(PNA photo by Avito C. Dalan)lam/acd MANILA, July 13 (PNA) – The landmark decision of an international tribunal in The Hague upholding the Philippines’ sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea is a “victory for all,” former President Benigno S. Aquino III said. Now that the United Nations-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration has clearly rejected China’s expansive claims to the entire West Philippine Sea, Aquino said the ruling “establishes better conditions that enable countries to engage each other, bearing in mind their duties and rights within a context that espouses equality and amity.” In a statement, Aquino lauded the historic ruling on the case lodged by the Philippines against China in 2013, as he expressed elation that all points raised by the Philippines have been affirmed. ”We want to thank the Permanent Court of Arbitration for their fair judgment, and we would also like to extend our gratitude for the clarity with which they presented their ruling,” Aquino said. The tribunal ruled that there is no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to a “nine-dash line”; that three disputed areas Panganiban Reef, Ayungin Shoal and Recto Bank form part of Read More …

(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Vice President Leni Robredo dared big business on Tuesday to help her build over one million affordable houses that will help uplift the lives of the poor without necessarily sacrificing profit. Robredo, who chairs the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), said she was looking at the medium to high-rise models deployed in Hong Kong and Singapore. She cited a Phinma Properties project in Quezon City where former informal settlers pay a P2,000 monthly amortization for 26-square meter homes through Pag-Ibig, the state housing fund. “We will disrupt and innovate. We will enjoin the private sector to be our partners in providing not just houses, but decent and affordable communities where our people will find jobs, where their children can safely go to school, attend church, run around and play safely,” Robredo told a business conference. “We are not asking for your charity,” she added. Robredo said she would improve coordination among agencies under the HUDCC which tend to work “on their own.” “We have a lot of cleaning up and straightening of policies so we can be more effective,” she said. The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) conducts another surprise “urine” drug test at Camp Karingal in Quezon City on Monday. The test was part of the new Philippine National Police leadership’s efforts to cleanse the police ranks of scalawags.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Sr. Supt. Leonardo Carlos said on Tuesday that the investigations on the killings of drug suspects are still ongoing and that no case has been closed just yet. Carlos said police are still investigating about 103 reported killings of alleged drug personalities from May 10 to July 3. “Wala pa po, ongoing po ‘yan. As information come in, kung mayroon pong nakikita po ‘yung imbestigador natin na irregularity sa na-conduct na operation, kagaya po ng nangyari sa Pasay, ay automatic po ‘yung dalawang involved na police ay pinatanggal ng regional director habang isinasagawa ang investigation,” Carlos said when asked how many cases have already been closed. In Pasay City, an arrested drug suspect and his father were killed inside a police station after the suspect allegedly tried to grab the gun of a policeman who was removing his handcuff. The family immediately proceeded to the police staion and questioned the legality of the arrest, noting that the police had no arrest warrant against the suspected drug suspect. In the television interview, Carlos said: “In these cases, we ask the complainants to submit their complaints para maimbestigahan po. Kasi immediately po after these killings, kami po ay nagsasagawa agad ng investigation.” He explained Read More …

Huwag na bigyan ng pressure. Kapag nandiyan siya ay sobra ang saya ko at iyon naman ang importante.” The two were speaking to reporters after a pictorial for “How To Be Yours,” an upcoming light-hearted romance film directed by Dan Villegas (“Walang Forever”). THE LANDMARK ruling favoring the Philippines against China in its territorial row over the West Philippine Sea is unlikely to affect the local economy, Moody’s Investors Service said, and will not merit adjustments to the country’s investment grade rating.
THE Asian Development Bank (ADB) in a statement said its president, Takehiko Nakao, met on Wednesday with President Rodrigo R. Duterte to explore ways the institution can support his administration’s efforts in promoting sustainable growth, reducing poverty, and increasing transparency in government affairs.
Just a couple of months ago, the country held its elections which generated a good slice of nationwide buzz from when it kicked off up to the official announcement of the winning candidates. From the countless headlines the recent election season brought, the one that stood out for me was the Comelec breach. The breach caused an uproar because it exposed the sensitive personal information of 55 million registered voters through a hacking attack.
