Cardinal Tagle: Corrupt politicos unacceptable

By: Lito B. Zulueta, January 29th, 2016 03:52 AM THUMBS UP Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle speaks before 15,000 delegates on the fourth day of the International Eucharistic Congress in Cebu City. MARIANNE BERMUDEZ CEBU CITY, Philippines—Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle criticized corrupt politicians, saying they were part of the “throwaway culture” condemned by Pope Francis. Speaking on the fifth day of the 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) being held here, Tagle said materialism and individualism had skewed moral and social values, and there was a need to foster the “culture of giving and sharing.” “Politicians, will you throw away people’s taxes for your parties and shopping or guard them as gifts for social services?” the prelate said. While urging dialogue with “traditional and emerging cultures,” Tagle warned against dealing with people whose values were contrary to Christianity. “We should avoid cultures with widespread acceptance but are incompatible with Christian values,” he said. Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas admitted that members of the clergy might have committed moral lapses like politicians. Villegas, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, asked for forgiveness for the Catholic clergy whose questionable acts might have alienated them from the faithful.   ‘Forgive us’ “Our parishioners, forgive us, your lost shepherds, and beg God to show us His mercy,” Villegas told 15,000 IEC delegates from 71 countries during the penitential service, a ritual that prepares Catholics before confession, at the IEC Pavilion. “May the shepherd and the flock be merciful with each other,” Read More …

Filipino in Virginia wins $1M in national Powerball lottery

Asian Journal / INQUIRER.net News Partner By: Allyson Escobar, January 28th, 2016 09:00 PM Irene and Teofilo Mesina of Virginia Beach, Virginia, claiming their $1 million prize. POWERBALL PHOTO LOS ANGELES–While most people were closely watching the national Powerball lottery drawing live on television on Wednesday,  January 13, an 82-year-old Filipino man from Virginia Beach, Virginia was not one of them. It wasn’t until he checked online that he realized he had a winning ticket. Teofilo Mesina won $1 million – before taxes – from the record $1.5 billion jackpot, after correctly picking five numbers. He missed only the Powerball number. “Not many people win that kind of money,” Mesina told The Virginian-Pilot on January 19, as he claimed his prize. Mesina bought his ticket from a 7-Eleven at Lynnhaven Parkway and Salem Road in Virginia Beach. “I would buy just sometimes,” he said. “I played a mix of my own numbers, and some computer-picked numbers.” His numbers – 04, 08, 19, 27 and 34 – were selected from significant dates for loved ones, he said. (A friend was born in April, the fourth month of the year, so he chose number 4.) When Mesina looked at the numbers, he first thought he was misreading. He checked with his wife, Irene, then other family members to make sure he had won. “I was shocked; I couldn’t believe it,” Irene Mesina said. Including Messina, 72 ticket holders were $1 million winners — 12 of them from California. There were eight $2 Read More …

President Benigno S. Aquino III confers the Medal of Valor to PO2 Romeo Cempron, one of the slain SAF soldier in the Mamasapano Massacre, received by his wife Cristin Cempron at Camp Crame Monday (January 25). (MNS photo) MANILA, Jan 26 (Mabuhay) – Senator Grace Poe and Senate President Franklin Drilon are taking opposite sides on the issue of listening to an audio recording of an alleged attempt to cover up the events of the Mamasapano encounter. Poe said she is open to playing the audio clip when the Senate reopens its investigation on the bloody clash that saw 44 police commandos killed in an anti-terror operation. “Welcome sa atin iyan e kapag may magtutunton ng kung ano mang nais nating malaman na katotohanan,” said Poe, chairperson of the Senate committee on public order. On the other hand, Drilon said any evidence obtained through wiretapping is inadmissible in court hearings and legislative inquiries. “We are the lawmakers, we should not be the lawbreakers. Iyan po ay nasa Anti-Wiretapping Act, maliwanag po na hindi pwedeng tanggaping ebidensya ang unauthorized recording lalo na sa legislative investigation,” he said in a separate DZMM interview. A retired police officer and senatorial aspirant, Diosdado Valeroso, earlier said he has a digital audio recording of a conversation between a high-ranking government official and a legislator that occurred a day or two after the clash that left 44 Special Action Force (SAF) troopers dead. In the conversation, one of the parties was telling the other not to Read More …

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Shakespeare’s meaning in that line from Romeo and Juliet is that what matters is what something is, and not what it is called. It came to mind with the recently issued Securities and Exchange Commission-Office of the General Counsel (SEC-OGC) opinion dated 3 November 2015, which clarified whether a 100% foreign-owned domestic corporation can engage in the business of ground handling services for aircraft. The marshalling of an aircraft, loading and unloading of passengers, refueling and baggage handling are examples of such services.
