SM Cinema in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) will dedicate 8 theaters across the country to screen independent, award-winning films beginning April 2017.

Cine Lokal

FDCP says the project seeks to give indie films a commercial venue while creating an audience.

"Cine Lokal's goal is two-fold: to provide independent filmmakers with a commercial venue for their films, thereby strengthening their experience and training on film marketing and distribution, and to create a culture of support and viewership among Filipinos nationwide,” said FDCP Chairperson Liza Diño.

The largest cinema chain in the country has marked the following 8 theaters to screen Cine Lokal films by April 19:

  • SM Megamall
  • SM North EDSA
  • SM Fairview
  • SM Iloilo
  • SM Southmall
  • SM Cebu
  • SM Bacoor
  • SM Mall of Asia

FDCP has selected Lent-related films for the first screening of Cine Lokal: digitally remastered Nora Aunor starrer “Himala” and Oscar-winner “Spotlight.”

"Iadya Mo Kami" and "Of Sinners and Saints", two films about priests whose faith are tested, will also be screened.

Cine Lokal films are guaranteed a week-long run, with possibilities of a regular screening crossover depending on audience demand.

In the interest of transparency, Diño revealed that a 50-40- 10 split has been worked out between the producers, SM Cinema, and FDCP. The full 50% of the profits will go to the producers, especially if the FDCP is successful in courting local government units to waive the amusement tax for Cine Lokal films. SM Cinemas take 40%, while FDCP receives a minimum 10% for "processing" expenses.

Tickets go on sale at an introductory price of P120 this April, but will eventually increase to P150 to keep the screenings sustainable.

Jasmine hopes to attend Brussels film fest for ‘Puti’

Jasmine Curtis (MNS photo) Coming from the success of her first independent film “Transit,” Jasmine Curtis is honored that another movie of hers is making waves in the international scene. Curtis’ second independent movie “Puti” has been included in the official selection of the 32nd Brussels International Film Festival in Belgium, which will be held on April 8 to 20. But as much as she wants to attend the international festival, Curtis said she might not make it because of she has to shoot another movie. “Gusto ko sana kaso meron din kaming isang movie na gagawin in that timeframe. It’s still in the works. We are still planning and fixing everything but we’ve already met with Regal and we are hoping we will be shooting at around that date na,” she said. Curtis, however, said all is still good even if she doesn’t make it to Brussels. “Hindi pa namin sigurado if we can push the movie back for a bit and attend the Brussels. But otherwise, okay lang naman if we can’t attend because our director will be there for the film ‘Puti,’” she said. Curtis said she is excited to work on her upcoming project with Regal because she likes doing suspense drama films. But before that, Curtis said she first needs to focus on “Dementia,” her big-screen project with veteran actress Nora Aunor. “We are leaving in a week to go to Batanes and we’ll be filming the entire movie there for two weeks.
