South Korea Allows Visa-free Entry Via Olympic City Pyeongchang

Image via Jung Yeon-Je/AFP/Getty Images Looking to visit South Korea without the hassle of filing for a Visa? Then consider entering through Pyeongchang, the host city of the 2018 Winter Games, located 180 kilometers from Seoul. For a limited time, the government of South Korea will be allowing visitors from Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam to enter the country without a visa if they enter in groups and through the YangYang International Airport according to Yonhap News, the state-run news agency. It’s one of the moves of the South Korean government to boost tourism during the Winter Olympics, which will run from February 9 to 25. Visa-free entry into South Korea via Pyeongchang will be possible until April of 2018. Previously Philippine passport holders could only enter South Korea visa-free through Jeju Island, without an option to leave and visit other cities in the country without a visa. Seoul is also trying to attract more Chinese tourists into the country, after a controversial decision to allow the US’s THAAD missile defense system to be installed within its territory saw Sino relations drop. South Korea will extend the $15 visa fee waiver for Chinese tourists with electronic passports until the end of 2018. A Different Breed Of Maute Is Helping Refugees Get Back On Their Feet

Image via Rappler The name Maute has been a plague for people in Marawi, thanks to the two extremist Islamic brothers that led the attack on Marawi City on May 23, 2017.  The attack triggered a 5-month siege and a humanitarian crisis, and displaced nearly 5 million residents because of the fighting. But for one barangay in town of Balo-i, Lanao del Norte, the Maute name is carried by a village chief, a woman no less, now leading the efforts to help shelter thousands of evacuees from the besieged city. 32-year old Okura Samporna Pacalundo-Maute is the village chief of Barangay Pacalundo. Mother of 10, Okura is a widower, her husband gunned down by political rivals more than a year ago. She became village chief when elders led by sultans asked her to lead after the demise of her husband. But despite the events of May 23, she still doesn’t mind if visitors address her as Captain Maute. “It’s just a name,” she told Rappler in an interview. “Dahil tradisyon, tayong mga babae ang mga pangalan natin galing sa mga lalaki – sa tatay o asawa. Pero puwede namang hindi, puwede tayong mamili (Because of tradition, we women take the names of the men in our lives – our father or husband. But we can choose not to).” Her colleagues now refer to her as Cap. “My husband was a good man and public servant. I honor his name. But I will also strive to be a good human being, Read More …

The first Asian Obstacle Course Race Championships will be hosted by the Philippines in 2018. The racing championships will be held on January 27, 2018 at the Aseana City, along J.W. Diokno Blvd. between Aseana and Bradco Avenues, Paranaque City. Pilipinas Obstacle Sports Federation (POSF), organizers of the regional meet, announced there will be two categories for Obstacle Course Racers (OCRacers), the Elite/ Pro and Age-Groups/ Open with a total of $4,500 in prizes at stake. POSF revealed in the event launch that the footrace will involve climbing ropes and over walls, carrying heavy objects, traversing bodies of water, crawling under barbed wire and jumping through fire, among others. The organizers caution would be participants that obstacle racing require physically and mentally tough individuals who want to exceed their limits. POSF President Alberto C. Agra called on OCRacers to prepare well for the championships. “Training is very important. We want racers to be fully prepared because the obstacle courses are really difficult. The satisfaction and fulfillment of finishing the race bring pride to the athlete. It’s very sentimental,” Agra said in a Philippine Star report. Invitations have been sent to more than 1,500 racing enthusiasts from Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines. The country’s hosting duties led by POSF has been sanctioned by the International Obstacle Sports Federation (OSF) and Obstacle Sports Federation Asia (OSF Asia). Is Non-Food Franchising for you?

Armando Bartolome There was a time when the franchising business almost always involved food. Famous brands like Mang Inasal, Fiorgelato, Lotsa Pizza, and Rice In A Box were then the darlings of the franchising world. But soon enough, non-food franchising businesses such as pharmacies, nail salons, pawnshops, travel agencies and other businesses took off. Today, some of the most promising non-food franchising businesses are: Tutorial Centers Ink Refilling Stations Fragrance Shops Nail Salons and Spas Laundry Shops By next year, there will be more non-food businesses opening up. The capital needed to launch these businesses may range from P200,000 to P3 million. Read Related Advice: How to choose the right franchise At the recent Franchise Expo held last July 23 at the SMX in Pasay, there were more than 600 brands that joined. One of the non-food businesses that caught my eye was a company that sells “pre-loved” luxury items like bags. This only goes to show that there are lots of possibilities on what kind of business you can start. You just need to squeeze your creative juices to come up with something unique that can get the attention of consumers. Read Related Advice: Currently Employed and Franchisee At The Same Time? IS FRANCHISING FOR YOU? A few years ago, I wrote: “Is Franchising For You?” a book meant to serve as a guide for entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs alike. Some of the points I raised in the book are: Starting a franchise business means signing an agreement with Read More …
