Wear the scent of high society … literally

Celebrating Happiness: Philippine STAR Lifestyle columnist Mons Romulo hosts “The Downy #Instaswitch Experience” in her home with a sunny yellow motif. Photos by BOY SANTOS Fabric-conditioner brand Downy invited a gallery of high-society ladies to explore a new product that samples the world of artisan scents and infuses its glamour into a fashion necessity. Having been a fashion reporter for quite some time, I’ve often found myself at luxe events, reporting on what the rich wear, what they say, what they do. But one question has long tantalized me: what does high society smell like? My other passion, it’s no secret to some, is perfume and the various layers and notes that make up complex scents. It’s a billion-dollar industry that employs science and art to craft the most intriguing olfactory experiences. At a recent event, “The Downy #Instaswitch Experience,” I got a chance to combine these two interests, as fabric-conditioner brand Downy invited a gallery of high-society ladies to explore a new product that samples the world of artisan scents and infuses its glamour into a household necessity. Philippine STAR lifestyle columnist Mons Romulo welcomed us into her beautiful home, where the atmosphere was distinctly sunny and cheery thanks to the fresh yellow flower arrangements and table accents arrayed everywhere. Everything was incredibly tasteful, from the soft music to the gleaming table settings. Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: Mons’ guests started arriving. The high-powered list included Regal Films CEO Roselle Monteverde Teo, daughter of Mother Read More …

Draw your own eyebrow

Happy eyebrows: Happy Skin’s Eye Love View Eyebrow Duo is an easy favorite beauty find —  it’s got an eyebrow pencil tip on one end and a liner tip on the other.    Dear Lucy, I do not have eyebrows, and I am not even remotely considering getting it tattooed in any way.  I have turned to using a pencil, but it looks so unnatural! Can you suggest anything that will work? Tania I asked some makeup experts, as well as friends I know who have the same dilemma as yours and this is what they have to say:  Pencil can work, if it is the right one, and another good option would be powder.  If your problem is sparse eyebrows, then they say it may be best to go for powder, which can be more easily dispersed and will not give you a look that seems painted on.  Bear in mind the color of the powder, make sure it matches your hair color.  Laura Mercier has some brow powder duos that you can choose from, and is best applied with a stiff angled brush.  Use short, feathered strokes.  To set the look, mist an eyebrow brush with hairspray and brush it through. Happy Skin’s Eye Love View Eyebrow Duo has become a quick and easy favorite beauty find for many.  It has an eyebrow pencil tip on one end and a liner tip on the other.  The former makes application of color easy (and it is in a very Read More …

Fashion meets function in Herve Chapelier

Patty Laurel Filart and Angel Jacob are happy with their Herve Chapelier bags. As my daughter Natalia and I were window shopping at SM Aura,  she spotted a store that I wasn’t too familiar with. Excitedly she explained that it was one of her favorite bag stores when she lived in Paris and was happy that it is now available locally. The Herve Chapelier brand is named after its French founder who, in 1976, started with tote, duffel and travel bags made with sturdy materials that are usually found in car seat belts and canvas in red, purple, fuchsia, orange, yellow and neutral hues.  Popular with the younger set and those who want practical bags, the brand is also favored for its simplicity and durability.  A week later, I was invited to the opening of  Herve Chapelier and one of the guests even jokingly remarked that her bag has outlasted her decade-old marriage. Guests Stephanie Kienle-Gonzales,  Maggie Wilson, Pia Magalona, G Tongi, Anna Rufino, Patty Laurel, Mika Martinez, Keri Zamora and Karen Jimeno agreed that these bags are the best not only for travel but also for daily use. They showed us their choices that looked so chic in various color combinations, including animal prints which are always in style. The evening’s Parisian-themed soiree had romantic French music in the background as French goodies were served.  Guests were able to view the bag artwork created by selected young and upcoming local artists Aiya Balingit, Mayi Peñaflorida, Soleil Ignacio, Niccolo Jose, Kris Abrigo, and Tokwa Peñaflorida who each Read More …

