The Fil-Am Chamber has many activities this year as such the entrepreneurship workshops, the upcoming Filipino American History Month in October and the Philippine American Independence Day on July 4 at the Stub Hub Center,” Tan said. CHED grants tuition hikes in 313 private colleges and universities

(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – A total of 313 private colleges and universities nationwide will implement an increase in tuition and other school fees this school year. A statement released by the Commission on Higher Education said the average increase across all regions is 6.48 percent. There were no approved increases in areas affected by Typhoon Yolanda. According to CHED, the tuition hike was warranted given the effects of inflation and the improvement of facilities in the schools. CHED added however that it has made available more than 100,000 financial assistance grants for deserving students. CHED has yet to release the list of schools with tuition fee hike. (MNS)

Kathryn, Nadine finally meet

Nadine Lustre and Kathryn Bernardo (MNS Photo) Teen stars Kathryn Bernardo and Nadine Lustre were finally introduced to each other formally recently. The two young stars met face to face during rehearsals for their respective numbers on “ASAP.” In a post on the official Instagram account of the variety show, Bernardo and Lustre can be seen posing side by side along with Julia Barretto. Another photo of them was again uploaded on “ASAP’s” account after their opening production number. In a past interview, Bernardo admitted there exists “some kind of awkwardness” between her and Lustre because a lot of people are constantly comparing them. “Siguro meron kaming awkwardness kasi with the social media, the Twitter, the Instagram, parang nauunahan ng lahat ng tao bago pa kami mag-meet,” Bernardo had said. Bernardo also once said she would like to get to know Lustre more, and maybe even hang out with her in the future. Since Lustre rose to fame in last year’s “Diary ng Panget,” not a few have commented that she and Bernardo look alike. Moreover, Bernardo’s team-up with Padilla is also being compared to the tandem of Lustre and James Reid. Despite this, Lustre had shrugged off comparisons, pointing out that she and Reid are just starting out and still have much to prove. Lustre’s latest film “Para sa Hopeless Romantic,” which also features Barretto, opens in theaters on Wednesday. (MNS)

Discharging a Deed of Trust in bankruptcy! A second or third mortgage can be stripped off the title of your home, and discharged as unsecured debt in a chapter 13 bankruptcy. Imagine, your house is worth less than you owe, and now you can strip part of what you owe and still keep the property. Yes, it’s true. Liens can be stripped off of the debtor’s assets in Chapter 13 when the property is upside down, and the fair market value does not cover secondary liens. Section 506 of the Bankruptcy Code acknowledges that a lien is only a secured claim to the extent there is value in the asset to which it attaches.  To the extent that the claim exceeds the value of the collateral, that portion of the claim is unsecured. This is really great news. We are stripping liens every day, and returning property value to our clients. Liens secured by vehicles: The most common application of lien stripping is the reduction of car loan liens to the present value of the car.  Thus a lender holding a $12,000 claim secured by a car now worth $10,000 has a secured claim of $10,000 and a unsecured claim for $2,000.  Two thousand dollars of the lien may be stripped off the asset (the car) in a reorganization.  The plan must provide for payment in full of the secured portion of the debt;  the unsecured portion can be paid little or nothing along with other unsecured claims. Nissan is going to extraordinary lengths to underline its new car’s performance credentials. Described by company chairman, Carlos Ghosn as the “four-door sportscar” when it was officially revealed at the New York Autoshow in April, Nissan has now decided to pit its new car against a BMW 3 series and an Audi A4 Quattro to prove that the slogan was more than simply marketing talk. In controlled tests at the Buttonwillow Raceway in southern California the 2016 Maxima SR set the fastest lap — 1:18.50 — around the 1.8-mile West Loop, beating the BMW 328i by almost a full (0.98) second. The car also outperformed the Acura TLX 3.5L V6 Tech by 2.08 seconds and the Audi A4 2.0T Quattro by 2.71 seconds. “We expected the all-new 2016 Maxima, with its re-engineered engine, transmission and chassis to do well, but frankly even we were surprised by the head-to-head test results against some very well-established luxury sports sedans,” said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America. September 11 museum draws 2.7 million visitors in first year

The visitors came from all 50 US states and 150 different countries to tour the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York, they said. In comparison, New York’s most visited museum, the Metropolitan Museum, welcomed 6.2 million people last year, and the Museum of Modern Art three million. About 4.2 million people visited the Statue of Liberty, a key tourist attraction in the city, during the same period. The September 11 museum, which first opened May 15, 2014 to only locals and the families of the victims, has since hosted President Barack Obama, former president George W. Bush, Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. To mark its first anniversary, the museum — built on the site where the World Trade Center towers once stood in southern Manhattan — opened an exhibit of photographs by Jonathan Hyman called “Beyond Ground Zero.” The show focuses on public tributes paid to the victims and on search and rescue efforts at Ground Zero immediately after the attacks on the Twin Towers. A total of 2,753 people died in the September 11 attacks on New York.
