DoH, WHO beef up preps vs Ebola virus

DoH, WHO beef up preps vs Ebola virus. At the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa City on Tuesday, October 21, Health Secretary Enrique Ona and Dr. Julie Hall, World Health Organization country representative, demonstrate how the Department of Health and WHO are preparing in case of an Ebola virus outbreak in the country. Hospitals and Department of Health facilities tasked to screen and treat people for Ebola are ready with protective suits and special equipment needed to respond to any suspected Ebola cases, Secretary Enrique Ona said in a news conference Tuesday.

“We have got everything that is necessary to make sure that we will be able to prevent the entry of this virus in the country,” Ona said.

The personal protective equipment (PPE) consist of fluid-proof full-body suits with boots, face masks, and double-layered gloves. The protective suits are needed because of the Ebola virus infects persons through direct contact via body openings, including eyes and mouth.

The DOH also has portable respirators and negative pressure isolation rooms at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and at some hospitals specially-quipped and trained to deal with highly-inflectious diseases. Rie Takumi/ELR, GMA News
