PNP chief Marquez: Families of SAF 44 to continue receiving govt assistance

Members of women’s group Gabriela join religious and civil society organizations in forming a human chain along E. Rodriguez Avenue in Quezon City on Friday to commemorate the 40 days of the Mamasapano incident. The activity was one of several events calling for peace in Mindanao. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The families of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos killed in a clash with various armed groups in Mamasapano last January will continue receiving assistance from the government even after the change in the Philippine National Police’s leadership, PNP chief Director General Ricardo Marquez said Tuesday. Marquez said aid continues to pour in for the police commandos’ family members since he assumed office last week. “Ang alam ko marami na talagang napaabot sa mga naulila ng SAF 44. Marami pang tulong na parating kasi simula nang ako ay mag-assume as chief PNP, nakakatanggap pa ako ng mga text kung ano ung pamamaraan kung paano sila makakatulong sa pamilya ng SAF 44,” he said. Marquez was appointed by President Benigno Aquino III earlier this month as the permanent replacement for PNP officer-in-charge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina who retired on July 16. In accordance with Aquino’s orders, Marquez said the PNP will continue to provide not just financial assistance to the fallen SAF troopers’ families, but also other forms of aid for their children, who might need help with their studies or search for jobs. “[Kung] sakaling naghahanap sila (mga anak ng SAF 44) ng trabaho at iba pang Read More …

Probe on ‘White House’ controversy will continue – PNP chief Marquez

President Benigno S. Aquino III witnesses the change of command ceremony of Philippine National Police with former PNP Officer-in-Charge and Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina ceding to newly appointed Chief Police Director Ricardo Marquez the symbolic Transformation Torch during the PNP Change of Command Ceremony and Retirement Honors for P/DDG Leonardo Espina at the Multi-Purpose Center, Camp Crame in Quezon City on Thursday (July 16). (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ricardo Marquez on Tuesday assured the public that investigation on the alleged anomalies surrounding the so-called “White House” in Camp Crame will continue even if it has now become his official residence. Marquez said the Ombudsman has meted out administrative sanctions in connection with the donations gathered for the White House’s construction in 2013. At the time, the occupant of the two-story residence was then-PNP Chief Director General Alan Purisima. In late June, the Ombudsman ordered the dismissal of Purisima and 10 other police officials over another controversy – entering into an allegedly anomalous contract with service courier Werfast Documentary Agency (Werfast) in 2011. “Nagkaroon na ng administrative decision ang Ombudsman. ‘Yung mga pinaniniwalaang sangkot doon ay nabigyan na ng kaparusahan at ang alam ko ay parang administrative remedies ang ginagawa ngayon,” Marquez said. Asked if the investigation on the White House’s controversy will continue, Marquez replied in the affirmative. The White House landed in the headlines last year after reports surfaced that its construction cost reportedly reached around P20 million. PNP director Read More …

VP Binay spokesman: Trillanes’ bullying must be stopped

Vice President Jejomar Binay walks among his supporters at the Makati City hall on Monday. People gathered at the city hall grounds to show their support for the older Binay and his son, Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, who was earlier served another suspension by the Ombudsman. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — The spokesman of Vice President Jejomar Binay on Tuesday defended the filing of a P200-million libel suit against his political detractors, as it singled out Senator Antonio Trillanes IV for supposedly “bullying” Binay. “The complaint filed by the Vice President against certain parties including Senator Trillanes is a legitimate redress of grievance. This also shows that the rule of law is non-negotiable,” lawyer Rico Quicho, Binay’s spokesperson for political affairs, said in a statement. “It is about time that Senator Trillanes’ bullying and clear arrogance of power be reviewed and stopped by a court of competent jurisdiction after a fair and impartial administration of justice,” he added. In his complaint filed against Trillanes and 11 others before the Makati Regional Trial Court, Binay said the defendants colluded to malign his name and reputation to force him not to run in the 2016 presidential elections. Trillanes, one of the three senators leading the Senate investigation on the corruption allegations against Binay, said the complaint filed by the Vice President is an indication that the public official was now in panic mode. “Nagpapakita lang ito na nagpapanic na si VP Binay kaya sinusubukan na lang niyang takutin ang mga taong umuusig Read More …
