PHL deplores Copenhagen shootings

The Philippines on Sunday condemned two shooting incidents in Copenhagen, Denmark that led to the deaths of two civilians and the wounding of five police officers. In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs also sympathized with the families of the victims in the incident. “We deplore the two shooting incidents that killed two civilians and injured a total of five police officers in Copenhagen,” it said. “We sympathize with the families of the victims and support the efforts of the Danish authorities to hold the perpetrator accountable for these reprehensible acts,” it added. It described the first incident, targeted a free speech event at the Copenhagen Cultural Center, as “clearly an attack against freedom of expression.” A Reuters report said police had said they believe a man shot dead by officers was responsible for both shootings. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News

Angara: Suspension of Bangsamoro law hearings gives lawmakers time to reflect

Instead of calling it a setback, Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara sees the temporary suspension in deliberations on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) as a chance for lawmakers to mull the possible impact of the measure. Angara said it is a good thing that the House of Representatives can take a breather from discussing the Bangsamoro bill considering the breakneck speed that the panel created to work on the bill has been holding discussions. “Maganda na ring nagkaroon ng break or tigil dito sa usapin ng BBL dahil parang tren itong BBL na napakabilis. Mga 20 hearing na sa Kamara at tatlo sa Senado. Mabuti nang nagkaroon muna ng tigil sa debate dito para mapag-isipan natin kung talagang gusto nating pasukin ito,” he told dzBB radio in an interview Sunday. Angara is one of the co-authors of the BBL at the Senate. Shortly after the bloody Jan. 25 clash, Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano and Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito withdrew as co-authors of the bill. While stressing he supports the concept of peace “in general,” Angara said efforts to attain it should be balanced with justice, especially in light of the death of 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos during a clash with Moro rebels last Jan. 25.  “Eh sa ngayon parang dehado pa ang estado eh, parang masama pa ang loob, so maghintay-hintay pa tayo. Sana ang MILF naman ay magpakita sila ng [participation] sa trust-building dahil nawala ang tiwala sa kanila eh. Makapagpakita man lang sila Read More …

MILF recruiting members to boost clout in Bangsamoro region – Magdalo lawmaker

Commanders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are aggressively recruiting members in several provinces in Mindanao in an attempt to bolster their clout once the proposed Bangsamoro region is established, a former soldier turned lawmaker has claimed. In an interview over dzBB Sunday, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano said several governors from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) have testified in recent congressional hearings that the MILF is conducting recruitment activities in their areas. Among the provinces where the MILF is recruiting new members according to Alejano are Maguindanao, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga, Sibugay, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-tawi. Based on reports he gathered from sources on the ground, Alejano said MILF commanders are competing among themselves in building up their forces in anticipation of the positions they will secure in the envisioned Bangsamoro parliamentary government. “Mas maraming tao, mas maganda. Nagpaparami sila ng kani-kanilang puwersa para maging mas malawak ang kanilang clout in the future,” he said.  Alarming recruitment The lawmaker, a former Marine captain, said the Moro group is recruiting members under the guise of preparing for the creation of the Bangsamoro police force even though Congress has yet to approve the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL). He described the MILF’s recruitment activities as “very alarming.” “Once na ang BBL ay pumasa, may dahilan na sila (MILF) to conduct training in coordination with the government. But at this point in time, very alarming Read More …

Government on guard against retaliation by Marwan's allies

Security forces are keeping an eye out against security threats, including possible retaliation by allies of Malaysian terrorist and bomb maker Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan who was killed during an operation of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) in Mamasapano town last month, a Palace official said Sunday. According to a report on GMA News’ “24 Oras,” two of Marwan’s students tried to detonate a bomb in Pikit, North Cotabato two days after the SAF reportedly killed Marwan during the Jan. 25 operation.  The elite police commandos went to Mamasapano town in Maguindanao last month to serve arrest warrants on Marwan and Filipino bomb maker Basit Usman. The Federal Bureau of Investigation earlier this month said the DNA sample it received from Philippine authorities showed it came from Marwan. Security forces are hunting down Usman, who managed to escape during a clash between SAF troopers and members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the splinter group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and private armed groups. Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu said Usman was reportedly wounded after the police operation, Read More …

VP Binay not involved in supposed coup plot, UNA says

The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) has defended Vice President Jejomar Binay against rumors he is involved in an alleged attempt to overthrow the Aquino administration, days after Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said unnamed political opposition groups are plotting a coup.  “For the record the VP (vice president) will not be part of any unconstitutional act and has categorically said that he is not in favor of moves asking Aquino to step down. The VP is not supportive for the calls of resignation but, like anyone else, he wants the whole truth to be known by the Filipino people,”  UNA interim president and Navotas City Rep. Tobias “Toby” Tiangco said in a statement Sunday. Binay is UNA’s standard bearer for the 2016 presidential elections. The UNA executive accused Trillanes of using the coup rumors to divert attention from perceived government negligence in planning and executing the anti-terror operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last Jan. 25. “Dina-divert ni Trillanes ang issue upang pagtakpan ang malinaw na kapabayaan ng gobyernong saklolohan ang tropa ng SAF sa Mamasapano. Ano ang intensyon niya kung hindi ilihis ang issue ng negligence on the part of the commander-in-chief,” Tiangco said. He dared the senator to divulge the identities of those allegedly planning against the administration. Citing information he gathered from intelligence sources, Trillanes said last Friday that various groups from the political opposition, the Left, the civil society and the Church are plotting to bring down the Aquino administration following the death of 44 Special Action Force (SAF) Read More …

