MANILA, Feb 18 (Mabuhay) – Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV on Thursday said it was quite “inconsistent” that the Bible-quoting Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao, who drew flak for relegating gays as “worse than animals,” was included in the senatorial slate of a “thief.”
Pacquiao is running under the opposition ticket of Vice President Jejomar Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance.
“Sa inaaplayan niyang trabaho bilang representative ng mga tao sa Senado, kailangan bukas ang isipan niya sa pagkokonsulta. Although I respect ‘yung kanyang opinyon, ‘yang ganyang sarado ang pag-iisip, nagiging self-righteous pero nandoon naman siya sa slate ng magnanakaw,” Trillanes told reporters in a Senate forum.
(In the position he is applying for as a representative of the people in the Senate, he has to be open-minded for consultation. Although I respect his opinion, his way of thinking makes him self-righteous. On the contrary, he is in the slate of a thief.)
Trillanes, who initiated the Senate probe on corruption allegations against Binay, lamented how Pacquiao had the guts to “judge” other sectors when he turned a blind eye on the supposed wrongdoings of the vice president.
“Hindi naman ako nanghuhusga. Kung magbubulag-bulagan siya eh paano nila masusugpo ang korupsyon,” Trillanes said. “Baka ang tingin niya kay VP Binay anghel unless proven otherwise. Very inconsistent. Jinujustify mo sa isip mo yung ginagawa mong mali.”
(I am not judging here. If he will turned a blind eye, how can they solve corruption? Perhaps he considers VP Binay an angel unless proven otherwise. Very inconsistent. You are justifying in your mind the wrong thing you committeed.)
“Bakit nandoon siya nakadikit sa magnanakaw pero kung manghusga siya ng siya ng ibang sector ganun ganun na lang,” he added.
(Why does he associate himself with a thief? Yet he easily judges members of other sectors.)
Binay, who is seeking the presidency, is being hounded by corruption allegations when he was still Makati mayor, particularly over the construction of the allegedly overpriced Makati parking building.
The world boxing icon earned the ire of netizens and celebrities alike for comparing homosexuals to animals in his stand against same-sex marriage during a television interview. Furthermore, American sports apparel giant Nike dropped Pacquiao as clothing sponsor due to his “abhorrent” statement.
Trillanes said Pacquiao’s remarks were derogatory, adding that he himself would be offended if he was part of the gay community.
“Kaya nagkakagulo dito sa mundo dahil sa mga ganyang pag-iisip. Self-righteous. Makabasa lang ng Bibliya o kung anumang dokumento, ipagdidikdikan na sa kapwa nila na parang ‘kami lang ang tama, kayo mali,’” he said.
(There is disorder in the world due to such way of thinking. It is self-righteous. Just because he has read the Bible or related documents, it seems he is claiming that he is right and others are wrong.)
“Talagang may mga pagkakataon na magkakamali ka sa sasabihin mo. I hope natuto siya sa episode na ‘to,” he added.
(There are really circumstances where you will err in what you say. I hope he learned from this episode.) (MNS)
