DND meets with Russia to explore possible military cooperation

The Philippines has reached out to global power Russia to strengthen military capability amid lingering South China Sea disputes, threats of terrorism, and transnational crimes. Philippine defense officials met with the Russian Federal Service for MilitaryTechnical Cooperation (FSMTC) to explore military cooperation to strengthen the country’s military capability and defense training for Philippine military and police officers. Foreign secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. said Russia’s global stature and wide experience in conflict prevention can contribute efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the Asia Pacific. “One of the most pressing challenges in the region is keeping a stable, predictable and peaceful maritime order, particularly in the South China Sea,” said Yasay in a speech at the 40th anniversary of PhilippinesRussia bilateral relations. Yasay said the Philippines recognizes the importance of the South China Sea, “as one of the main arteries of global trade, to the continued favorable economic outlook of the Asia Pacific region.” The Asia Pacific region, he said, is a strategic hub for global economic growth, and countries in the region navigate through the disputed waters of South China Sea. “Therefore, we all have a legitimate stake in maintaining peace and security in the region through peaceful means and the rule of international law,” said Yasay in a speech, a copy of which was posted in the Facebook account of the Philippine ambassador to Russia, Carlo Sorreta. The recent visit of high officials of the Department of National Defense (DND) to Russia is part of the thrusts of the Read More …

Pacquiao channels Duterte: Other nations shouldn’t meddle with PH

Manny Pacquiao. AP FILE PHOTO No other country can interfere with Philippine affairs, neophyte Senator Manny Pacquiao said on Wednesday, reacting to Senator Leila de Lima’s call for the United Nations to come to the Philippines and look into the alleged spate of extrajudicial killings here. “It’s a very wrong move na gagawin natin no? Walang pwedeng makiaalam dito sa atin, sa problema natin. Sa atin ito. Hindi pwedeng makisawsaw ang ibang bansa,” Pacquiao told reporters. (That will be a wrong move on our part. No one can interfere with us, with our problems. We should be the ones to take on these issues. Other countries cannot meddle.) READ: Duterte slams UN for ‘interfering’ in Philippine drug war He said President Rodrigo Duterte wanted nothing else but what is only good for the country. “Hindi naman naging Pangulo ‘yan para sa kanyang sarili. Ayaw nga n’ya ng corruption, ayaw n’ya ng drugs. Kung baga ang ginagawa ng Pangulo ay para sa kabutihan ng ating bansa,” said the senator. (He did not become president just to serve himself. He is upset with corruption and drugs. He does things with the good of the country in mind.) “Meron talagang dapat disiplinahin dahil may mga matititgas ang ulo e. Ngayon kung sumunod naman lahat, hind naman siguro ganun mag-disiplina rin ang ating Pangulo (We need discipline because there are those who are obstinate. Now if we follow laws, I don’t think the president would take those measures to discipline us),” he said, apparently Read More …

Lopez says no decision yet despite Semirara's claims of positive audit

Last month, the Environment department required the country’s largest coal mine to explain alleged violations in its Molave Coal Mine Expansion Project. File photo MANILA, Philippines — Environment Secretary Gina Lopez has maintained that there is no decision yet on Consunji-led Semirara Mining and Power Corp.’s (SMPC) environment compliance despite the company’s claims of a positive result of the agency’s recently concluded mining audit. “I am shocked and that’s an understatement that the regional director of EMB (Environmental Management Bureau) sent a report, showed it to the mining company without the knowledge of the EMB director, or even the head of the audit for that matter,” Lopez said in a text message to The STAR. “We’re still gonna go over it. I’m very careful about just saying anything because it will send a message,” Lopez said. Ahead of audit result announcement, Semirara has requested last week from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-EMB (DENR-EMB) Region 6 (Western Visayas) the copies of the reports and disclosed it to the local bourse yesterday. “That’s so out of protocol and leaves to serious doubt the validity for that report. We’re having a full day planning with many of our scientists to make sure that the audit report covers all angles and is within current DENR standards. That report is absolutely premature and that regional director is in hot water,” Lopez said. Last month, the DENR required the country’s largest coal mine to explain alleged violations in its Molave Coal Mine Expansion Project or face Read More …

