BEIJING — China’s first case of the Zika virus has been found in a 34-year-old man who recently traveled to Venezuela and is now making a speedy recovery, the government said Wednesday. The man from the southern city of Ganzhou had been treated in Venezuela on Jan. 28 before returning home on Feb. 5 via Hong Kong and the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said in a statement. The commission said he had been confirmed as having the Zika virus on Tuesday and was being treated at the Ganxian People’s Hospital. His temperature is now normal and a skin rash is receding, it said. The commission said the chances of the virus spreading in China were “extremely low” due to cold winter temperatures and a lack of mosquito activity, the primary avenue by which Zika is transmitted. The Zika virus is spreading rapidly through Latin America. Most people who contract it have either mild or no symptoms, but it is suspected of causing a birth defect in which babies are born with abnormally small heads. Bernhard Schwartlander, the World Health Organization representative in Beijing, said imported cases of Zika in China are to be expected given the frequency of travel between the country and South America. Ellen Adarna and Ejay Falcon (MNS photo) It seems that Ellen Adarna is open to giving Ejay Falcon a second chance, months after putting her “Pasion de Amor” co-star in the friend zone. In a press conference, Adarna was asked why her friendship with Falcon did not blossom into a romantic relationship. But instead of answering the question, the actress said: “Wala pa, wait lang. It’s not the end yet.” “May one month pa kami,” she added in jest. Their show is now down to its last four weeks. In the press conference, Adarna finally confirmed that Falcon indeed courted her, contrary to initial reports that they just went out together. “Yes,” she said, drawing loud cheers from members of the press. Falcon agreed as he shared why he thought the courtship did not work out. “Kasi noong mga panahon na ‘yon siguro mas pinili na lang naming mag-focus muna kami sa trabaho,” he said. When asked if she will entertain Falcon as a suitor again, Adarna said: “Open, pero not now. Hindi nga ako nagdi-date. I’m not really sure what I want.” It was August last year when Falcon admitted that he is going out with Adarna. The two also went to the 2015 Star Magic Ball together, but not without controversy. By October, Falcon said he has accepted the fact that he and Adarna are just friends.(MNS)

Antonio Trillanes IV to quash the libel case filed against him by dismissed Makati Mayor Junjun Binay. Branch 142 of the Makati RTC also refused Trillanes’ petition to recall the warrant of arrest issued against the senator. Judge Dina Pestaño Teves said Trillanes has a pending petition for review at the Department of Justice. Teves added Trillanes cannot be arrested as long as he posts bail as soon as he arrives in the Philippines from the US. Trillanes’ legal counsel gave the assurance that the senator will surrender and will post the P10,000 bail for the libel case. The case stemmed from a comment reportedly given by Trillanes that the young Binay bribed justices of the Court of Appeals to get a temporary restraining order on the six-month preventive suspension order issued by the Ombudsman in 2015. The arrest warrant was issued on Feb. 1 by the court after it found probable cause on the case filed against the senator. His lawyer on Monday said Trillanes is on an official trip abroad attending an international forum but will submit himself to court and face the libel raps. (MNS)

ROSEMEAD, Calif — Records might be made to be broken, but Southern California Edison just experienced one that it never wants to come close to again. SCE saw an all-time high 924 power outages caused by free-floating metallic balloons last year, far surpassing its previous high of 714 in 2012. With Valentine’s Day near, SCE strongly urges its customers to make sure their balloons are always tied to a weight — as required by California law — and to never release them outdoors because of the thousands of customers left without power when the metallic balloons float into power lines and other electrical equipment. Serious injuries and property damage can occur when the balloon contact is severe enough to bring down power lines — which happened 96 times last year for SCE. Anyone who sees a downed line or dangling wire — even if it appears not to be live — should not touch or approach it or anything in contact with it and call 911 immediately. “Metallic balloons look harmless, but there’s no way to overstate how dangerous they can be when released outside,” said Paul Jeske, SCE’s director of Corporate Health and Safety. “Merchants should always ensure that balloons are property weighted and remind their customers to never release them outdoors.” To illustrate the spike in balloon outages that typically begins in February and peaks in June, they rose 82 percent last year from January (33) to February (60), peaking with an all-time monthly high of 152 in Read More …

At least 50 houses made of light materials were destroyed by the fire, affecting 150 families according to a Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) official.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) − The 13 Filipino women workers who died in a hotel fire in Iraq have all been identified, the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad said Monday, as it clarified earlier reports that 14 Filipinas died in the incident. “Kahapon, natapos namin yung pag-identify ng mga remains nung ating mga sinawing palad ng mga kababayan. Right now, we’re in the process of notifying their next of kin,” charge d’affaires Elmer Cato said. The Filipinas were among the 21 killed in a fire that struck the Capitol Hotel in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan autonomous region on Saturday. Cato said the regional government of Kurdistan mistakenly identified one of the fatalities as a Filipina. “Nung dumating kami nung Saturday at binilang namin yung mga remains na nandoon, 13 lang and in-explain nila sa amin na yung isang biktima ay akala nilang Pilipino ay hindi pala…Tinanggal na nila sa listahan kaya naging 13,” he said. The envoy said they hope to fly the remains to the Philippines as soon as possible. “Sa normal process, it would take dalawang linggo bago maiuwi pero sa palagay namin, dahil sa assurance ng regional government ay mapapaaga natin yung pag-repatriate ng remains,” he said. MEMBERS of foreign business chambers in the Philippines gathered yesterday to enumerate the country’s gains on the fifth year of their annual forum while highlighting the issues that still need to be addressed, which ranged from foreign investment restrictions to openness to international trade.
THE GOVERNMENT should work towards awarding at least 10 more public-private partnership (PPP) projects this year for the economy to even hit the low end of growth targets, an economist said, with that level also expected to help plug the gaps in required infrastructure.
