OFW inflows up 6.8% to $2 B in Jan

MANILA, Philippines – Remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) went up 6.8 percent in January from a year ago, driven largely by sustained demand for skilled and professional manpower overseas, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported yesterday. Personal remittances – cash and non-cash – amounted to $2.002 billion in January, 6.8 percent higher than last year’s $1.874 billion. “Remittance flows from overseas Filipinos remained resilient, underpinned by the sustained demand for Filipino manpower overseas, particularly skilled workers,” the BSP said. Cash remittances from both land and sea-based workers went up 5.9 percent to $1.799 billion in January from $1.699 billion a year ago. However, the latest cash inflow was 17 percent lower than the $2.173 billion recorded in December as the level of remittances “typically drops” after the holidays, the central bank said. The central bank, citing data from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, said there were 75,348 approved job orders in January of which 32.1 percent or 24,187 were processed. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 The processed job orders were for service, production, and professional, technical, and related jobs in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan, Kuwait, and Qatar. At the same time, the expansion of bank and non-bank remittance service providers abroad supported the growth in remittances. The BSP said remittances from land-based workers increased 4.9 percent to $1.3 billion in January, while those from sea-based workers jumped 9.1 percent to $450 million. “Cash remittances during the month came mostly from the Read More …

2 Pinoys plead innocent in UAE drug case

Dubai Court of First Instance (photo courtesy of www.7daysindubai.co)m MANILA (Mabuhay) – Two Filipinos on Monday pleaded innocent before a United Arab Emirates court on charges that they were trying to sell 0.26 gram of amphetamine. Both Filipinos, aged 33 and 29, were accused by prosecutors of trying to sell the drug for Dh800, UAE news site Gulf News reported late Tuesday. However, the two Filipinos, who were not identified in the report, admitted before the Dubai Court of First Instance that they were taking amphetamine and methamphetamine. Presiding Judge Wajdi Al Menyawi adjourned the case to hear prosecution witnesses on December 19. Prosecutors charged the two with possessing a banned substance for trading purposes and taking amphetamine and methamphetamine. They asked the court to implement a life sentence of 25 years and a maximum fine of Dh200,000. During the court proceeding, an Emirati anti-narcotics police major testified an informant had tipped them off to the two Filipinos. He claimed the two were looking for someone to buy amphetamine for Dh800, prompting police to arrange a sting operation. Following the sting operation, police found the police money in the pocket of one of the Filipinos, who were not identified in the report. Police also seized in their possession a small weighing scale “used by drug peddlers to weigh drugs,” the major added. But a search of the Filipinos’ house did not yield more drugs. The Gulf News report said an Emirati lieutenant has claimed that the two defendants tested positive Read More …

(AP Photo/Pat Roque) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Money sent home by Filipinos who live and work overseas quickened to its fastest pace in seven months last August, fueled by sustained deployment of workers abroad, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said Wednesday. This is the fastest growth rate since January’s revised 8 percent increase, according to central bank records. Total cash transfers grew by 5.9 percent to $14.545 billion in the first eight months of the year, above a Bangko Sentral forecast of 5 percent for 2013. “The steady deployment of OF (overseas Filipino) workers remained one of the key drivers of the growth in remittance flows,”  Bangko Sentral noted in a statement. According to Philippine Overseas Employment Administration data, approved job orders in January to August rose 39 percent annually, primarily in services, production and technical jobs in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Qatar.
