Manny V. Pangilinan, Chairman of the PLDT Group and Lance Gokongwei president and chief operating officer of JG Summit Holdings Inc. hope for economic progress for our country this 2014.

For the past weeks, I have shared the wishes of many entrepreneurs who have been part of the Go Negosyo’s journey in helping many of our youth and small entrepreneurs pursue their dreams by inspiring and mentoring them. Many of them share a personal wish of a balanced life, as many entrepreneurs who are so passionate in their businesses begin to realize the importance of the other more valuable intangibles in life.  In the case of Jojo Claudio, he talks about spending more quality time with his children, putting a balance between work and family time, and this is the same with many of our women entrepreneurs.

It is very clear that many of them are happy with the current administration’s objective of improving the level of government transparency and its fight against corruption. Many wish P-Noy all the success to see this happen before his term ends. Many hope to see the level of poverty in our country reduced and this is why they have spent time in joining the many activities of Go Negosyo as they feel a booming negosyo is the lasting solution to poverty.

While our country in the last quarter has been hit with calamities, the Filipino spirit is very much alive, not only resilient, and that many view the year 2014 to bring about a new beginning. We are not starting from scratch as we have seen the resurgence in our economy and investment and business confidence re-established, together with all the investment-grade ratings and bullish economic statistics. But expectations are much higher now from the Filipino people and the investing community, specially the foreign investors.

Filipinos want to see a better quality of life for all, and not only some.  We all want to see inclusive growth that benefits the majority. While some expectations may be too idealistic as to totally eradicating corruption at all levels, or solving traffic among others, all these will take time; a long-term cultural revolution that should involve everyone, not just the government.

A lot of pressure will be on this government to see the promised public-private partnership take place in the last few years of the administration.  Even if this will all be awarded today, many of them will not be finished during his term but at least he can say it was implemented during his term. We need to start seeing the modern airports; major super highways among many others begin to move, since all these projects have huge multiplier effects on the economy. While many in the executive branch are very careful to avoid being criticized of corruption, like entrepreneurs, they will have to take certain risks and start awarding critical projects so that the infrastructures will help sustain the kind of growth this country needs to attain.

In every negosyo, one needs to invest to sustain and support the growth it aims to hit. If we would like to see the Philippines grow, as Bounty Fresh’s Tennyson Chen points out in his wish, at seven percent for the next five years, the key to this is for the PPP to move at a faster pace.

Jojo S. Claudio Jr., president and CEO, Quorum Holdings Corp.wishes to spend more “quality” time with my family, specially his daughter. He also said “I want President Aquino and Filipinos at large to succeed in our campaign to rid the Philippine society of graft and corruption. We owe it to our children to fix a broken system in our society.”

Siu Ping Par, COO for franchising of PR Gaz, wishes that the year 2014 would be a period of hope especially for many of our kababayans in the Visayas after Yolanda and that they be filled with more hope and encouragement to help them as they rebuild their lives and wishes for more stability and continued progress in the economy and for our leaders to stay focused on their journey on the daang matuwid.

Rajan Uttamchandani, chairman/CEO Esquire Financing Inc. wishes to develop more entrepreneurs and to encourage entrepreneurship at young age to allow our country’s talent to develop business locally and create more employment and furthermore enhance the development of the economy.

This year, let us be ready to take on the challenges that may come. Let us work together in forming a better Philippines through an enterprising climate and mindset. As they say, let’s start the year right!

Aquino pushes passage of Go Negosyo bill

MANILA, Philippines – In a country where the population continuously grows at a fast pace, the need to come up with more jobs is always a concern for the government. For neophyte Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, the key to providing new jobs for the people is to develop one particular sector of the economy that could have a huge impact on improving the lives of many Filipinos. Following through on his advocacy to promote small businesses as a viable solution to poverty in the country, Aquino has steered what was dubbed as the Go Negosyo bill on its way to its approval on second reading in the Senate. Aquino, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship, has sponsored Senate Bill 2046, which consolidates the bill that he filed with the related bills filed by Senators Sergio Osmeña III, Miriam Defensor Santiago, Jinggoy Estrada, and Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto. In his sponsorship speech, Aquino said that the Go Negosyo bill was crafted to “help our countrymen out of poverty and towards a path to prosperity.” According to Aquino, the bill was also a response to the challenge made to the administration to make the much-touted growth of the economy more meaningful to the masses by making it more inclusive. The Go Negosyo Bill

