Setting aside my personal opinion on issues of public governance, I somehow feel grateful whenever our government exerts effort to show concern and filial care for our senior citizens. One concrete example is the enactment of Republic Act No. 9994, otherwise known as the “Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010.”

Inquirer Visayas By: Connie E. Fernandez, October 22nd, 2015 12:08 AM SHOOTING IN LIGHTHOUSE Police scene of crime investigators enter Lighthouse Restaurant on Gen. Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City following the shooting of two Chinese diplomats allegedly by a fellow Chinese consular officer over lunch Wednesday. CHRISTIAN MANINGO / CEBU DAILY NEWS CEBU CITY—A birthday luncheon for a staff member of the Chinese consulate in a restaurant here turned tragic on Wednesday when the husband of a consular officer allegedly shot and killed two of her fellow officers. The motive, however, remained unknown as the suspects—Li Qing Ling, 60, and his wife, Consul Gou Jing—were still in police custody undergoing questioning. Chief Supt. Prudencio Tom Bañas, police director for Central Visayas, told the Inquirer that investigators had difficulty getting the statement because they had to look for an interpreter. The fatalities were identified as Chinese Deputy Consul Sun Shan and finance officer Hui Li. They died while receiving treatment in two different hospitals, said the city’s police director. Chinese Consul General Song Rong Hua was wounded but was in stable condition in a hospital here, Bañas said. Councilor Dave Tumulak, head of Cebu City’s Command Center, said Sun suffered a gunshot wound in the neck and Hui in the head. Bañas said Song made a reservation for a function room at Lighthouse Restaurant on General Maxilom Avenue here to celebrate the birthday of a staff member. At least nine Chinese nationals attended the luncheon, including Li and Gou, Bañas said. Read More …

INQUIRER.net U.S. Bureau October 21st, 2015 08:36 PM Justin Trudeau’s victorious Liberal party in Canada has pledged to lay down “more inclusive” immigration policies. CBC PHOTO SAN FRANCISCO—Canada dealt a big blow to incumbent conservatives by voting in its first new leader in nearly a decade in a general election that gave Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party an absolute majority. This is good news for immigrants. The Liberal Party has promised to make family reunification easier for new immigrants by doubling the number of parents and grandparents of immigrants admitted under the Canadian parents and grandparents program (PGP) that are granted permanent residency each year to 10,000, according to a report by Immigration.Canada. The number of immigrant parents and grandparents allowed into Canada under the PGP program is limited to 5,000 per year, imposed by the Harper government, which claimed that older immigrants place a burden on Canada’s health-care system. But Liberal leader Trudeau says that reuniting families was an important help to middle class families, with older relatives often assisting young parents by helping out with tasks such as child care, allowing them to go to work and save money on child day care costs. Liberals have also promised to double the budget for processing applications under the parents and grandparents (PGP) program, which will significantly reduce the current multiyear wait times for immigration applicants. The Liberals also promise to grant the spouses of immigrant’s permanent resident status as soon as they arrive in Canada. Currently, spouses receive conditional visas Read More …

With every online or in-store purchase of exclusive purple accessories, like a headset, phone or tablet case, HopeLine® from Verizon will donate $1, up to $100,000 to the national hotline.
