PHL economy growth pace quickens to 6.5% in the 2nd qtr

The Philippine economy grew at a sizzling pace in the second quarter, topping expectations due to a government-led construction boom and an extended rebound in the farm sector. Construction of new buildings [by Romeo Ranoco (REUTERS) via Daily News] The Southeast Asian nation is the second-fastest growing economy in Asia after China. Gross domestic product rose 6.5 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier, the national statistics agency said, picking up from the 6.4 percent pace in the first quarter, and above the 6.2 percent forecast in a Reuters poll. Quarter-on-quarter growth at 1.7 percent also topped the 1.6 percent pace projected in a Reuters poll, and faster than the previous quarter’s upwardly revised 1.3 percent. Like its regional neighbors, the Philippines has benefited from an improvement in global demand, with exports up nearly 14 percent in the six months to June. Household consumption grew at slightly faster annual pace of 5.9 percent in the second quarter compared with 5.8 percent in the first, while government spending jumped 7.1 percent in a dramatic rise from the revised 0.1 percent gain in the March quarter. “The sequential increase implies that the economy is gaining momentum,” said ANZ economist Eugenia Fabon Victorino in a note to clients.   The post PHL economy growth pace quickens to 6.5% in the 2nd qtr appeared first on Good News Pilipinas. Nabas Wind Farm powers Boracay, Western Visayas

The Nabas Wind Farm in Aklan is now regularly supplying clean and renewable power to the Western Visayas (WV) grid, thanks to 18 giant wind turbines which have also become tourist attractions in the once sleepy town. Nabas Wind Farm [via Facebook] Situated in Barangay Pawa, about 25 kilometers from world-renowned Boracay beaches, the Nabas Wind Farm is the biggest single venture of the province costing over Php4 billion. A tourism plan for the wind farm is being set up to benefit the 35,000 population of the town’s 20 barangays. The 18 turbines are part of the first phase of the project which now supplies 36-megawatt (MW) of clean power to the WV grid. Underway is the additional seven turbines which could generate an added 14 MW to the power grid, according to the PNA report. Nabas Mayor James Solanoy, in the PNA interview, said, “The project has brought economic gains and increased the tourism potential of the town.” Solanoy said, “The town is earning millions in terms of taxes. Job opportunities were likewise opened for the people of Nabas as the wind turbines continue to attract tourists, especially from Boracay.” The mayor added that most of the power generated from the wind farm that goes to the grid is supplied to Aklan especially Boracay, an island that hosted 1.7 million tourists in 2016. But more than its economic benefits, Solanoy said renewable sources of power must be pushed for the protection of the environment. “We now experience the evidence Read More …

12 Similarities Between an Entrepreneur and a Parent

How does one get into the entrepreneurial mindset? Typically, an entrepreneur would create a plan to guide him. An entrepreneur will also continuously assess himself to determine his personal strengths, while making use of the resources available, and responding to unforeseen events. When things don’t go according to plan, an entrepreneur does not give up easily. He weighs all the possibilities — both positive and negative, but still remains calm, persistent, and hopeful that everything he planned will eventually materialize. In a way, becoming an entrepreneur is a lot like becoming a parent. SIMILARITIES BETWEEN A PARENT AND AN ENTREPRENEUR Running a household is like running a company. Why? You never know what’s coming until it strikes you. There are a lot of books that claim to help you get through any situation. But you realize the magnitude of a challenge only when you are already caught up in it. You learn that life is constantly changing. You realize that you need to adapt quickly to the ever-changing world, or you'll get left out and won’t have the faintest idea how to get on with your life. You doubt your own capabilities. You learn through experience to hone your skills and do your job responsibly. You had the no idea who you would become. When you were younger, you may never have imagined putting diapers on your baby as a parent, or being thankful for technology as an entrepreneur.
