‘Banana Split’ cast invited to wedding, insists Melai

Jason Francisco and Melai Cantiveros (MNS Photo) Soon-to-be newly weds Jason Francisco and Melai Cantiveros cleared the air about the controversy surrounding their wedding and the cast of the ABS-CBN gag show “Banana Split.” It was earlier reported that Angelica Panganiban and other “Banana Split” cast may not be invited to the wedding next month. “Invited talaga sila kaya lang hindi pa na-release ang invitation. Ngayon lang talaga namin na binigay,” said Cantiveros. Cantiveros revealed that Francisco even personally delivered the invitations for the cast of the show to co-host Ryan Bang, who will be the best man at the wedding, and Paul Jake Castillo. “Doon pa talaga nagka-issue sa Banana Split?” Cantiveros asked in disbelief. Cantiveros has been part of the cast since 2011. Cantiveros also said she did get hurt by recent remarks made by her co-hosts. Aside from the issue about the wedding invitation, Pooh, another ‘Banana Split’ regular, allegedly questioned Francisco’s capacity to support his future wife and their forthcoming child. “Actually, sa totoo lang may kaunti akong tampo sa kanila. Kasi parang nagtatampo ako na in-uunderestimate nila si Jason. Siyempre, pag nagmamahalaan, bahala na ang saging, basta loving.” Cantiveros also wished the cast was as truthful and direct as her. “Kung sasabihin niyo ganoon, sa personal na lang sana. Kasi nasaktan talaga yung pamilya ni Jason. Sobra talaga akong na-hurt,” she said. Francisco, the subject of the controversy, expressed his frustration over the topic. “And hindi ko maintindihan eh, lahat naman kami masaya para sa Read More …

OFWs a typhoon lifeline

By Jason Gutierrez A man arranges his peso bills inside a currency exchange shop Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, in Manila, Philippines. The dollar closed Friday at 42.795 pesos, where the peso rose to a new seven-year high on prospects of further U.S. interest rate cuts and likely increases in remittances from Filipinos overseas. (AP Photo/Pat Roque) TACLOBAN  (AFP) – The Philippines’ giant band of overseas workers, already regarded as national heroes for toiling in foreign lands, are coming to the rescue again as they dig deep to send more cash back to their typhoon-hit homeland. With relief workers overwhelmed by the magnitude of this month’s disaster and unable to provide adequate support to the millions of survivors living in flattened towns, Filipinos abroad are proving a crucial, direct lifeline. In the ruined city of Tacloban, farmer Teudolfo Barmisa queued up at a money transfer outlet on Tuesday and withdrew the equivalent of $600 sent by his daughter who works as a maid in Hong Kong. “The money will go to buying food first, then other supplies to help us rebuild our home, like plywood and cement,” Barmisa told AFP. Barmisa was among hundreds of people withdrawing cash from financial outlets in Tacloban, many of which had just re-opened more than a fortnight after Super Typhoon killed at least 5,240 people and destroyed or damaged one million homes. Barmisa’s daughter and the other 10 million Filipinos working abroad are commonly referred to at home as “mga bagong bayani”, or “new heroes”, Read More …

Kathryn: I dream about Daniel most of the time

Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla (MNS Photo) With all her projects, endorsements and a college education to boot, it’s surprising that “Got to Believe” star Kathryn Bernardo still finds time to sleep. But the 17-year old admitted that whenever she does get a chance to doze off, she often finds herself dreaming about her co-star and rumored boyfriend, Daniel Padilla. “Hindi ko na mataandaan ‘yung mga panaginip ko, pero oo naman. Kaso bihira lang ako managinip kasi bihira lang ako matulog. Pero I dream about him most of the time,” she said. Speaking about how Padilla shows his affection, the actress likened her on-screen partner to a baby. “Lalapit sa akin si DJ tapos sasabihin niya, ‘I need comfort.’ Tapos ako naman, ‘Aww. Halika dito,’ then I hug him. Oo, parang baby si DJ,” she added. Bernardo then called Padilla a “mama’s boy” when she was asked whether the actor was closer to his father, actor Rommel Padilla, or mother, actress Karla Estrada. “Mama’s boy. Kay Tito Rommel, makikita mo na father and son talaga ang relationship nila. Kay Tita Karla kasi, ‘pag magkasama sila makikita mo na parang mag-barkada lang sila na nagtatawanan at nagkukulitan.” Bernardo also revealed three things that Padilla can’t live without: his friends, his love for television and his car. “Pwede niyang itapon lahat, ‘wag lang TV. Favorite niya ‘yung ‘Adventure Time.’ Sabi niya, pag natutulog siya, kailangan naka-on ang TV,” she said. Referring to Padilla’s new car, a 2013 Dodge Challenger, Barnardo added, “Feeling Read More …