NUJP dares govt: Solve Bohol radioman’s murder

Extrajudicial killing. Radioman Maurito Lim. By Leo Udtohan As it lamented the death of “yet another colleague,” the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines late Saturday challenged the government to act swiftly to get the killer of Bohol radio commentator Maurito Lim. In a statement, the NUJP challenged the government anew to act swiftly on the death of Maurito Lim, who was gunned down while about to report for work at dyRD in Tagbilaran City. “We have run out of words of condemnation in the face of the murder of yet another colleague,” the NUJP said. “While we seriously doubt demanding justice will get us, or Maurito Lim’s family and colleagues, anywhere, we challenge the government to prove us wrong by acting swiftly to solve the case, arrest the killers and, most important, the mastermind who ordered his death,” it added. The NUJP noted Lim had been hitting hard at local officials linked to the illegal drug trade – lest government “chalk this one up to another ‘non-work related’ death.” The NUJP said Lim was about to alight from his car in front of dyRD before noon Saturday when a motorcycle-riding gunman shot him. Citing initial reports, it said the bullet hit Lim in the left jaw and exited on the other side of his face. Lim was rushed to the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital, but died around 1:15 p.m. “Maurito Lim is the second journalist murdered in Bohol, the 172nd since 1986, and the 31st under the Read More …

Ex-Arroyo official in talks with SAF troopers, Boy Saycon claims

A former Arroyo administration official has met with members of the police Special Action Force to try to convince them to withdraw support for President Benigno Aquino III, a political strategist said. In a report on “24 Oras” aired on Saturday, political strategist and Council of Philippine Affairs secretary-general Pastor “Boy” Saycon said he was at the meeting with some of the elite Philippine National Police troopers who were in a Jan. 25 firefight in Mamasapano, Maguindanao. Saycon did not name the official allegedly meeting with SAF personnel.    He added he was invited to the meeting by former Tarlac Gov. Margarita “Tingting” Cojuangco. Cojuangco has said neither she nor Saycon are part of a rumored destabilization plot against Aquino. “Marami daw nag-iimbita…na mag-withdraw ng support. Sabi ko nga sa kanila, remain in the chain of command. Do not be enticed,” Saycon said. Talk of coup plots have been floating since 44 SAF troopers were killed in a clash with members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, members of the breakaway Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and private armed groups in the Mamasapano area. Also killed in the clash were 18 MILF fighters and seven civilians. On Friday, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV made a vague reference to the “political opposition” as being behind the supposed plot.  “Lahat lahat na, sama sama na lahat ng against kay PNoy,” he said. The Palace said on Thursday that the military is ready to thwart any coup attempt.  Earlier this month, the Department of National Defense Read More …

Palace to MILF: Help us find Usman

Malacañang on Saturday asked the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to help the government track down wanted bomber Basit Usman, who is reportedly wounded and is believed to be hiding in Maguindanao. Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said doing so could be considered a demonstration of the MILF’s sincerity towards the peace process. “(N)i-request po natin sa kanila na help us find si Usman and yun po ang isang ni-request natin sa kanila,” he said on government-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan. On Friday, Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu told dzBB radio that Usman is wounded and is likely hiding in Mamasapano town in Maguindanao.  Usman, with a $1-million bounty on his head, was one of the targets of a Jan. 25 operation in Barangay Tukanalipao in Mamasapano town. The other target, Malaysian bomb maker Zulkifli Bin Hir, also known as Marwan, has been declared dead by the government and the MILF. The operation and the firefight that followed are now the subject of parallel investigations by government agencies and by an MILF panel. The clash left 44 PNP Special Action Force troopers, 18 MILF members, and seven civilians dead. Lacierda said the MILF already showed signs of sincerity when it committed to return the firearms and personal effects of the fallen SAF commandos and when MILF peace panel chairman Mohagher Iqbal appeared before a Senate investigation on the Jan. 25 incident. When asked if the MILF could be a big help in capturing Usman, Lacierda said he would defer to the PNP but Read More …

Palace downplays calls for PNoy resignation due to Mamasapano clash

Malacañang on Saturday downplayed anew calls by some groups for President Benigno Aquino III to resign from office following the Jan. 25 Mamasapano, Maguindanao clash that killed 44 Special Action Force troopers. Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said that while the Palace will respect the sentiments of groups critical of Aquino, it will still wait for the Board of Inquiry findings on the Jan. 25 incident. “I suppose all these are demonstrations of free expression, and it’s something that is respect(ed). Again, we are in the midst of several inquiries. While we respect their choice to express themselves in those manners, we will wait for the results of the Board of Inquiry kasi dapat malaman ang katotohanan,” Lacierda said on government-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan. Lacierda’s statement was in response to a question regarding a group’s plan to hold protests on Feb 22. to call for Aquino’s resignation. At least one group – EDSA dos bente dos Coalition – has threatened to stage protests starting Feb. 22. It hinted at a “nationwide simultaneous event” involving motorcades and an “ecumenical Mass” in Metro Manila on that date. The Jan. 25 incident had triggered an outpouring of sympathy from Filipinos for the slain 44 and their families. It also triggered outrage and calls for accountability. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
