Basra seeking more investments from PHL

BASRA COURTESY CALL. Dr. Majid Al-Nasrawi, the Governor of Basra Province in southern Iraq, and Chargé d’Affaires Elmer G. Cato of the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad shake hands following the latter’s courtesy call on the Iraqi official. During the meeting, Governor Al-Nasrawi requested the assistance of the Philippine Embassy in inviting Philippine companies to invest in Basra, the main oil producing region of Iraq and host of the country’s only port. (Philippine Embassy Photo by Andrei Bauzon) Basra – After a Filipino company poured in $130 million to develop Iraq’s largest port, the governor of this oil-rich southern province wants the Philippines to seriously consider sending in more investments. “We want more investments from the Philippines,” Governor Majid Al-Nasrawi said during a recent courtesy call by Chargé d’Affaires Elmer Cato of the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad. “There are numerous investment opportunities here for Filipino companies.” During their meeting, Governor Al-Nasrawi assured Cato that Basra and the rest of southern Iraq remain safe for investors as the region is far from the conflict that continues to rage in the northern and western parts of Iraq. “Basra is safe,” he said. “There is nothing to worry about. There are no serious security issues here.” Al-Nasrawi was all praises for the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), a Manila-based global port operator, which is investing $130 million to expand the country’s main port in Umm Qasr. ICTSI’s Basra Gateway Terminal Project, which is considered to be the largest private investment in Iraqi ports, will be fully operational next Read More …

THE Chaplain of Filipino Ministry of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has asked Catholic faithfuls to pray for the members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) as they go through a very deep crisis in their organization. Fr. Albert H. Avenido, who also serves at the Filipino-dominated St. Philomena church in Carson City, urged Filipino Catholics to refrain from engaging in actions that would agitate or offend the sensibilities of the members of the INC, the largest and most powerful home-grown church in the Philippines. “Huwag nating paliyabin ang sitwasyon. Alalahanin natin na mga kapatid din natin sila,” Avenido said in a telephone interview. The priest recalled that when the Archdiocese of Los Angeles was also rocked by scandals a couple of years ago, the INC as a church did not do anything to hurt the feelings of Catholics. “Ipinagdasal din nila tayo noong mayroong din tayong pinagdadaanan,” Avenido recalled. Weekend Balita pressed the priest for comment because of the social media bashing being done by netizens, some of them probably Catholics, against the members of the INC and their church. The Filipino priest said the mean comments on social media were unfortunate and do not reflect the nature of a true Christian. (Abner T. Galino)

By Abner Galino IGLESIA ni Cristo (INC) expatriates, particularly here in Los Angeles, have remained intact amid a developing crisis within the hierarchy of the biggest and most powerful home-grown church in the Philippines. A devout INC member, Erwin Arrieta, declared that the church would even become stronger after the crisis was over. “Ang turo hindi naman nag-iiba, yun pa rin. Kaya kahit ano man ang problema, hindi maaapektuhan ang simbahan lalo pang titibay. (The doctrine remains the same. The church will remain strong despite the crisis.),” Arrieta explained. Arrieta added that the incident in Manila even validates the fidelity of the INC church to its doctrine. “Pinapakita lang na walang sinisino ang simbahan. Pag lumabag ka sa patakaran, ititiwalag ka kahit na sino ka pa,” Arrieta pointed out. Arrieta is part of the INC southern California district which is composed of about 47 congregations distributed through the states of Nevada, Utah and Arizona. Another INC member who requested anonymity, agreed with the assessment of Arrieta. According to her, INC members are focused on the teachings of the church and not on the personalities or people that run it. She expressed sadness over the turn of events though. “Siyempre nalulungkot tayo para sa kanila, mga kapatid sila at ina ni Ka Eduardo,” she added. The source said that she welcomes a thorough probe on the corruption and abuse allegations made by Ka Angel Manalo, the brother of INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo, and other ranking ministers. According to her, the Read More …

Amid colleagues’ claims, Grace Poe still unsure about 2016 plans

Senator Grace Poe (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Senator Grace Poe remains uncertain whether or not she would seek the presidency in 2016. “Kasalukuyan ko pa ring sinusuri at tinitimbang ng buong katapatan ang aking puso at isipan patungkol sa hinaharap,” Poe said in a text message Tuesday. (I’m still weighing until now with all honesty my heart and mind about the future.) “Napakahalaga ng nakasalalay sa aking magiging disisyon. Bukod tangi dito ang nararapat na kahinatnan at marating ng ating bayang mahal sa susunod na anim na taon,” she said. (My decision will have very important implications. The most important of which are our beloved country’s outlook and path in the next six years.) Poe was reacting to the statements of Senators Sergio Osmeña III and Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, who have expressed certainty that the lady senator will join the presidential race next year. But Poe said those kinds of perceptions “do not really put added pressure on me.” “While I consult my family and close friends when necessary, I am and have always been independent in deciding on important matters,’ she said in another text message on Wednesday. “What puts pressure on me is the matter of whether what I finally decide on is the right one for our country,”   she added. While she has yet to make a decision, Poe has already topped the latest presidential survey conducted by the Pulse Asia, overtaking Vice President Jejomar Binay, the erstwhile consistent topnotcher in various surveys. She also Read More …
