JanElmo: The real thing

Elmo Magalona and Janine Gutierrez (MNS Photo) After long-standing rumors, Elmo Magalona and Janine Gutierrez have finally admitted to being in a relationship. Despite winning her heart, however, Elmo promises to keep wooing Janine. In fact, he is more determined to show how much he cares for her. “I don’t really want her to get bored, so I just keep thinking of things just to keep it fun,” he said during a recent pocket press conference for GMA-7’s “More Than Words.” As such, he invited Janine to join him and his friends in a recent trip to Hong Kong. Janine more than appreciated the gesture, saying that being able to finally visit Disneyland was a “big deal” to her. “Kung hindi dahil sa kanya, hindi ako makakapunta. As in first time kong (mag-Disneyland) so para akong bata… naiiyak-iyak ako dun kasi sobrang pangarap ko siya dati pa,” she shared. Janine related how Elmo influenced her to take her career seriously. “I became more sure of what I wanted when we got close,” she said, adding, “Kasi when I was starting in showbiz, I was just doing it for fun, I just wanted to grab the opportunity. But now I really really want to make the most of everything…” Elmo also helped Janine get rid of her mañana habit. “He has this way of making things happen. Ang problema ko kasi sa sarili ko, I wasn’t so pushy to myself. Eh important ’yun, na you need to motivate yourself and stick Read More …

Trending: squeaky-clean public facilities

Screenshot from PullClean promotional. (Relaxnews) – It’s getting harder for microbes to pass through the doors of hospitals thanks to evolving technology in sanitary gel dispensing. Pure Hold Hygiene Handle was recently featured on the medical equipment blog Medgadget. The device is a simple, “why didn’t I think of this?” door handle that dispenses hand sanitizing gel directly when touched. Above the handle is a refillable reservoir that contains the gel. If you’ve scrubbed up enough at any given moment when you pass through the doors, you can opt for a gel-free opening by pulling on the handle below. It’s recommended for use in food processing plants, healthcare facilities, public restrooms and pharmaceutical facilities. The concept is similar to PullClean, which makes receiving a helping of sanitizing gel an option at the touch of a button. However, Pure Hold reduces the time it takes to sanitize and even the time necessary to make the decision of whether or not to do so.

Toyota is the world’s top car brand

Toyota FCV. ©Toyota Interbrand’s 2014 Best Global Brands rankings, published Thursday, deem the Japanese company the world’s most powerful and valuable car brand and the eighth most important brand across all business categories. The latest rankings, announced on Thursday, are based on three criteria: the financial performance of the branded product or service; how that brand influences consumer choice; and how able the brand is to demand a premium price. All of which gives Toyota a brand value of $42.39 billion, significantly more than Mercedes-Benz, ranked in second place. The third most valuable automobile brand is BMW, with Honda and Volkswagen making up the top 5. It is the tenth year in a row that Toyota has come top in the rankings, and Interbrand puts this sterling performance down in part to its perceived dominance in greener technology. The Prius has become the environmentally friendly personal mobility status symbol of choice among a growing number of motorists, particularly in the USA. The company that has risen the most in this year’s rankings is Audi, now in eight place. The company has had back-to-back record years for sales but it is also capturing people’s imaginations with its very impressive demonstrations of autonomous driving technology. Self-driving cars are generating a huge buzz at the moment, even if they won’t become a reality for some years to come. And Audi is one of the company’s generating the most attention and excitement in this area, boosting its brand. Interbrand claims that this association with Read More …

Aquino urged to release old sick inmates ahead of Natl. Correctional Consciousness Week

President Benigno S. Aquino III greets His Eminence Orlando Cardinal Quevedo following the Thanksgiving Mass in celebration of his elevation to the College of Cardinals at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Quezon Avenue, Cotabato City on Tuesday (March 11). Cardinal Quevedo received his red hat and ring from Pope Francis during a solemn consistory at the St. Peter’s Basilica on February 22, 2014. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – An official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines asked President Benigno Aquino III to grant early releases to incapacitated and sick prisoners for humanitarian reasons. CBCP Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care chairman Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak made the appeal as the country observes National Correctional Consciousness Week from Oct. 20 to 26. “Their families have exhausted all the resources available to them to finance their medical bills,” he said. The CBCP noted the Board of Pardons and Parole oversees 400 visitor-less, indigent, sick and old (VISO) inmates, yet recommended only 40 cases for executive clemency. According to Tumulak, many of the inmates and their families have endured incarceration for several years, especially those who are ailing. He said the prison ministry and its volunteers with its limited resources have provided support for their needs. “More than this problem, the VISO prisoners are longing to be free. They have sought our help on this matter,” he said. Tumulak urged Aquino to grant the plea of the Board of Pardons and Parole for the 40 inmates as a “humanitarian act.” (MNS)

Gov’t lawyers tells Sandigan: Revilla should be in regular jail like Napoles, Gigi Reyes

Senator Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. undergoes booking procedures in Camp Crame on Friday, June 20, after he surrendered to the Sandiganbayan. The anti-graft court manifested that it has taken Revilla into custody because he surrendered, and that there is no need to serve an arrest warrant issued against him. The booking process included a medical examination, and taking his fingerprints and mugshot. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – State prosecutors appealed to the Sandiganbayan to reverse its decision allowing Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. to remain in the police custodial center instead of a regular jail, citing the “successful” incarceration of two other high-profile detainees in the pork barrel scam, including alleged mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles. In their consolidated reply to the comment opposition of Revilla and his co-accused aide Richard Cambe, the prosecutors said the accused could not pose as high-risk detainees who should not be detained in a regular jail because Napoles and another supposed high-risk prisoner Jessica Lucila “Gigi” Reyes are detained in one. Revilla had cited the lack of manpower and capability of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-administered jails to secure him as he faces trial for plunder over the pork barrel scam. The senator had cited the testimony of Sr. Supt. Romeo Vio in the plunder case of his colleague and co-accused Senator Jinggoy Estrada. Vio had said that the BJMP jail in Camp Bagong Diwa is congested and lacks the capability and equipment to secure high-profile detainees. “As to the lack of sufficient Read More …

Urban decay threatens hot PHL economy

By Joel Guinto (BALI, Indonesia) President Benigno S. Aquino III exchanges views with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during the Opening Session the 7th Bali Democracy Forum at the Nusantara Hall II of the Bali International Convention Center on Friday (October 10). The gathering is an annual, intergovernmental forum on the development of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region. (MNS photo) MANILA (AFP) – Manila’s creaking train network means a miserable three-hour work commute for salesman Gerard Galang – just one example of major infrastructure woes that analysts say threaten to cool the Philippines’ red-hot economy. Peak-hour hell comes in many forms in the city of 12 million people, with commuters experiencing a sweaty, stinky crush on dilapidated trains and giant queues to buy tickets. “I pity myself and my fellow commuters but I don’t have any other option than the train,” said Galang, 29, who inhales antiseptic rubbed on to his hands to help negate the stench on the train. “It gets so crowded our faces get pressed against each other and on doors and windows.” Galang spends three hours commuting to work every day, half of which is spent in queues. For other commuters on buses or in cars, daily gridlock worsens to a complete standstill that can trap people for hours when even small rain storms trigger flash floods. The Philippine economy has in recent years shed its reputation as one of Asia’s laggards, with growth of 6.4 percent in the second quarter maintaining its status as the Read More …
