Designer Pat Santos shares, “When I was thinking of a fabric that has yet to gain mainstream exposure on the market, Neoprene immediately came to my mind. This fabric is great for creating structure and can be for both casual and formal wear.” MANILA, Philippines – Neoprene, a tech fabric that has gained high fashion status as the fabric of choice of some of the world’s design powerhouses — Gucci, Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Zac Posen, Stella McCartney, to name a few — reigned supreme in designer Pat Santos’ latest collection Colors and Mixology, launched in Philippine Fashion Week spring/summer 2015. Taking off from scuba diving gear, Santos made neoprene the ultimate style star in fashion-forward but still wearable pieces composed of tailored tops and bottoms, dresses, and couture gowns set in his choice colors of blue and green. The refreshing, cool vibe of the anthology was complemented by interesting bits of net and mesh, colored and medallion laces, textured sheer fabric, and colored applique. To seal the looks and lend them sophistication, Santos also infused his neoprene-based designs with beads, stones, and Swarovski crystals, which have become the Pat Santos trademark. Santos says, “When I was coming up with this collection, I was thinking of a fabric that has yet to gain mainstream exposure on the market. Neoprene immediately came to my mind. This fabric is great for creating structure and can be for both casual and formal wear.” For inquiries and made to order requests, contact Pat Santos Read More …
Bamboozled: One of Gucci’s Florentine artisans showcases the baffling intricacies of Gucci’s renowned trademark: the bamboo handle. MANILA, Philippines – And now, the in-house monogramming service of Gucci allows for your name, initials or any choice term of endearment to be hand-stamped in your artisanal piece. Nothing tops off an outfit quite like an It bag. With prices reaching six digits while safely secured by monogram hardware, designer bags turn a seeming- ly plain wardrobe into a priceless pièce de résistance. Yet with all the little details to consider, from a designer’s signature to an age-old label’s insignia, the color, the leather, the size, or the quirky moniker, there are times when all that really matters, in the language of eternal style, is the handiwork. For 93-year-old Florentine luxury house Gucci, despite its iconic double-G insignia, the truest mark of a quintessential handbag is its immaculate craftsmanship. Founded in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, who served as an immigrant bellhop in an opulent Parisian hotel, Guccio acquired a penchant for impec- cable luggage that came with his well-heeled guests. Being a native of the same Italian town that produced the masters like Cimabue, Giotto, Donatello, and Brunelleschi, Guccio Gucci established a shop with pure traditional artisanal processes and supreme quality leather as foundations, and built that gilded global atelier we know today. Fast-forward to when industrial processes started to keep up with growing international demand for luxury goods, Gucci, under the tenure of creative director Frida Giannini, remains unfazed by the Read More …

Giampaolo Della Croce, Bulgari’s high jewelry senior director, at the Greenbelt 4 boutique Photos by JUN MENDOZA Ask Bulgari’s resident gem expert Giampaolo Della Croce what precious stone would suit a Filipino woman best, and, without hesitation, he prescribes: “Diamonds.” “Filipinas are just the right height, not too tall and not too petite, so dangling earrings would suit you, and diamonds bring out the color of your skin,” Della Croce says. Bulgari’s elegant senior director of high jewelry notes that, as it happens, Pinays are indeed fond of buying diamonds. We view it as the ultimate status symbol, and haven’t been fully converted yet to the Bulgari gospel of colored stones. That could change, however, with Bulgari’s latest collection Musa, which is possibly the most stunning collection of colored jewels I’ve ever seen. To mark its 130-year anniversary, the Italian jewelry house has released two high-jewelry collections: “Musa” and “Diva,” the latter of which is sure to appeal to Filipinas because it focuses on diamonds. “Both these jewelry collections are a tribute to feminine beauty; as Mr. Bulgari used to say, ‘Women cannot live without aesthetics,’” Della Croce says. Diva pieces feature an iconic fan shape, which he says was inspired by the design of the ancient Roman mosaics that line the walls, floor and ceiling of the Baths of Caracalla. “From a single pendant, embellished by the sparkle of a lot of diamonds, to a garland of precious elements set with diamonds and colored gems, to clusters of Read More …

