Fast heart rate could point to diabetes risk

Researchers have identified a fast heart rate as a possible risk factor for diabetes.© haveseen/shutterstock.com (Relaxnews) – Researchers from the US and China have found an association between resting heart rate and diabetes that could help identify those with a higher future risk for the disease. In a study of 73,357 Chinese adults, they found that faster heart rates were associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes, as well as impaired fasting glucose levels. More precisely, according to study senior author Xiang Gao of Penn State University, “Each additional 10 beats per minute was associated with 23 percent increased risk of diabetes, similar to the effects of a 3 kilogram per meter square increase in body mass index.” They then combined their results with those of seven previous studies and found that those with a fast heart rate had a 59 percent increased risk of diabetes comaped to those with a slow heart rate. The results were published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. kc/cm

Mary Jane is innocent, claims alleged ‘recruiter’

Supporters rally outside the Indonesian Embassy in Makati City on Friday appealing for clemency for Filipino Mary Jane Veloso, convicted of drug trafficking in Indonesia. Veloso has been moved to an island prison and is awaiting final word on her execution from Indonesian authorities. (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Mary Jane Veloso is innocent. This is the claim of Veloso’s alleged illegal recruiter, Maria Kristina Sergio, in a 31-page counter-affidavit that will form part of her defense on human trafficking, illegal recruitment and estafa charges pending with the Department of Justice (DOJ). While Sergio denied being part of an international drug syndicate behind the 2.6 kilograms of heroin seized from Veloso by Indonesian authorities in 2010 that eventually led to the death sentence meted on Veloso for drug trafficking, she stressed that Veloso knew nothing about the contraband. LP stalwart: Mar Roxas won’t settle for vice presidential run in 2016

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas (center) receives the Board of Inquiry (BOI) report on the Mamasapano incident from Philippine National Police OIC Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina (right) and Director Benjamin Magalong, the BOI chairman, on Friday. The report was immediately made public. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – An administration ally on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II sliding down to a vice presidential candidate in the 2016 elections, saying it is only part of a plan to demolish his possible presidential bid. Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone said talk of Roxas settling for a vice presidential run was part of his opponents’  ploy to portray him as a “weak” presidential candidate. “His detractors want to convince the voters to shun a ‘non-winner,’” he said in a text message. Evardone, however, said questions about Roxas’ competence can easily be resolved by examining his track record as a public official. “[He is] an incorruptible leader,” he said. Talk about Roxas sliding down to run for vice president surfaced after the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that some Liberal Party stalwarts were pushing for a Poe-Roxas tandem in the 2016 elections. Another Inquirer report quoted Budget Secretary Florencio Abad as saying that the ruling party was open to a number of possibilities “considering the unpredictable nature of Philippine presidential politics.” The report indicated that the possibilities included a Poe-Roxas tandem. Roxas has long been touted as the LP’s presumptive presidential candidate even though he has yet to announce Read More …

Lacson inching closer to run for president

President Benigno S. Aquino III administers the oath of office to Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery former Senator Panfilo Lacson in a ceremony at the President’s Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Tuesday (December 10, 2013). The “rehabilitation czar” is the man in charge to oversee the overall efforts being undertaken by the national government in reconstructing the areas destroyed by super typhoon Yolanda in the Visayas region (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Former Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Wednesday said he will once again try his luck for the presidency next year if he gets a double-digit rating in the next survey. “Hindi ako magdi-declare nang wala akong pinaghuhugutan,” said Lacson, who got a 1 percent preference in the last presidential survey, at a forum in Manila. Lacson expects the next survey to come out in late June. He said he will decide accordingly before the start of the filing of candidacy in October. Lacson, a ranking police official before entering politics, first ran for president in 2004 but lost to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. At the forum, Lacson admitted that he was going around the country to promote his platform called “Equality in Budget Distribution,” where he promises a P12-million yearly development fund to all barangays once he is elected to Malacañang. Lacson also owned up to some TV and radio commercials, as well as posters to boost his exposure. He said his donors paid for them. Lacson said President Benigno Aquino III has asked him three times regarding Read More …

Helping ‘boat people’ moral duty: CBCP chief

Manila Archbishop Antonio Luis G. Tagle as announces the visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines on January 15-19 next year during a press conference July 29, 2014 in Intramuros, Manila. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President Soc Villegas lauded the Philippine government for its willingness to accept sick and hungry refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh. In a statement, the Lingayen-Dagupan archbishop said “there is a moral obligation to protect them from the harm they flee from. There is a legal obligation not to forcibly repatriate them. And by all precepts of morality and decency, there is an obligation not to leave them to the mercilessness of the elements on the high seas.” Villegas said while the Philippines has little resources to accommodate all the migrants, “there is always room for the weary and burdened to rest on our shores before they continue on their journey.” The refugees, composed mostly of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar and economic migrants from poverty-stricken Bangladesh, have set sail toward neighboring countries to seek a better life. The Rohingya minority is dubbed by the Untied Nations as one of the most persecuted in the world, denied citizenship by largely Buddhist Myanmar. Myanmar’s immediate neighbors in Southeast Asia – Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia – however have turned them away, leaving them adrift in the high seas, without food on board rickety boats. Some of them were abandoned by human smugglers who promised to bring them to the neighboring countries. Read More …

