Derek Ramsay has a soft spot for the homeless. Since 2010, the actor has helped build shelters for many of them through his partnership with Habitat for Humanities.

“We are part of a big family and it’s just right to help those members who are in need or struggling,” he said. “Mas masarap matulog kapag alam mong nakatulong ka sa ibang tao.”

There’s still a long way to go. According to Derek, there are still over five million families in the countries living in inadequate conditions. They hope to lessen this number in time.

A few days ago, the actor, along with Habitat for Humanities executives, in partnership with the Manila Bulletin, launched the “Plus Can Project.” Unlike the ordinary donation can, the Plus Can has a unique coin slot in the shape of a plus sign.

“It is meant to be symbolic as if to say that by donating, everyone can be a plus to somebody’s life,” he explained. “I really hope we can build more houses through this effort.”

The target they’ve set is 800,000 houses by 2020.

Derek cited how the Plus Can project could be a way for parents to teach their kids about the value of giving.

“It is not just about saving for yourself, it’s saving for a good cause,” he pointed out.

Derek, himself, bought 100 Plus Can. These are available on www.pluscanproject.org at P500.

“I will go out there and share the word and fill the can with donations.”

Apart from doing charity work, Derek is shooting the Regal film offering “The Escort” co-starring Lovi Poe. He said his role veers from the usual sexy characters he has played in the past.

“This is drama naman,” he said. “I told them I want to do away with sexy roles muna and do something different.”

Asked on his dream role, Derek shared, “I want to play Lapu-Lapu in a historical film. That’s my dream. Unfortunately, wala akong alam sa pagpo-produce kaya antay nalang muna.”

On the TV front, Derek maintained he is staying with TV5.

“Jumping networks never crossed my mind kasi I have a responsibility to my network and I will do anything to help my network grow,” he said.

Nonetheless, Derek is giving himself a maximum of 10 more years in show business.

“By then, I would just want to tend to our beach in Palawan siguro, living a much relaxed lifestyle,” he said with a smile like he’s already there.(MNS)
