IVAN ANGELO L. DE LARA BANGKOK, Thailand—It was last year when 21-year-old Arizza Nocum learned about the One Young World summit, the largest forum of and by the youth in the world. Learning that being a delegate to the event would cost her an arm and a leg, she applied for a scholarship to attend it, and was luckily chosen by a foundation which would support her trip. On Saturday, she was not just a delegate, but a speaker in front of more than a thousand eager young people from all over the world, talking about peace and security, a cause which she has advanced for years as a young woman who has learned and witnessed terrorism. Library for peace Raised by a Muslim mother and a Christian father, Arizza said her parents have taught her that both religions could co-exist. And so, she has started a library open to young Muslims and Christians in order to bridge the gap between the two faiths and promote education. “My family started building libraries to provide a venue not only for young people of different religions and backgrounds to come together but also to provide access to educational materials that are sparse in these areas,” Nocum said during her speech. INQUIRER.net By: Julliane Love de Jesus, November 21st, 2015 07:25 PM President Benigno Aquino III listens during the 27th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Nov. 21. AP KUALA LUMPUR—President Benigno Aquino III may have avoided the issue on the South China Sea dispute during the recently concluded Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation but he surely is making up for it in his meeting with Southeast Asian leaders. As if one time is not enough, President Aquino underscored several times the competing claims between the Philippines and China in the resource-rich South China Sea on the first day of the 27th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in the Malaysian capital. During plenary sessions on Saturday, which were attended by Asean countries as well as China, Japan and South Korea, Aquino highlighted anew the need for peaceful settlement of disputes “in the sea known by many names.” He also reiterated that the UN Convention on the Laws of the Sea (Unclos) must be honored by all countries. Aquino stressed this in an earlier Asean plenary session and meeting with China, which was represented by People’s Republic of China Premier Li Keqiang. “Excellencies, our long-term goal of building an East Asian Community will only be truly realized when cooperation is matched by a steadfast commitment to maintain peace, stability, and security in the region. On this note, the Philippines reiterates the primacy of the rule of law,” said Aquino at the Asean Plus 3 meeting at the Kuala Read More …
INQUIRER.net By: Julliane Love de Jesus, November 21st, 2015 05:04 PM President Benigno Aquino III speaks at a closing press conference for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit at the International Media Center in Manila on Nov. 19. AFP KUALA LUMPUR—Amid the growing tension over the South China Sea, the Philippines has a message to China: Promote peace and set an example to other countries. With China being one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the more it has to take the lead in promoting peace and harmony among its neighbor countries, according to the Philippines. President Benigno Aquino III said this before a number of leaders at the 18th summit of the Association of South East Asian Nations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he had an opportunity to raise China’s incursion and bold reclamation activities in the disputed sea. “Excellencies, Your Majesty, China’s economy is larger than that of the entire Asean; its population is larger than that of all Asean nations combined. Any uncertainty in the region affects more of their people. Is it not therefore reasonable to expect China to take the lead in pushing for mechanisms that ensure stability, so that a peaceful rise may truly be achieved, not only by China, but for the entire region?” Aquino said in his intervention. “Likewise, all of our cultures tell us of the value of respecting elders; China claims to be among the oldest civilizations. We therefore hope that it sets an example for the rest of Read More …

President Benigno S. Aquino III exchanges views with Commonwealth of Australia Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull during the expanded bilateral meeting at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel on Wednesday (November 18, 2015), at the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Leaders of the 21 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation condemned all acts of terrorism and urged for closer global cooperation in the fight against extremist violence. The latest draft communiqué to be issued by APEC heads of state at the close of a two-day summit on Thursday did not refer to the territorial dispute among Asian nations in the South China Sea, but included the string of attacks on Paris, Beirut and on the Russian aircraft over Sinai. Highlighting their concerns over the impact of terrorism on their economies, the APEC leaders called for unity amid the global scourge, which they said needs “urgent” and “increased” international cooperation. “We strongly condemn all acts, methods, and practices of terrorism in all their forms and manifestations. We will not allow terrorism to threaten the fundamental values that underpin our free and open economies,” according to the latest draft. The statement veers from the typical APEC declarations focusing on trade and investments.