Ombudsman: No eight-page memo tagging Enrile as ‘pork’ scam mastermind

Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, poses questions to Janet Lim-Napoles, alleged pork barrel scam mastermind during the hearing on Thursday (Nov. 7, 2013) at the Senate building in Pasay City. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales on Thursday denied the existence of an eight-page memo tagging Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile as the mastermind of the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam. “I’m surprised about that eight-page memo. There’s no such thing as an eight-page memo… I have several memos. I don’t recall about an eight-page memo. Pero ang memo na natatanggap ko, more than 200 pages,” Morales told reporters at the sidelines of Senate deliberations on her office’s budget for next year. The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported on Thursday that an investigative team from the Office of the Ombudsman submitted an eight-page report to Morales last week pointing to Enrile as the alleged mastermind in the pork barrel scam. According to the Inquirer report, the memorandum prepared by Assistant Ombudsman Joselito Fangon stated that “all facts point to Senator Enrile as the unseen hand directing the compass and the tempo of the whole orchestra.” Enrile and two of his collegues – Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Bong Revilla – have been named respondents in a plunder complaint filed with the Office of the Ombudsman for allegedly receiving kickbacks from the scam that was allegedly engineered by controversial businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles. Morales said her office has not yet recommended any charges against the lawmakers before the Sandiganbayan anti-graft Read More …

Justice done in Marcos confidante’s conviction: PHL

Beginning in 2009, Vilma Bautista and her two nephews allegedly began trying to sell the Monet water lily, “Le Bassin aux Nympheas,” (shown above) and three other valuable works that the Philippines government was trying to repossess. MANILA  (AFP) – The Philippines said Tuesday that justice was done in the conviction of a confidante of former first lady Imelda Marcos in New York for plotting to sell valuable looted artworks. The special anti-corruption agency tasked with tracing the wealth stolen by the Marcos family said it would now seek to recover the money and artworks confiscated from Vilma Bautista, a former New York-based social secretary of Imelda Marcos. “New York has seen justice done today,” the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) said, as it hailed the US prosecutors for recovering paintings that had been missing since the Marcos family fell from power in 1986. Imelda Marcos, 84, known for her extravagant lifestyle, is alleged to have looted millions from state coffers when her husband Ferdinand Marcos was president from 1965 to 1986. She used this wealth to acquire jewelry, art, real estate and a massive shoe collection. An army-backed popular revolt toppled President Marcos in 1986 and sent him and his family fleeing into exile. But much of their allegedly stolen wealth has not yet been recovered. The PCGG said it had provided key testimony and evidence that led to the conviction of Bautista for conspiring to sell three valuable artworks including a piece by French impressionist Claude Monet. Hong Kong domestic workers treated as ‘slaves’: Amnesty

By Laura Mannering www.amnesty.org HONG KONG (AFP) – Amnesty International on Thursday condemned the “slavery-like” conditions faced by thousands of Indonesian women who work in Hong Kong as domestic staff, accusing authorities of “inexcusable” inaction. Its report, “Exploited for Profit, Failed by Governments”, comes just weeks after a Hong Kong couple were jailed for a shocking string of attacks on their Indonesian housekeeper, including burning her with an iron and beating her with a bike chain. Amnesty found that Indonesians are exploited by recruitment and placement agencies who seize their documents and charge them excessive fees, with false promises of high salaries and good working conditions. The process amounted to trafficking and forced labor, Amnesty said, as the women could not escape once they were in debt and their documents seized. “From the moment the women are tricked into signing up for work in Hong Kong, they are trapped in a cycle of exploitation with cases that amount to modern-day slavery,” said Norma Kang Muico, Asia-Pacific migrants’ rights researcher at Amnesty. She said she feared the problem was widespread in Hong Kong, where some 150,000 Indonesian women work as “domestic helpers”. “A conservative figure would be thousands” based on the research figures and taking into account that the most vulnerable were still kept behind closed doors, she said. The report accuses both Indonesia and Hong Kong of “inexcusable” inaction. “The authorities may point to a raft of national laws that supposedly protect these women but such laws are rarely enforced,” Read More …

