how you always look so pulled together, even if you’re a mom. We’re planning our annual summer vacay. Usually, what happens during these outings is that I’m so into making sure that everything’s okay that I totally forget about my looks. How can I stay gorgeous during our summer vacays?                                      GRACE For low effort but high impact, go for a bright lipstick! A pop of pink or a gorgeous magenta is more fun and playful than the classic red or nude. A bright lippie can work wonders to instantly brighten the face. The switch from scarlet to fuchsia can also freshen the way you look and feel. Pair it up with big sunnies – not only do they protect your peepers from wrinkles, they instantly give off a celebrity/model off-duty vibe. Make it a must to wear a pair every time you go out. RISSA Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch:   How to get that sun-kissed look Hi, REGINA, How do I use bronzer? I really want to look more tan, but I haven’t been to the beach. Do I just dust it all over my face? MARIE If the look you’re going for is Jersey Shore — and I’m sure it isn’t — then replacing your pressed powder with bronzer is the answer. Kidding aside, though, bronzer is actually great for warming Read More …

China’s weak factory activity dampens PSEi

MANILA, Philippines – The country’s benchmark stock index fell yesterday behind a disappointing manufacturing data from the world’s second largest economy. The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) declined 0.15 percent or 11.55 points to close at 7,828.94 while the broader all shares index was slipped 0.24 percent or 10.96 points to 4,526.82. With no major market mover locally for the day, analysts said the local market searched for answers abroad and found a Chinese factory data which dropped to an 11-month low.   As a result, decliners pummeled advancers, 112 to 68, while 44 stocks were unchanged Turnover value, however, increased slightly to P9.8 billion. Asian markets were mixed, with the bigger Nikkei of Japan tumbling 0.2 percent. Wall Street indexes, meanwhile, were all in the red overnight. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “Volatile swings from Wall Street did not sit well with buyers,” said Jason Escartin, analyst at F Yap Securities Inc. “While the index hold within consolidation range between 7,700 to 7,862 level, we cannot discount a test of newer highs towards the 8,000 level from select PSE-index stocks. Meanwhile, a break below the range would imply a test of major support levels,” Unicapital Securities Inc. said in a report.

Is a Filipino Lee Kuan Yew desirable?

Both FVR and Deng Xiaoping were reported to have minimized the breathtaking accomplishments of Lee Kuan Yew by pointing out Singapore only has five million people. Yes, there are more complicated problems here and in China but they still sound like sour grapes to me. Lee Kuan Yew is about a leader with a vision, the determination and pragmatism to see the vision become reality against great odds. It is about leading by example, a selfless dedication to the good of one’s country with little or no thought of personal gain. It is about strategic thinking and how to move one’s country amidst stiff competition and changing times. An article in Foreign Policy calls LKY a political streetfighter more respected than loved. FP also describes Singapore’s economic miracle as perhaps the most miraculous. “In a small, speck of a country cast off from Malaysia in 1965, without natural resources or a common unifying culture, Lee accomplished more in a generation than anyone thought possible.” Some of our politicians say LKY was successful because he had dictatorial powers. True but Marcos had dictatorial powers too.  The big difference is that LKY was honest, had integrity. He used his powers to discipline his people into thinking of common good above self interest. Marcos used his powers to enrich himself and his cronies. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1  There was a time when I suggested, not just in jest, that we should hire LKY after his retirement to help Read More …