State-of-the-art skincare at Festival Supermall

MANILA, Philippines – Regenesis The Face and Body Boutique promises to bring to the South the benefits of healthy skin as it opens its latest branch at Festival Supermall in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. Regenesis is a skin and body clinic that offers some of the most advanced, state-of-the-art treatments and services to revitalize face and body. Owner Dr. Angela Gomez, an aesthetic medicine specialist who trained in Switzerland and the US, got interested in aesthetic medicine because of her exposure to children with skin diseases during her residency days. “I was getting a lot of young patients with skin diseases, so I decided to study about the skin, as well. I attended a lot of dermatology seminars and conventions. Of course, that also included aesthetic dermatology. The fast-evolving field of aesthetic medicine inspires me to keep up with only the latest,’’ Dr. Gomez says. Regenesis focuses on enhancing natural beauty rather than changing the face completely. “What we go for in Regenesis is to enhance what’s already there. This is why we don’t have any cosmetic surgery procedures on our services menu,” she expounds. “We want things to look natural.” One of their most popular treatments is the platelet-rich plasma treatment, wherein blood plasma is taken from a customer and re-injected onto the face as a natural filler. Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: “The plasma stimulates the growth and renewal of collagen and lessens fine lines. It also improves skin texture and tone,” explains Dr. Gomez. Read More …

Smart solutions for dry, brittle hair

Rx for colored hair: Tresemmé’s Keratin Smooth line has a shine spray that incorporates heat/UV protection. HI, REGINA! I use conditioner, but my hair still feels brittle and dry afterwards. What’s going on?                                                       ALLIE Is your hair colored? Because coloring — especially when there is bleach involved — sucks the life out of hair. (And hair is already dead to begin with!) I just got a dye job fairly recently, too, and my hair’s texture now is a lot drier and more damaged than it was when it was still virgin black, so I’m taking extra good care of it with the right products. If your hair is colored, too, you should be using hair products specifically designed for colored hair. They’re typically made with gentler ingredients so that they don’t strip color, and most of the time, they have components that help nourish dry, damaged hair. They also don’t include ingredients (like sulfates) that fade your color. I’m currently going through Pureology’s Pure Volume shampoo and conditioner; the brand’s specifically designed to maintain colored hair. If your hair’s not colored, do you heat-style a lot? You need to be using a heat- and/or UV-protecting product if you frequently use a flat iron or curling iron. (Tresemmé’s Keratin line has a shine spray that incorporates heat/UV protection.) If you blow-dry daily, don’t blow-dry straight out of the shower. Towel-dry first, then air-dry, and only when it’s just a little damp and mostly dry should you hit it with the blow Read More …

SM Woman launched in a powerful show

SM Woman the label takes a beautiful bow during Fashion Week. Photos by JOEY MENDOZA MANILA, Philippines – The show was all about branding — putting together several fashion labels of SM Store into just one label — SM Woman. And it was beautifully and powerfully done. Put together by  Fashion Week director Joey Espino and SM designer Tonichi Nocom, the show was refreshingly awesome, as it was done on a two-level stage using a mix of hydraulics and playful videos. Never a lull in the fast-paced and well-curated show that showed all-wearable clothes from casual to resort to career to evening wear. There were stylish basics with interesting twists, playful beachwear that can be mix-matched for city wear, clothes for the boardroom and after-office events, and modern cocktail ensembles and evening gowns. What made a lot of sense was that the clothes were for sale on racks, in the lobby right outside the SMX exhibition hall. People were buying like mad. The SM Store (another case of rebranding) is now amazing us with non-stop innovations,  bringing a sense of freshness and newness to this department store that has  for decades been so on the move and constantly evolving, we have forgotten that it started as a shoe store. SM is moving fast with more surprises. And to think we are still busy exploring SM Aura. And we are still excited about the new and wonderful SM Mega Fashion Hall.  —M.M.M.

Final toast to Kipling’s

Kipling’s has been around since 1999  and was always considered the best in town.   Many followed suit,  copying its formula, but failed along the way.  However,  all good things must end, and this favorite watering hole for connoisseurs finally bid goodbye to its loyal customers. Kipling’s soul was in the person of  Scottish-born managing directress Barbara Cumagun.   She made sure that patrons and friends would be able to share not only a glass of their favorite single malt whiskey or a couple of puffs of the best Cuban cigars but that there were numerous friendships that  bloomed and endured for all the years that Kipling was alive.   Charity events made this famed bar stand out because of the huge number of recipients who greatly benefited from the generosity of their clientele. The latest was when typhoon Yolanda hit fisherfolk  in the Visayas, who lost not only their livelihood but their precious boats, too. Kipling’s came to the rescue by immediately raising funds for 20 motorized bancas, financial assistance for rebuilding homes  and 40,000 nutritious food packs for victims in the devastated area.  If you see boats floating in that region named after exotic whiskies, you now know where they came from. As Barbara was called onstage, Captain’s Bar was quiet as she bade adieu, “Clients — that’s how you all started off, but after 15 years, you have become much more. The friendships that have been forged, the camaraderie we have shared is priceless.  Ups and downs, good and bad Read More …
