Filipinos are known to be one of the happiest people in the world and we continue to prove it as the Philippines ranks 72nd among 155 countries on the 2017 World Happiness Report.

The Philippines reached high scores in the following happiness index measures:

  • social support area measure (1.254)
  • gross domestic product (GDP) per capita (0.858)
  • freedom to create life choices (0.585)
  • health life expectancy (0.468)
  • generosity (0.194)
  • perceptions of corruption (0.099)

The Philippines climbed 10 notches from its 82 nd place in the 2016 Happiness Index, making it one of the top 20 countries in Changes of Happiness from 2005-2007 to 2014-2016.

In Asia, Singapore is the happiest country, at No. 26 overall, followed by Thailand (32), Taiwan (33), Malaysia (42), Japan (51), Hong Kong (71), Philippines (72), China (79) and Indonesia (81). 

Norway was recognized as the world’s happiest country followed by Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden.

The World Happiness Report annual ranking of 155 countries published by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network under the United Nations defines happiness as “considered to be the proper measure of social progress and the goal of public policy.”

PH wins Best Director, Best Film in Malaysia Int’l Filmfest

The Philippines won two awards at the 2017 Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA), one for renowned Filipino filmmaker Brillante Mendoza who bagged another the Best Director award for his film “Ma’ Rosa,” and a Best Film award for Philippines-Malaysia collaboration film “Singing in Graveyards” which stars Filipino rock legend Joey “Pepe” Smith. Brillante Mendoza Mendoza received his second international best director award for his 2016 film The independent filmmaker earlier received the same recognition during the Gijon International Film Festival in Spain. “Ma’ Rosa” tells the story of a well-liked sari-sari store owner Rosa (Jaclyn Jose) who sells drugs as a side business to meet her family’s daily needs while raising bail for her jailed husband Nestor (Julio Diaz). The same film won for actress Jose the first Best Actress win for the Philippines at the Cannes Film Festival in France. “Singing in Graveyards” was hailed as Best Film at the MGGA. Philippines soars in 2017 global economic freedom ranking

From the 70th place, the Philippines stepped up to the 58th spot in the 2017 Index of Economic Freedom as a result of economic growth and fiscal increases according to US think tank, The Heritage Foundation. Makati The group’s website cited the country’s improvement factors on economic freedom was the country’s remarkable economic expansion influenced “by the economy’s strong export performance and inflows of remittances that have bolstered private consumption.” Philippine economy stretched out by 6.8% in 2016, landing within the government’s 6% to 7% estimated growth range, making the country stay on track as one of the fastest-growing country in Southeast Asia. The Philippines has been on a steady uphill climb in the Washington think tank’s rankings. The growth continued to be essentially influenced by an outpouring in investment and consumer spending, letting the economy to undergo post rapid expansion at a period of weak global demand. The Philippine government’s pursuit to generate wide-reaching job growth was apparent on the runs of legislative reforms to augment the entrepreneurial environment and to advance the status of the private sectors, the report added.