Sen. Bam Aquino with Go Negosyo’s Executive Director Mon Lopez at the Senate for the GO NEGOSYO BILL sponsorship. For the past eight years, Go Negosyo, thru the entrepreneurs who have become part of this journey of empowering the marginalized sector of negosyantes which is the micro-entrepreneurs, they, the entrepreneurs continue to remain passionate in sharing their resources. The movement of people empowerment is clearly what is needed to help those at the bottom of the pyramid to start to feel the economic benefits that our country over the past three years has started to enjoy. We talk about inclusive growth, well, this is it.  Last Tuesday, we had the privilege of attending the Senate session for the sponsorship of the GO NEGOSYO BILL by Sen. Bam Aquino who, himself, is also a leading social entrepreneur in the country today, with his empowering Hapinoy program for the nanays in the sarisari store retailing business. He understands the plight of the small and micro entrepreneurs. What was admirable in his talk was his continuous commitment to make a difference, by aiming to reduce poverty as the bill’s main goal, and this can be achieved by empowering the micro and small enterprises, to level-up and beat the odds in business. We are one with that objective ever since we started the Go Negosyo advocacy eight years ago, and Bam has been one of the strongest advocates, joining us in many parts of the country, inspiring and mentoring especially the young aspiring entrepreneurs Read More …

Turning hanapbuhay into hanep-buhay

For eight years now, Go Negosyo has been helping Filipinos succeed from poverty through entrepreneurship. We are happy because we are seeing significant progress throughout the years, but our journey of transforming the nation was not easy. Changing the Filipino’s mindset about negosyo an keeping an enterprising attitude has been a constant challenge, but along the way we have met people and institutions who also believe in the advocacy and are willing to help us out. What started as a simple meeting with Cynthia Villar more than four years ago led to a discovery that Go Negosyo and her Villar Foundation have a common purpose: to help uplift the lives of Filipinos. We thought that it is best for our organizations to work together on projects that would directly inspire and empower our countrymen. It resulted in a number of collaborations which eventually led to the OFW and Family Summit, a one-day activity that teaches OFWs and their family members to invest their hard-earned money in a business of their own. I can still remember our amazement at the turnout of the participants, as more than 7,000 people showed up and filled the World Trade Center during our first summit in 2011. Of course, this was a signal for both Cynthia and I to continue what we are doing, and right now we are working on mounting the third summit in November. Now that Cynthia is running in the coming elections, her main platform is to continue encouraging the nation to embrace Read More …

The Women Entrepreneur Icons and Filipina Entrepreneurs of 2013

An international study on entrepreneurship revealed that 70 percent of SME business startups in the Philippines are started by women. This strong number is giving us the impression that women are more entrepreneurial. To sustain this, we at Go Negosyo continue to encourage our Filipinas to take the entrepreneurial route, and eventually create a nation of entrepreneurs that will finally end the evil spell of misery of poverty that has been with us for quite sometime. On March 1, Go Negosyo will mount the 15th Filipina Entrepreneurship Summit at the World Trade Center Manila. In keeping with tradition, Go Negosyo has selected a pool of women entrepreneurs and enablers to recognize their valuable contributions in their respective fields, as well as to promote their stories to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs that they can also make it in life. The two Go Negosyo Women Entrepreneur Icons and the 11 Filipina Entrepreneurs of 2013 came from diverse backgrounds such as education, retail, agriculture, fashion, and medicine, and this shows us that Filipinas can actually carry their multiple burdens and succeed in their chosen fields. Let me share the stories of the inspiring women awardees that we will be recognizing next week. One of Go Negosyo’s Women Entrepreneur Icons is Dr. Helena Z. Benitez of the Philippine Women University. She is probably the oldest active woman enabler in the country because despite being nearly 99 years old, she remains as PWU chairperson. Her life has been a constant source of inspiration for many women Read More …
