Arroyo: Duterte much stronger leader than I am

President Rodrigo R. Duterte talks to a wounded victim of the Davao City bombing incident during his visit at the Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City. (MNS photo) MANILA, Sept 5 (Mabuhay) – Former president and now Pampanga representative Gloria Arroyo on Monday threw her support behind President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of “state of lawlessness” in the wake of the Davao City blast last Friday. Arroyo said Duterte is in the best position to declare a state of lawlessness to crush any threat to the country’s peace and order. She believes that law enforcers would not abuse their authority, amid concerns that the situation will be used as an excuse to violate human rights. President Rodrigo R. Duterte comforts the families of the victims of the bombing incident in Davao City that left 14 people dead and over 60 others injured on Sept. 3, 2016. (MNS photo) “I did not experience them being abusive, and I don’t think they will be abusive now,” Arroyo said in a press briefing. “President Duterte is a much stronger leader than I am so if could handle them he can handle them even better,” Arroyo added. The President’s aides said the declaration simply meant that the police could call on the military to help suppress security threats. The declaration will not amount to martial law, nor will it lead to the suspension of civil rights, they said. In 2003, Arroyo placed Davao City under a “state of lawlessness” after successive attacks on the Read More …

Issue of ‘lawless violence’ may be raised before SC: Escudero

A SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics) officer mans the passenger departure entrance of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport-Terminal 2 on Sunday. Travelers are advised to arrive early for their respective flights as security at airport terminals were tightened after the blast that hit a night market in Davao City on Friday evening. (MNS photo) MANILA, Sept 5 (Mabuhay) — The state of lawless violence declared by President Rodrigo Duterte could be raised before the Supreme Court if only to allay the fears of the people, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero said on Monday. Escudero explained that unlike martial law, the President can declare a state of lawless violence even without the approval of Congress. “Ang epekto lamang naman nito (state of lawless violence) ay pwede nyang gamitin ang Armed Forces of the Philippines para i-suppress ito. Sa totoo lang ginagamit na naman nya sa Sulu laban sa Abu Sayaff at sa mahabang panahon, ginagamit na yan ng mga nauna na ring presidente. Armed Forces mismo ang nagpapatupad na ng peace and order operations ng ating bansa at hindi ang Philippine National Police. That’s all that it means,” he told reporters. Members of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) hold a candle lighting rally in front of the Quiapo Church in Manila on Saturday, as they call for justice for the victims of the night market blast in Davao late Friday evening. Dead men tell no tales

We’ve heard of it before. Dead men tell no tales This is exactly what happened to Iloilo top drug lord Melvin Odicta. For those who missed it, he and his wife Meriam were shot dead early Monday morning by unidentified assailants after exiting from the Port of Caticlan in Aklan. The assailants, according to the police, managed to escape under the cover of darkness. The couple were on their way home to Iloilo when the shooting occurred. The Odictas came from Manila where they had a meeting with DILG Secretary Ismael Sueno, where they denied their involvement in the illegal drugs business. The Odictas, police reports revealed, have been on the watchlist of the Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency (PDEA), however. Despite being in the watchlist for so many years, the Odictas were never invited for questioning by law enforcement agencies regarding their alleged links with drug syndicates or their involvement in the proliferation of illegal drugs in the Western Visayas region. This angle should be “looked into” by the police – to find out who among the top politicians of Iloilo as well as high ranking police officers might have shielded the Odicta couple from being harassed by law enforcement agencies. President Duterte said recently Iloilo is the most “shabolized” province in the country. I don’t know why Senator Frank Drilon, who is from Iloilo and one of the most outspoken politicians in the country today, is surprisingly silent on this matter. Maybe the senator is just busy gloating on Read More …

Sunshine Dizon maintains good relationship with in-laws

Sunshine Dizon (MNS photo) Sunshine Dizon has refused to let the legal battle between her and Timothy Tan affect the relationship that she and her children have with her husband’s parents. Speaking to reporters, Dizon explained the recent photo which she posted on Instagram of her and her two children with Tan’s father. “I never had a problem with the family of Tim, especially my father-in-law. Hindi na lang napag-uusapan [’yung gulo] pero ayaw ko ring umabot sa point na maapektuhan ‘yung relasyon ko sa father-in-law ko, or ng mga anak ko sa father-in-law ko because he is a very decent and good man. He is truly like my second father,” she said. Dizon said she feels her father-in-law’s concern when it comes to their marital woes but stressed that he actually does not meddle with it. “We just avoid talking about it. Sabi nga ng father-in-law ko, he is praying and hoping na maaayos pero hindi para diktahan niya ako kung anong dapat kong gawin because may sarili akong decision and hindi rin para mangunsinti sila dahil may maling nagawa,” she said. Nonetheless, Dizon said she understands where her father-in-law is coming from when he expressed that he is hoping she and Tan could still fix their marriage. Is there any effort on Tan’s part to mend their relationship? “I don’t want to elaborate. Actually kasi may gag order. I’m not sure if I’m privy to say this in public pero sa mga anak niya, maayos naman siya sa Read More …

Duterte willing to talk with Misuari in KL or anywhere in PHL

By Cielito M. Reganit President Rodrigo R. Duterte assures wounded soldiers of continuous financial assistance during a fellowship dinner in Malacañan’s Heroes’ Hall on August 29, National Heroes Day. (MNS photo) MANILA  (PNA) – President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said that he is amenable to meeting with Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) chieftain Nur Misuari in Kuala Lumpur, or anywhere in the Philippines – even in Malacañang – in order to speed up the peace process in Mindanao. “I talked with Misuari last night (Tuesday), and he proposed that we meet in Kuala Lumpur in front of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Sabi ko: Dalian mo Nur, we are wasting lives here,” Duterte said during an interview with reporters at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) prior to his departure for Zamboanga City. The President went to Zamboanga to visit the wake of the 15 fallen soldiers who died in an ongoing operation against the extremist Abu Sayyaf group. Duterte said he also told Misuari that is also willing to waive the arrest warrant against the MNLF leader so that a dialogue could be undertaken in the Philippines if the latter so desired. “Nur, I have no intention of detaining you or placing you in the custody of the government. You can simply walk out there, ask any soldier and police to escort you. Kung saan ako, mag-usap tayo,” the President related. He said this could easily be done since as Commander-in-Chief, he would just order the police and Read More …
