Amid strong opposition and criticisms, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Deles said Friday that the Bangsamoro Basic Law and the peace process will emerge stronger and with the bigger participation of the Filipino people. In her speech at a book launch to mark the first year since the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, Deles admitted that what happened after the Mamasapano clash has been difficult and has been psychologically and physically battering. “When you think why did this happen, why do we need to go through this again, with what we have seen over the last two months and especially in the last weeks, I’m getting more and more affirmed and confident that this has happened and the way that we responded to it is to make the process stronger,” she said. “Certainly, going through this crisis, facing this challenge, all of these will result to a stronger process, a stronger BBL with more people on board. Why do we say that? We say that because of all the statements that are coming out, from different sectors,” she added. After the Mamasapano clash, which resulted in the deaths of 44 Special Action Force commandos, 18 Moro Islamic Liberation Front members, and five civilians, criticisms and questions on the BBL snowballed. Some lawmakers even withdrew their support from the BBL, asked President Benigno Aquino III to replace the peace panel, and stop peace negotiations with the MILF. We will overcome, we will push ahead Despite this, Read More …

Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski (MNS photo) World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Climate Solutions Steward Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski leads this year’s Earth Hour campaign aimed at raising environmental awareness. Held annually, it encourages people to switch off their lights for more than an hour on March 28 from 7 to 10 p.m. In an interview, Mikee said it’s not only Mother Nature that’s been suffering from people’s irresponsibility. She underscored that we are, in fact, ultimately killing ourselves by not taking care of our surroundings. “We all agree naman na we are already feeling the bad effects of climate change. That is why when they approached me, I agreed (to do it). I want to be part of an event that would remind us that simple acts can contribute to (the rehabilitation of) our planet,” she said. Mikee urges everyone to make energy conservation part of their lifestyle. “Medyo malamig naman kapag gabi kaya baka pwedeng ’wag nang buksan ’yung aircon or saglit lang. Kasi ’yung mga ganoong bagay (ay) malaking tulong na,” she said. Educated at a very young age about environmental awareness, Mikee hopes the country would be named No.1 Earth Hour country anew. “For years palagi tayong nangunguna sa ganyan. Siyempre nakakatuwa na we are championing the Earth Hour. Very nice kasi alam mo naman tayong mga Pilipino gustong palaging number one sa mga ganitong bagay,” she said. In line with the campaign, WWF also launched “The Gift of Light” campaign that will give portable solar lamps to families in Palawan so Read More …

Amid the back and forth negotiations to smoothen out some issues, finally the two great boxing gladiators will meet at MGM Garden in Las Vegas on May 2nd for what is dubbed the “Fight of the Century”. The unique encounter is the most awaited encounter and has the distinction being the top prizefight event where both boxers will laugh their way to the bank after less than an hour of blood and sweat if the fight goes through the scheduled 12 rounds. Pacquiao will pocket $80 million while Mayweather will be $120 richer. The staggering amount to stage the fight will cost their fans a lot of money to witness in person or in pay-per view mode. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front welcomed Friday the decision of President Benigno Aquino to tap ‘civilian leaders’ to review the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law describing it as a step to the right direction. “As a matter of principle, we do appreciate that because it is an initiative to the right direction and I think that would boost the chance of the BBL passing in Congress,” Mohagher Iqbal, head of the MILF peace panel, told reporters before the launch of publications advocating peace in Mindanao. Asked if he thinks the BBL is the casualty of the Mamasapano clash, Iqbal replied in the negative. “I don’t call it as a casualty because the BBL is battered, but it is not yet down,” he said. He expressed hope that with the President and the MILF pushing the BBL forward “eventually the voice of reason will prevail over the voice of emotion.” Asked about the other options of the MILF if ever the BBL failed to get the nod of lawmakers, Iqbal said its only option now was to push the proposed law and have it passed by Congress. “The only option right now is the option of peace. The way of peace will prevail over the way of war and it’s basic in the MILF and in Islam that peace should always be the agenda and we will stick to that no matter what happens, the way of peace will stay until the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Mindanao,” the MILF leader said.