OCA-AAPI organizations support equal opportunity in higher education

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates joins the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC), and more than 120 other Asian American and Pacific Islander organizations in an open letter to support affirmative action and equal opportunity in higher education. “OCA stands strongly on the principle that diversity on college campuses across our country enriches the lives and education of our students”, said Michael W. Kwan, OCA National President. “Interactions with students from different backgrounds and struggles will prepare not only Asian Pacific American students, but all students, with enriching experiences that will help them succeed in their lives far beyond their college years.“ “We also recognize that despite the great success of some Asian American groups, a large number of APAs still experience admission rates and academic performance on par with or below African American and Latino Americans,” added Kwan. “When the data is disaggregated, it will clearly demonstrate the important need to continue affirmative action. Southeast Asians, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders still have some of the highest rates of poverty and lowest academic success among all racial groups.” OCA- Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs).

Iya admits acting not her forte

Iya Villania (MNS Photo) Iya Villania has no qualms about being known mainly as TV host and performer. While many of her contemporaries are eager to make a name as actresses, Iya has been busy co-hosting “ASAP” and “MYX” for many years. Her last acting project was the Kapamilya series “Apoy Sa Dagat,” which aired some two years ago. “I’ve been in the industry for 10 to 11 years na din and I’ve tried to do what I can. I’m aware of what I am better at and what I am not so great at. I like to be real and true to myself. So, if I feel that it’s not something that will do me good, huwag na lang.” She added, “There are many aspiring actresses there, since hindi ko din naman forte, I would rather let them have that opportunity and I’ll do something na lang na I’m better at.” Iya shared that acting requires a lot from her. “I had to make it real for me. Hindi ko kaya na i-acting lang,” she said. “It takes that much out of me.” And there’s the constant criticism. “Masakit talaga kapag ino-okray. It doesn’t come easy for me to cry. When I cry, totoong tears iyon. So kapag ino-okray ako, ‘Hindi mo alam kung anong hirap ginawa ko?’ May hugot. I really try not to take it personally,” she said. That is why she’d rather do more hosting and performing. “Because that’s where I am more comfortable with. I Read More …

Janice de Belen breaks silence on Gerald

Janice De Belen (MNS Photo) Janice de Belen finally broke her silence amid persistent speculations that she is the real reason Gerald Anderson and Maja Salvador broke up. De Belen said she did not feel the need to speak up about the matter because “everybody already believed it.” “Kasi feeling ko wala ng point kasi naniwala na lahat eh. Ano pang point para klaruhin ko ‘yung issue or para i-deny ko or whatever when everybody already believed it? Kaya sabi ko huwag na. Kasi kapag persistent na masyado, Instagram na lang. Ganun na lang kasimple. Isip ka na lang ng pinakamadali – parang your point will get through so ‘yun na lang,” she said. Both Anderson and Salvador have already denied that de Belen is involved in their breakup. Just like the former couple, de Belen said she is also clueless as to how the rumor started, especially because she was in Korea when it first surfaced. “Magandang tanong [kung bakit ako ang natsitsismis], kasi kahit ako hindi ko alam. Bakit ako? Wala bang ibang mas sexy or mas maganda? Bakit ako? I feel na lahat sila, parang ‘yun din ang tanong, ‘Bakit siya?’” she said. But having been in show business for a very long time, de Belen said she is no longer bothered by reports which she knows are not true. “Ilang taon ko na ba ginagawa ang pag-aartista? So para sa akin, sanay na ako na natsi-tsismis. Of course ang worry ko lang was my children. Tinanong Read More …

Is Dennis Trillo back with Jennylyn Mercado?

Dennis Trillo and Jennylyn Mercado (MNS Photo) Actor Dennis Trillo has finally broken his silence on rumors that he and his former girlfriend, actress Jennylyn Mercado, have rekindled their romance. During the grand press conference of his upcoming movie “You’re Still the One”, Trillo clarified that he and Mercado are not yet back together contrary to what’s being reported. “Wala pa sa ganoong – ang totoo po niyan, ang nangyayari parang binubuo pa lang namin ‘yung mga nasirang pagkakaibigan,” he said. However, the actor is not closing his doors on the possibility that he may fall in love again with someone whom he had a relationship with in the past. “Depende siguro sa pinagsamahan niyo at sa pinagdaanan niyo sa nakaraang relasyon. Pero hindi mo pa rin talaga masasabi. Depende sa relasyon,” Trillo said. “Yung ganun kasi, posible naman siyang mangyari talaga, pero hindi po siya nangyayari sa lahat ng relasyon. Meron siguro sa ilan, pero hindi sa lahat naa-apply,” he explained. Asked if he believes that love is sweeter the second time around, the actor said: “Puwede naman, naniniwala din.” But Trillo reiterated that it still depends on what the couple went through in their past relationship.
