LONG BEACH, Calif. – Over 100 religious leaders from across North America and hundreds of university students gathered at the Grand Event Center in Long Beach for the 2014 Religious Leaders Peace Conference, hosted by the international non-profit organization Heavenly Culture, World Peace and Restoration of Light (HWPL). Among those who signed was Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, Director of the Islamic Society of Orange County. The signing of the peace treaty was inspired by the interfaith student peace march that HWPL organized last January in Mindanao, a region in the Philippines suffering violent religious conflict for 40 years. Through the unity of the youth, high officials of Catholicism and Islam were moved to sign a landmark peace treaty that received international media attention. The program also featured a guest panel discussion, highlights and video clips of the signing in Mindanao, a time of united prayer for all faiths, and Read More …

For Thanksgiving, Colina Salon is giving back with glamorous discounts

15-50 % off on beauty treatments & products  Marlou Colina with Peaches and Herb COLINA Salon is enjoying a banner year, thanks to the support of its loyal clients. First, it has expanded with three salons running in 2013, the latest in Rancho Cucamunga. All its major promos – Bonanza Savers, Colors of Spring and Summer Sizzlers—were wildly popular. So were the breakthrough products it introduced to the market: Colina Cosmetics and MC Hair Care. And last month (Sept. 8), Colina Salon mounted Make-up 101, a one-day seminar-workshop at the Doubletree Hotel Norwalk that was by all accounts a runaway success. Colina Salon was very visible in the community, as a sponsor of the year’s most successful live events so far: Fides Ecclesiae, a musical based on the lives of Saints Pedro Calungsod and Kateri Tekakwitha in February at Pantages Theater; Side A Live at The Grove of Anaheim on April 21; “For Da Laffs,” on June 28 at Alex Theater in Glendale and June 29 at Pala Casino in San Diego; and Stylistics with Peaches & Herb live at Pala Casino-Palomar Starlight Theater on October 5. All these were in no small part to the credit of CEO and founder Marlou Colina, who himself made major inroads into Hollywood this year: styling for the family of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein  at the Oscars, and Hunger Games star Dakota Hood at this spring’s GLAAD Awards. But the humble Marlou gives all the glory to their clients, whose loyal patronage inspires him and his tea to Read More …

Long Beach language policy aids limited-English speakers, including Filipinos

By Hiyasmin QuijanoINQUIRER.net US Bureau 10:30 am | Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 Various groups gather in front of the City Hall of Long Beach to press for a “language access” policy. PHOTO BY JOY PRIM LONG BEACH, California–After two years of campaigning by various organizations for “language access,” the Long Beach city council adopted a language policy to improve immigrants’ access to the city’s services. Long Beach has an estimated 20,000 Filipinos who are among the city’s nearly 250,000 Latino and Asian residents. Long Beach has a population of roughly 500,000. Some 5,000 Filipinos have limited English proficiency (or speak English less than well). The coalition began a phone campaign to push Long Beach officials to release the language access policy draft, knowing that the most common languages spoken in the city are other than English, namely Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog. Long Beach’s adopted language access policy allows room for refinement through quarterly compliance reporting to the city council at public hearings. The broad coalition is made up of Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles; Building Healthy Communities Long Beach; East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice; Housing Long Beach; Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition; Educated Men with Meaningful Messages; Aikona; Filipino Migrant Center; Californians for Justice; United Cambodian Community; and Khmer Girls in Action. “We realized that there was no real promise for language access for Khmer and Tagalog, and we reacted quickly to what these people need,” stated Alex Montances, Filipino Migrant Center staff representative who attended coalition meetings. During citywide budget cuts, Read More …