What was intended to be an intimate gathering to welcome LA’s top public official from the Philippines turned out to be not so with Pinoys from various parts of Southern California coming in force for the event. Newly installed Consul General Adelio Angelito Cruz, turned out to be a “crowd drawer” with some attendees coming from as far as San Diego to meet him at the Original Lapid Filipino Cuisine in Bellflower known for its delicious Filipino food fares. The President met with the survivors and victims of the Davao blast to extend assistance to them. Duterte said young terrorists who identify themselves with the Islamic State (IS) still remember the atrocities of the past such as the 1906 Bud Dajo massacre. “The young don’t belong to any organization, they are identified with the ISIS. They have sworn allegiance already to the Isis,” he said. Atrocities against the Moro people in Mindanao may have happened decades ago but remain as if it happened yesterday, Duterte said. He said he knew there would be an explosion in the city due to his all-out offensive against the Abu Sayyaf. “I knew na puputok dito. Lawyer Angela Librado, a member of the GRP panel, said the final bilateral ceasefire is one of the major items during the next Oslo talks. Last August, both the Philippine government (GRP) and NDF agreed on implementing their respective ceasefires. President Rodrigo Duterte re-imposed ceasefire on August 22 and this was reciprocated by the NDF at the close of the resumption of talks last August 26. Librado explained a unified ceasefire agreement is necessary so that they can come up with deadlines. “We gave ourselves 60 days to draft (the bilateral truce),” Librado said during Monday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM Davao Annex. Librado said the unified ceasefire agreement is crucial because it enables both parties to go around and seek consultations on the substantive agenda, one of which is the socioeconomic reforms. Librado is optimistic both panels will achieve the Read More …

Mayon Volcano poses danger even without looming blast

By Catherine J. Teves Mayon Volcano on September 23, 1984: Pyroclastic flows descend the south-eastern flank of Mayon Volcano, Philippines. Then, the maximum height of the eruption column was 15 km above sea level, and volcanic ash fell within about 50 km toward the west. There were no casualties from the 1984 eruption because more than 73,000 people evacuated the danger zones as recommended by scientists of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. (Mayon VolcanoPublic Domain C.G. Newhall, Wikipedia) MANILA  (PNA) – A major eruption isn’t yet imminent in Mayon Volcano but this mountain still poses danger due to continuing volcanic activities there. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) science research specialist Ryan Rebadulla cautioned against such danger, noting rockfalls from earthquakes in Mayon and phreatic eruptions from contact of ground water and this mountain’s hot rocks are among life-threatening occurrences possible anytime and almost without warning. He said landslides and avalanche at the middle to upper slope as well as sudden ash puffs are also possible in Mayon. “We advise people to avoid entering Mayon’s permanent danger zone (PDZ),” he said. The PDZ covers an area with a six-kilometer radius measured from Mayon’s summit. Rising some 2.46 km in Albay province, Mayon Volcano is considered the world’s perfect cone. Mayon’s beauty and symmetry is world-famous even if Phivolcs said this volcano already registered around 49 historical eruptions. Among precursors to such eruptions were increased seismicity level and steam emissions, crater glow due to presence of magma at Read More …

Will Geneva Cruz make a PHL showbiz comeback?

Geneva Cruz (MNS photo) Singer and former actress Geneva Cruz admitted that she only planned to stay in the Philippines for a couple of days to attend a friend’s wedding, but a problem involving her passport has extended her trip. “Nag-expire iyong passport ko,” she said. But her slight misfortune did not stop Cruz, who is currently based in London with her two children, from enjoying her return to her home country. Based on her recent Instagram posts, Cruz took advantage of her misfortune and went to Balesin with her best friend, Rachel Alejandro. “Iyong beach, iyong mga kaibigan ko, lalo na iyong pamilya ko. And I love the weather, the food, and the people siyempre,” said Cruz when asked about the things she missed the most about the Philippines. Not everything has been rosy, however. On her Twitter account, Cruz wrote a rant about “constantly being judged” and that she is “excited to go home.” “People, they tend to judge you based on what they know about your past. And they don’t even know the ‘truth’ behind everything, like my behavior and actions before,” she said. “Sa kanila kasi puwedeng mistakes, but I don’t think people really make mistakes. For example, having children. No way! My children will never be mistakes to me,” Cruz continued. “Probably hindi nag-work iyong relationship pero sa akin, ang greatest accomplishment ko is mga anak ko. Sa States kasi parang mas free ako to whatever I want without being judged.” Cruz has had two Read More …