FAO: PHL crop damaged by Yolanda worth $110M

Residents of Tacloban City flock to a public market to buy food items as small entrepreneurs begin setting up shop selling fish, bananas, vegetables and other food stuff. (MNS photo) MILAN (Mabuhay) – The typhoon that hit the Philippines has caused crop losses worth $110 million and inflicted damage to the agriculture sector of more than twice that figure, preliminary estimates from the United Nation’s food agency showed on Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time). Some 153,495 hectares (has.) of rice paddy, maize and other high value crops such as coconut, banana, cassava, mango and vegetables have been hit by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which killed at least 3,900 people when it struck on November 8. “High winds, heavy rains and localized floods destroyed houses and infrastructure, including irrigation facilities, and resulted in losses of the main staple rice paddy, sugarcane and coconut crops, as well as livestock, poultry and fisheries,” the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said in a statement. The forecast for damaged areas included some 77,476 has. of rice crops and 20,951 ha of maize crops, it added. The FAO also said that imports of rice are expected to increase by 20 percent next year to 1.2 million tons. Earlier on Tuesday the Philippines’ National Food Authority (NFA) said it will import up to 500,000 tons of rice from its neighboring countries, possibly before the end of the year, as it replenishes stocks that have been depleted by the ongoing typhoon relief efforts. Because of Yolanda and another typhoon which Read More …

Residents, who survived Super Typhoon Haiyan, receive holy communion during Sunday mass inside the Redemptorist Church in Tacloban city, central Philippiness November 17, 2013. Survivors of Typhoon Haiyan flocked to ruined churches on Sunday, kneeling in prayer under torn roofs as the Philippines faced an enormous rebuilding task from the storm that killed at least 3,681 people and displaced 4 million. The Philippines is facing up to an enormous rebuilding task from Typhoon Haiyan, with many isolated communities yet to receive significant aid despite a massive international relief effort.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – After sending 3,000 rosaries, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) through the Episcopal Commission for the Biblical Apostolate (ECBA) will be sending 1,000 copies of Tagalog Bibles to the survivors of typhoon “Yolanda” that ravaged the Central Philippines. Dr. Natividad Pagadut, ECBA executive secretary, said they hope to help those affected in the different dioceses in the Visayas to stand-up again and strengthen their faith by giving them the Bibles. “The distribution of the Bible will hopefully help them to stand up again, to strengthen their faith, and to improve as persons. So it is best to couple it with formation, counseling and to guide them on what to read in the Bible during this time. With this, they will be consoled, challenged, they will gain hope to move on, and get up from this terrible experience,” she said in an article posted on the CBCP news website. Aquino wants ‘weather-proof’ communities to avoid repeat of super typhoon ‘Yolanda’ tragedy

MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno S. Aquino III wants communities redesigned such that they will not be as vulnerable to storm surges and other effects of powerful cyclones like super typhoon “Yolanda” (Haiyan). The President, who was interviewed at the Ormoc City Airport Tuesday, said it pained him to learn of so many deaths because of the effects of Yolanda. “Siyempre gusto natin malaman bakit umabot ng ganoon, mayroon pa ba tayong magagawa? Pwede ba nating ire-design ang communities para mas maging resistant to such things … ‘yung maski sa mamatayan, talagang mabigat sa kalooban ko ‘yun (We want to see if there is something we can do to prevent such a tragedy in the future. Can we redesign our communities to be more resistant to such occurrences? The deaths of so many people have weighed heavily on me),” he said. Yolanda, one of the most powerful cyclones in recent history, barreled through parts of Visayas and Southern Luzon earlier this month. It left more than 3,000 dead in its wake. Since Sunday, the President had been visiting areas in the Visayas that were affected by Yolanda. He returned to Manila Tuesday afternoon. President Aquino said the concerned government agencies are already working on medical attention, power restoration, and helping people get their lives back to normal. Meanwhile, the President said he is returning to Manila to make sure there are enough funds to provide for the needs of those affected. He said he wanted to meet the Cabinet, including Read More …
