It also serves as guarantee for risk insurance needs of farmers and other sectors. The government may utilize the fund to establish regional centers and information networks along with forecasting and early warning systems against climate-related hazards. The fund may also serve as support to institutional development such as preventive measures, planning, preparedness and management of impacts relating to climate change. Virgie Suarez, the legal counsel of the Laude family, said filing a new case against Pemberton before an international body could happen if he is acquitted by the local court hearing his murder case. ”Of course, we are also thinking about that. I cannot discuss it yet here but yes, there is still a way how to run after Pemberton. That would mean an international case, complaint,” Suarez said. Suarez said the Olongapo Regional Trial Court branch hearing the Laude murder case has until December 14 year to meet the one-year prescriptive period set forth in the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). ”We will be informed if the court will be able to resolve it earlier than December 14. As of now, there is no indication yet,” she said. Suarez said the prosecution can no longer appeal should the court acquit Pemberton. ”If he is considered not guilty, he Read More …

Floods ease but ‘Lando’ death toll hits 47

A young girl pours out a bucket of thick mud on Tuesday as she helps clean her home which was inundated by floodwaters brought by Typhoon Lando in Cabanatuan City. The government estimates the damage caused by the super typhoon has surpassed P5 billion, with full report yet to be completed. (MNS photo) MANILA, Oct 21 (Mabuhay) — Widespread flooding in the Philippines caused by a powerful typhoon eased on Wednesday but the storm’s death toll climbed to 47 and tens of thousands of people remained in evacuation centers. As the weather improved three days after the onslaught of Typhoon Lando (Koppu), officials were also counting the cost of ruined crops and drowned livestock from heavy rain that flowed into the vast farming regions north of Manila. “Although the water is still flowing downstream, it has started to subside in some areas,” Mahar Lagmay, director of a government project to mitigate the impact of natural disasters in the Philippines, said. Heavy rains across the mountainous northern Philippines, the cause of most of the flooding in the farming plains, had also eased, according to Lagmay and a local civil defense official. But 17 people had died across the central farming regions of Luzon, based on confirmed figures from national and local authorities. More than 300 villages had been submerged across the central farming regions of Luzon on Monday and Tuesday, with the flooding consuming entire homes in some areas. But the flooding had not subsided completely yet, forcing more than 107,000 Read More …

The LP tandem Mar and Leni later filed their Certificate of Candidacy (COC) as standard bearers of the Liberal Party for the 2016 national elections. (MNS photo) MANILA, Oct 21 (Mabuhay) – Liberal Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas has asked the Commission on Elections to disqualify and declare a nuisance a namesake who also filed a certificate of candidacy for president. The former interior secretary, whose full name is Manuel Araneta Roxas II, alleged that Manuel Antonio Roxas, if allowed to run, would “confuse voters (who) may unintentionally vote for respondent Manuel Antonio Roxas.” “Respondent Manuel Antonio Roxas clearly filed his COC for President to create confusion among the voters through the similarity between his name and that of petitioner Manuel Araneta Roxas,” the LP stalwart said in his petition before the Comelec. Manuel Antonio Roxas, 67, filed his COC on October 16, 2015 and wrote “Mar Roxas” as his nickname. The more prominent Roxas said he had always been known as “Mar” and had used this moniker in several elections. He expressed fear that if Manuel Antonio Roxas’ COC is not canceled, the latter’s name would appear next to his in the ballot. Roxas also alleged that his namesake did not have the means to wage a national Read More …

Open Letter to All the Housewives

Chinkee Tan Are you a housewife or a stay-at-home mom? Are you bored from staying at home the whole day? Has your self-esteem decreased because you are “just” a housewife? There are many reasons why you became a stay at home mom. Some of them might be… You have never worked outside the home. As soon as you graduated, you got married and became a housewife. Thus, you may feel that your years of education are wasted. You have experienced working but your husband asked you to stop since his income is enough to sustain the family. Thus, you may feel that the additional income you could bring in could have helped a lot more. Your may have a child who has special needs, so you need to be present and hands on. Thus, you may feel that you had no choice but to stay home and care for the needs your child. Some may have overlooked the value of being a housewife. But let me tell you the truth, being a housewife is no laughing matter. It is not just a simple domestic responsibility, but a major responsibility. Never entertain the idea that you have no value just because you stay home all day, that you don’t have worth, or that you don’t have anything to contribute. Never ever declare that you are “just” a housewife or “just” a stay-at-home mom. To all the housewives, let me tell who you really are…. YOU ARE A HERO One major qualifier Read More …
