Time out with Eddie Peng

Chinese singer-actor Eddie Peng lives up to the brand’s classy image as the newest ‘Longines Ambassador of Elegance,’ and his playful side during the Funfare interview Did your Longines help you wake up on time this morning? That was the first question I asked Chinese actor-singer Eddie Peng as soon as he sat down for this interview at the recent launch of the first Longines mono-brand boutique in the Philippines at the second floor of SM Megamall’s Building A. “Hahahaha,” laughed Eddie, “yes, it always does. It never fails.” An Aries (Western horoscope) and a Dog (Chinese zodiac), Eddie was born on March 24, 1982 in Taipei where he’s known as Peng Yu-yan. Eddie migrated to Vancouver at age 13 and studied at the University of British Columbia where he majored in Economics. His dream to be a businessman was nipped in the bud when he went back to Taipei because of his grandmother’s death. He got stuck in his birth place when he was discovered by director Yang Daqing who cast him in the TV series The White Paper of Love. Goodbye, business! Hello, acting! There was no stopping Eddie since then. Described as having “an open personality,” Eddie works not only in Taiwanese projects but also those in Korean. Filipino fans probably remember him for the Koreanovela Scent of Love, one of the more than two dozen TV shows he has done so far, plus about two dozen movies, numerous music videos, etc. As the newest “Longines Ambassador Read More …

Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura (left) and Wesley So. MILLIONAIRE CHESS PHOTO. LAS VEGAS, Nevada — After squaring off in the U.S. Chess Championships, grandmasters Wesley So and Hikaru Nakamura will face each other again in the rich Millionaire Chess Open in October at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. While the billing as the U.S. No.1 chess player will be up for grabs in the U.S. championships scheduled later this month in Saint Louis, Missouri, a cool $100,000 will go to the champion of Millionaire Chess Open. The 21-year-old So will defend his title in the Las Vegas tournament, which Nakamura skipped last year. With three weeks before the March 31 deadline to register, So and Nakamura headline a cast of 301 participants, including 30 grandmasters and two women grandmasters from around the globe. Registration is actually open just before the October 8-12 tournament, but the regular registration fee of $1,000 for the Open Section ends on March 31. “I firmly believe this year will be stronger than last year,” said Grandmaster Maurice Ashley, founder of Millionaire Chess with entrepreneur Amy Lee.  “With the inclusion of Nakamura, we have incredible star power and chess strength at the top.”. He said the tournament would not just be a Nakamura-So show. “There will be top players who smell the $100K and want a piece of the action too! Still, those two players will make the event incredibly tough,” Ashley said. Just like the inaugural event last year, the first seven rounds of every Read More …

Lotis Key — Feeding my Filipino

First posted in PositivelyFilipino.com  My husband has invited three Filipino coworkers and their wives to dinner. That means we will be eight people total. I have been prepping and cooking for two days. Butternut squash bisque. Grilled salmon. Baby bok choy. Sesame honey chicken wings. Roasted eggplant and tomatoes. Steamed rice. Chocolate cake. Mango bars. Tea and coffee. The guests will be here any minute now. Husband: Are you sure you made enough?Wife: Are you kidding? There’s more than enough!Husband: But you’re sure?Wife: Yes! I’m sure.Husband: Well as long as you’re sure.Wife: Look … why don’t you go get some ice or something?Husband: Okay. Last minute touches to the table. Last minute touches to the guest bathroom. Last minute touches to my face. Return to kitchen where husband is returned and there are two foil bags on the counter. My last minute busyness immediately screeches to a halt. Wife: What is that?Husband: Two roasted chickens.Wife: What? Why?Husband: You know … just in case…. Glaring at him, I move towards the bags, fully intending to slam both to the floor and smash them into flatness … but the doorbell rings. Okay. I accept that it’s my fault. When we were newly married, well over two decades ago, my husband asked if he could bring his teammates home after a big game. Even though I’d never entertained a pro-basketball team, and Manang Loisa (family cook and fall-back person for all things culinary) was on vacation, I have always been a woman of Read More …

2,400 Filipinos asked to leave Yemen as conflict worsens

MANILA, Philippines – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has joined other Department of Labor and Employment-attached agencies, as well as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), in appealing again to the nearly 2,400 Filipinos in Yemen to avail themselves of the government’s mandatory repatriation program following the continued deterioration of the political and security situation in the West African nation. In an advisory over the weekend, the OWWA said Philippine nationals should coordinate with the crisis management team (CMT) in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a. OWWA head Rebecca Calzado noted the agency was “part of the CMT, composed of officials from the DOLE and the DFA” and has been monitoring the situation in crisis-hit countries to ensure the safety of overseas Filipino workers. “If immediate action is needed, the CMT automatically activates its committees to respond to the situation,” she explained. In Sana’a, the CMT holds office at the Movenpick Hotel on Berlin Street. It can be reached through tel. +967.73.384.4958. Filipinos there may also contact the Philippine Consulate on Damascus Street in the Hadda Area through tel. no. +967.1.416.751. According to Calzados, 2,391 Filipinos work in Yemen as nurses, household service workers, engineers, technicians and mechanics. “The continued occupation of the capital city by Houthi rebels and the recent suspension of the operation of several embassies in Sana’a were the basis for the DFA’s heightened alert level for Filipinos in Yemen,” she said. The OWWA appealed to the relatives of OFWs in Yemen to “convince their loved ones Read More …

Treason charges filed vs Aquino

President Benigno S. Aquino III huddles with the ASEAN Law Association (ALA) Officials and Delegates, led by ALA president Indonesian Chief Justice Dr. Hatta Ali, for a snap shot during the courtesy call at the President’s Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Friday (February 27). A non-government organization, ALA brings together all the different branches of the law profession – judges, law teachers, law practitioners and government lawyers. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Malacañang is not concerned about the treason complaint filed by a former assemblyman against President Benigno Aquino III and several other officials over the government’s peace negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). In a text message on Thursday, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the accusations made by lawyer Homobono Adaza and Herman Tiu-Laurel did not have any solid basis. “Hindi natitinag ang determinasyon ng Pangulo na isulong ang prosesong pangkapayapaan sa kabila ng mga paratang na walang matibay na batayan,” Coloma said. On Wednesday, Adaza and Tiu-Laurel lodged a treason complaint against Aquino and members of the Philippine government’s peace panel with the Office of the Ombudsman. The complainants accused Aquino of allowing the MILF, which they described as a “terrorist organization,” to have a “territory, more powers and more new institutions” through the comprehensive peace deal signed by the group and the Philippine government last year. They cited Article 114 of the Revised Penal Code, which states that an individual is guilty of treason when he or she “levies war against the Philippines Read More …