The brand is named after a childhood character the founder, Jacques Courtin-Clarins, played in a school stage production. He invented himself by inventing Clarins. On Clarins’s signature colors — red, white and gold — recognized worldwide, Jacques said: “From my office on rue Tronchet, I could see a ‘No Entry’ sign. Red catches the eye. If I wanted to get noticed, red was my color. Okay, let’s go with red. Then there’s white, simply because everyone associates it with the medical world, with rigor, purity and efficacy…and a touch of gold for luxury.” Sixty years on, Clarins continues to be ever-present and relevant. Whatever Clarins does, it does with a pioneering spirit, armed with its curiosity, its approach to science and its respect for others. That is why Clarins is unique. ICS board members are led by Tang Singson, president and Libet Virata, chair. Co-founders Kara Alikpala, Crisan Celdran and Bet Lazatin pose with members and supporters during their pledge of commitment. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated worldwide in October. Here, it and began very appropriately with two events connected to the ICanServe Foundation, an advocacy group of breast cancer survivors founded in 1999 by Kara Magsanoc Alikpala, Crisann Celdran, Bet Lazatin and Becky Fuentes. From this group of four young ladies reaching out to cancer survivors in need, it has now grown to approximately 400 women that consists of an e-group forum of over 300 members plus more than 100 ICS volunteers, advocates and supporters. “When we started, we just wanted to help those undergoing treatment. As simple as accompanying the patient to the hospital for chemotherapy or lending wigs and bandannas,” recalls co-founder Kara, head of the Foundation’s Advocacy Committee. For this year’s dual celebrations, I was invited by two dear friends who are breast cancer survivors, Bettina Osmeña and Libet Virata. The American Women’s Club of the Philippines (AWCP) chose ICanServe as the beneficiary of its 20th annual Great American Hoedown held at the Grand Marriott Hotel. Members and guests showed up in cowboy/girl gear complete with an electric bull for those who were brave enough to mount it. A few evenings later, the Raffles and Fairmont Hotel Ballroom generously hosted the 15th anniversary celebration with over 300 members of the ICanServe community including volunteers, partners and beneficiaries in attendance. Lifestyle Asia editor in chief Anna Sobrepeña with chefs Robert Bolanos, Dedet dela Fuente, Jordy Navarra, JP Anglo and Margarita Fores Lifestyle Asia celebrated its 27th anniversary at the Ballroom of Raffles and Fairmont Makati with the theme “Spreading the Table,” which featured the best of Philippine cuisine as prepared by five of the country’s top chefs: Margarita “Gaita” Fores, Dedet dela Fuente, Jordy Navarra, JP Anglo and Robert Bolanos. It was a feast of the senses as the Mandaluyong Children’s Choir sang Ama Namin as thanksgiving before the banquet began, while a lively rigodon de honor was presented while guests enjoyed their dessert. A Filipino-inspired menu was impeccably prepared and paired with wines. We just couldn’t get enough of Gaita’s Philippine Sea Panuelos and Dedet’s popular Lechon Truffle. The rigodon de honor featured diplomat couples Ivo and Gracita Seiber, Massimo and Agnes Roscigno, Louie and Mellie Ablaza. They were joined by Joseph and Stephanie Tay, Freddie and Jo Borromeo, Paqui and Lilibeth Campos, Rene and Ann Puno, Rikki and Beng Dee, Carlo and Cat Antonio, Nes Jardin and Anna Sobrepeña, Mario Katigbak and Nympha Valencia, Mike Toledo and Tina Jacinto, Cristalle Henares and Javi Martinez, Jaime Laya and Dina Tantoco. It only took them one to two rehearsals to master the rigodon that was choreographed by Bujing Danao and Dalah Pia. The elegant black-tie affair proved that charity and celebration go hand in hand with the presentation of two causes close to the publication’s heart: Filipino flavors that champion and support our local produce and farmers, and typhoon Haiyan’s rehabilitation efforts.
