Kring Kring to do a movie again set in ‘new’ Tacloban

CRISTINA Gonzales (MNS photo) CRISTINA Gonzales is making a movie comeback in “Yolanda,” a drama about three women affected by the killer typhoon that hit Tacloban on November 8, 2013. It’ll be directed by U.S.-based filmmaker Gregorio Vicuna. She revealed this to us when we visited Tacloban for their annual Sangyaw Festival in honor of the fiesta of the Sto. Niño de Tacloban. “I will play the mom of a teenage girl na semi-retarded,” she says. “She’ll go missing during the typhoon and I will search for her. The other two women are played by Kate Coseteng (a councilor in Valenzuela) and Gwen Pang (Philippine Red Cross secretary). We’ll start shooting next month but magwo-workshop muna kami. I’m excited but kinakabahan kasi matagal na kong hindi umarte. My last movie was in 1987 pa, ‘Bakit Iisa ang Pag-ibig’, with the late Mark Gil and director Danny Zialcita. Ang tagal na. I agreed to do it because it’s set and will be shot in Tacloban. And also it offers an intimate look at what the people experience because of Yolanda.” A year and a half after Yolanda, Tacloban is back on its feet. There are still tell tales of destruction in some ruined houses and buildings  that were not repaired, but as a whole, most of the edifices have been renovated and repainted. It was Tacloban’s town fiesta on June 30 and they decided to celebrate it this year, unlike last year when everything was so simple as the people are Read More …

My Guideposts to Success

Corazon P. Guidote Success doesn’t come easy. Ironically, the earlier I accepted that, the easier it became. And so, for every goal I make, I take with me a set of guideposts to help me succeed. Persevere. Maintain focus. Work hard. Pray. Be flexible. Integrity matters. Celebrate milestones. Learn something new each day. Be positive, no matter what. These guideposts helped me build my career. To start with, I am one of those who didn’t know where my career would take me. Initially, I wanted to be a doctor. But because of health reasons, I ended up being an accountant; I even became a Certified Public Accountant. Oddly, I never worked in an accounting firm. Instead, I ended up working in an economic research institution and my first task was to build an econometric model. You can bet that really sounded Greek to me. What seemed incongruent directions eventually led me to a fulfilling career and jobs that eventually made sense. Though challenging, they were and continue to be very rewarding. I have worked with a total of 9 institutions–my employers being a good mix of a research institution, foreign multinationals, the Philippine government and domestic corporates. Each time, I’ve had to earn the trust and confidence of my employer. Stepping into a new job always required me to first to rely on my skill set. That alone, however, doesn’t earn trust. What does are integrity, perseverance, hard work, the willingness to learn and adjust in a new environment. When Read More …
