The Super Chess Grandmaster of Chinese-Filipino descent was dressed in Barong Tagalog as he received his trophy and USD 50,000 cash prize.

The 23-year- old So was undefeated in the 11-round tournament but tied with Onischuk with 7.0 points in the standings.

The former Philippine National Team member played against the former Latvian chess GM in the playoffs in two 30-minute games.

So won the first game in white 31 moves and drew the second, giving him a 1.5-0.5 victory to earn the championship title.

"I really wanted to win this one this year . . . because it's the strongest national competition in the world. All the great (US) players have won this one," the Bacoor, Cavite-born chess GM said in a Star Tribune report.

The win affirms So’s standing as the No. 1 US chess player and No.2 in the world, proving that he has the best chances to beat the current No. 1 world champion, Magnus Carlsen of Norway.

So can play against the world champion if he wins the next Candidates Tournament scheduled towards the end of this year.

So was ranked No. 99 in the world when went to the US on a college chess scholarship in 2012.

Since then the Filipino GM turned professional player for the US, dominating elite international competitions since July 2016 and is now on a 67-game winning streak.

So next competes in Azerbaijan, Norway, Paris, Belgium, Spain, St. Louis, Georgia and London.

Toyota, GM recalls push US to near-record pace

DETROIT (AP) – Big US recalls by General Motors and Toyota have put the auto industry on a record pace as companies try to avoid bad publicity and punishment from an increasingly aggressive government. On Wednesday, Toyota announced it was recalling nearly 1.8 million vehicles in the US to fix a spate of problems, including air bags that might not inflate. It’s part of a worldwide recall of 6.4 million cars and trucks. So far this year, automakers have recalled about nine million vehicles in the US. If that pace continues, the nation would break the record of 30.8 million recalled vehicles set in 2004. Most of the recalls are from Toyota and General Motors, two automakers that are under government scrutiny and facing bad publicity and allegations that they concealed safety issues. Toyota’s latest recalls were announced before the company even developed specific repairs. They come two weeks after the Justice Department skewered the Japanese automaker for covering up problems that caused unintended acceleration in some cars starting in 2009. Toyota agreed to pay $1.2 billion to settle that case, but federal prosecutors can resurrect a wire fraud charge if the company fails to comply with the terms of the settlement. Toyota’s actions come as rival GM recalls 2.6 million small cars for defective ignition switches the company links to at least 13 deaths. Of those, 2.2 million are in the US. As that crisis unfolded, GM announced recalls of another 3.4 million US vehicles. Business ( Article MRec Read More …

GM says almost driverless cars coming by 2020

MILFORD, Michigan (AP) — Sometime before the end of this decade, General Motors will put a car on the road that can almost drive itself. The automaker says the system, called “Super Cruise,” uses radar and cameras to steer the car and keep it between lane lines. Also, the radar keeps the car a safe distance from cars ahead of it, and it will brake to a complete stop if necessary. GM and other automakers such as Mercedes, BMW and Lexus already offer radar-guided cruise control systems that keep their cars a safe distance from other vehicles and even stop before a crash. They also have systems that warn the driver if they’re drifting out of their lane. But until recently, engineers haven’t been able to steer with computers, according to GM. “The steering control is the big additional piece,” said John Capp, GM’s director of electrical controls and active safety technology. On Wednesday, engineers showed off the system for reporters at the company’s testing grounds in Milford, Mich., north of Detroit. The system adds control of electric power steering to off-the-shelf technology that’s now available. Although they still have bugs to work out, a Cadillac SRX SUV equipped with the technology worked very well. Capp says a lot of development work still needs to be done about road conditions, reaction of sensors, visibility of lane lines and how the system will interact with the driver, who still would be in control and can easily override the computer system. US auto sales roar back in May

A buyer moves between rows of 2013 Ram pickup trucks and Dart sedans at a Dodge dealership in Littleton, Colorado. Chrysler’s US sales rose 11 percent in May, a sign that auto sales rebounded from a slight dip in April and will continue to boost the US economy. AP DETROIT (AP) – Full-size pickups once again dominated US auto sales in May, as small businesses – increasingly confident in the economy – raced to replace the aging pickups they held on to during the recession. Car buyers, too, were lured by low interest rates and Memorial Day sales. Overall, US consumers bought 1.4 million vehicles in May, up eight percent from the same month a year ago, according to Autodata Corp. The results suggest the auto industry will remain a bright spot in an economy that’s been slowed by weak manufacturing. And the boost from the industry will help sustain the economy’s steady job growth. Most automakers topped analysts’ expectations last month, with Nissan reporting its highest May sales ever after cutting prices on seven popular models. Chrysler, Ford, Honda and Toyota also reported increases. Only Volkswagen’s sales were down from last May. Automakers sold 173,972 full-size pickups in May, the highest total since a year-end rush last December, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. Sales of Ford’s F-Series pickup, which is the country’s best-selling vehicle, rose 31 percent to a six-year high of 71,604. General Motors and Chrysler also posted full-size truck sales gains of more than 20 percent. Those sales Read More …

US auto sales power ahead in February

DETROIT (AP) — Americans want new cars and trucks, and they’re not letting higher gas prices or political dysfunction stand in their way. New car and truck sales were up four percent in February as rising home construction and cheap financing kept the US auto recovery on track. While the pace of growth is slowing, industry analysts expect more gains in the coming months, saying there’s little that could derail demand for new cars. Car buyers have already shrugged off higher Social Security taxes, which cut their take-home pay starting in January. Gas prices — which rose 36 cents to $3.78 per gallon in February — didn’t change their habits, either. And they ignored the debate over automatic spending cuts that were due to take effect Friday. “Quite frankly, we think most of America is getting a little tired of hearing about some of the dysfunction,” said Kurt McNeil, General Motors Co.’s US sales chief. “We think the fundamentals are strong and that’s what’s important, and that’s what’s driving the economy.” February sales hit an annualized rate of 15.4 million cars and trucks. That’s still short of the recent peak of close to 17 million in 2005, but it’s quite healthy compared with the anemic 10.4 million recorded during the recession in 2009. The industry isn’t likely to see the double-digit monthly gains it saw last year, when Japanese automakers came roaring back after the 2011 earthquake in Japan. Instead, auto companies are settling in for a period of slower Read More …
