(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III on Monday revealed that Interior Secretary Mar Roxas is “on top of the list” of his choices for his preferred presidential bets for the 2016 polls. In an interview with reporters after inspecting classrooms in Marikina, Aquino described Roxas as a “valuable” Cabinet official and a leader of the ruling Liberal Party. The President also pointed out that Roxas showed his “ability to sacrifice” when he gave way to Aquino’s presidential candidacy in 2010. “He [Roxas] has demonstrated quite a wide range of expertise in so many different assignments,” Aquino said. “All of these traits should point out that he is, to my mind, as far as our coalition is concerned, he is at the top of the list,.” LP leaders have consistently identified Roxas as their standard-bearer for the 2016 polls, despite him lagging behind pre-election presidential popularity polls. Vice President Jejomar Binay, the opposition’s presumptive standard-bearer, and Senator Grace Poe remain as top choices in these surveys. Aquino recently met with Poe to discuss a possible alliance for the 2016 polls. The President said he is open to the possibility of Poe running in tandem with Roxas. The President declined to answer when asked to choose if he is more inclined to support a Read More …

Napoles employee ordered arrested

Janet Lim Napoles (center), the alleged pork barrel scam queen, is escorted out of the court room after being found guilty on her kidnapping and serious illegal detention case of scam whistleblower Benhur Luy at the Makati Regional Trial Court on Tuesday. Napoles was sentenced to permanent imprisonment. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) -– The Sandiganbayan has ordered the arrest of a former employee of alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles. The Sandiganbayan’s First Division, which handles the plunder and graft cases of Senator Ramon Revilla Jr., ordered the arrest of Laarni Uy due to her failure to attend her arraignment. Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Efren Dela Cruz also ordered the cancelation of Uy’s bail. Uy was supposed to undergo arraignment last April 8, but this did not push through because of her absence. She also did not send any lawyer. The pork barrel scam involves the allocation of lawmakers’ priority development assistance funds to bogus non-government organizations set up by Mrs. Napoles. Whistle-blowers earlier said congressmen and senators could get as much as 50% in kickbacks for all pork barrel funds allocated to Napoles NGOs. Napoles and the concerned lawmakers have denied the allegations. (MNS)

The countdown to cleaner cars has begun

100-day countdown to launch of cleanest-ever Euro-6 vehicles©SMMT (Relaxnews) – The toughest ever standards for vehicle exhaust emissions are just 100 days away from coming into force Europe-wide. From September 1, all new petrol and diesel-powered cars sold within the European Union will have to produce significantly less carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and a host of other air pollutants if they’re to be deemed Euro-6 compliant. The legislation has given carmakers a headache in that they have had to plumb the depths of their imagination and technical capabilities in order to improve their diesel engines to meet the targets. However, their challenge is everyone else’s good fortune. As the cleanest vehicles in history start rolling out onto European roads, air quality is set to improve measurably. Data published by the EU in April shows that the pollution emitted by the average new car has fallen by almost one third since it started imposing emissions restrictions with Euro-1 in 1993, but a jump is expected with the move to Euro-6 regulations as they specifically target diesel cars and their generation of nitrogen oxide (NOx), a gas linked to health issues as well as climate change. From September, a new car’s diesel engine cannot emit more than 80 mg/km of NOx and 5mg/km of particulate matter (PM), a huge jump over the outgoing Euro-5 standard, introduced in 2011, which permitted NOx emissions from diesels of 180mg/km. Roughly half of all new cars currently on sale in Europe already comply with Euro-6 regulations Read More …
