No commitment yet from Honasan to be VP Binay’s running mate –Tiangco

Senator Gringo Honasan pays his final respect to Senator Flavier. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Senator Gringo Honasan has yet to agree to United Nationalist Alliance’s (UNA) offer for him to be Vice President Jejomar Binay’s running mate in the 2016 elections, party president and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said Friday. “He has not come back to me yet. I cannot speak for Senator Greg and I don’t want to speculate,” Tiangco said. The UNA official said this in response to a question whether their party has received confirmation from Honasan to be Binay’s vice presidential candidate. During the launching of UNA in vote-rich Cebu, Binay announced his tandem with Honasan. “Lalong lumalakas, lalong tumatapang, UNA na, Bingo pa,” he said, using the monicker for their tandem, a play of “Binay” and “Gringo.” A tarpaulin was also placed in the stage indicating Honasan’s vice-presidential run, but the senator was a no-show at the event. Tiangco said the party wasn’t expecting Honasan’s attendance in the UNA event anyway. “In the first place, he never committed to show up in Cebu, so I don’t know why they were expecting him there,” he said. Malacañang, for its part, reserved its comment on the “Bingo” tandem until the official announcement of Binay’s running mate. So far, Binay will be in a four-way presidential race against administration standard bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, independent candidate Senator Grace Poe, and party-list Rep. Roy Señeres. Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago are also said Read More …

In the past dozen years that the SGV Foundation has been running the Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines program, it has acknowledged nearly 200 individuals who have contributed positively to the country’s economy and, in effect, to nation-building. When the program was launched in 2003, a basic question we had to grapple with was: what is an entrepreneur? It may sound simple and require an equally simple answer but, in our experience, that is not necessarily the case. What we have learned is that entrepreneurship is very dynamic and diverse; and that an entrepreneur cannot be stereotyped.

The cruel business of sports

MANILA, Philippines – I have never tried to disguise my bias towards hiring my business-qualified applicants who are former athletes. This is driven by an underlying belief in the power of sports as integral teaching tool: teamwork, discipline, will to win, and many other important intangibles for success are best developed on the fields of competitive sports. But the most valuable lesson of them all is a maturing effect that comes with learning that life is not always fair. That in life, and in business, there are harsh realities that can be quite cruel. Athletes know this inherently, because the cruelest world of all is the world of sports. Those of us in business are downright lucky. Let’s take a look at the life of a national athlete in the Philippines. To be clear, this is not in any way an indictment on how our national athletes are treated — this is the life of any professional athlete in most countries. The top of the food chain of our national athletes is being nominated as a “priority athlete.” This usually means winning a medal at the SEA Games, which are held every two years. A gold medalist will earn an allowance of P40,000 a month. A silver medalist gets P30,000 a month. And a bronze medalist gets P25,000 a month. If you come in fourth or fifth place, your allowance for being a non-medalist on the national team is a mere P9,600 a month. Now, you may think this is Read More …
