Research found out that artists “have structurally different brains compared with non-artists’ and brain scans of the participants revealed that “artists had increased neural matter in areas relating to fine motor movements and visual imagery”.
The research published in NeuroImage, suggests that an artist’s talent “could be innate” and “training and environmental upbringing also play a crucial role in their ability”.
Nature and nurture came to fore in the Belgium-based research with authors reporting of “training and environmental upbringing playing crucial roles in their ability’.
Segue to multi-awarded artists Dr. Ramon Geluz whose artistry embodies the substance of the research. An artist first and a medical doctor and educator, second, Dr. Geluz has a lot of that gray matter inside his skull to be able to excel in both fields.

Dr. Geluz is a medical practitioner by profession who doubles as a consummate artist whose fascination with music blossomed at an early age. He credits his mom, Carmen Tiongson Sison, from whom he learned to play the piano. He also sang as a boy soprano at their local parish church and there was no stopping him from thereon.
Tucked under his belt is a litany of full musical productions, one of which, the first ever Filipino opera “Karim at Jasmin” took two decades before it was finally staged in public that earned for him the accolade and recognition for his genius in the arts.
It was an ambitious project sidelined momentarily by his pursuit of a medical career but deep inside him, his artistic fire was kept aglow by his passion for the music and the arts.
Drawing inspiration from the colorful and rich Muslim culture, the Doctor wrote, rewrote, revised and polished in what would be his first magnum opus that would debut at the Little Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2006 with the world famous Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. A total 34 his original compositions he composed became part of the repertoire.

“Karim at Jasmin” reached the U.S. shores in June of the following years with a gala premiere at the Terrace Theater of the Long Beach Convention Center with art aficionados taking notice of composer’s musical attributes that earned for him awards of excellence in music arts from the United State Congress.
Dr. Geluz also wrote “Tina and the Magic Mirror,” a heartwarming, romantic musical production, a patriotic musical, “The Life and Loves of Dr. Jose Rizal” and the latest from his vast reservoir of musical talent and fertile imagination, “The Life of St. John the Baptist” – “A Voice in the Wilderness” where he intertwined his deep seated romanticism with Biblical realities in the one-and-a-half hour production.. Staged for an encore performance at the St. Louise De Marillac Church in Covina as a fundraising project, the two-act production attracted hordes of the pious and the artistic with dozens of cast members doing justice to Dr. Geluz’s creative genius with their passion and individual musical talents.
