Plunder trial of Napoles, Reyes begins

Janet Lim Napoles arrives at the Senate for the Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on the alleged P10 billion Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam, which reportedly involves her group and several legislators. (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – The plunder trial of alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles and Gigi Reyes began Wednesday at the Sandiganbayan, with Napoles’ property custodian first to testify. The two women’s plunder case on their alleged involvement in Senator Juan Ponce Enrile’s alleged P172 million kickbacks is the first pork barrel case to move on to the trial phase since the scandal broke out in 2013. Marina Sula, property custodian of Janet Lim Napoles Corporation who became president of Masaganang Ani Para sa Magsasaka Foundation Inc. (MAMFI), was the first witness to testify in the trial. In Wednesday’s hearing, Sula narrated how she helped Napoles come up with names of fake non-government organizations (NGOs) used in funneling money from lawmakers’ pork barrel. She said Napoles instructed her and another employee, Merlina Sunas, to produce a list of possible names of NGOs. She claimed to have registered at least 20 fake NGOs at the Securities and Exchanges Commission, and opened bank accounts for each organization. During the direct examination, Sula identified the incorporators of the NGOs involved in Enrile’s case as house helpers and drivers of Napoles, while two are relatives of Sunas who had no knowledge that they would be registered as NGO officials. It was also mentioned in the hearing that Napoles had Read More …

Carla Abellana makes appeal for caged animals

Carla Abellana (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – If it were up to Carla Abellana, she wants zoos proven unable to properly care for the caged animals shut down. In reposting on her Instagram account the blog entry of WhenInManila.com published December last year titled “Open Letter to Manila Zoo: It’s Not a Zoological Garden, It’s an Animal Prison,” she said, “I believe it’s best if they just close down Manila Zoo and even Malabon Zoo, quite honestly.” In the blog entry, an anonymous Manila Zoo visitor shared his experience while visiting the decades-old site, alleging the animals there were eating rubbish including plastic containers. The blogger also deemed the animals were housed in filthy cages. “These animals deserve to be in much better sanctuaries,” Carla said. “I wouldn’t like to think they should be released in their true homes because either they’d be helpless in surviving on their own (because they were raised in captivity), hunted down and killed, or both.” Carla urged to have the animals transferred to sanctuaries “such as the one in Calauit.” It was reported last year that Manila Zoo would undergo a major facelift as part of a joint venture agreement between the Manila local government and local developer Metropolitan Zoo and Botanical Park, Inc., the latter providing a P1.5 billion budget for the improvement of the 5.5-hectare zoo. The reconstruction promises improvement in animal facilities as well as establishment of shops offering food, refreshments, retail shops and the like. It is known to many Read More …

No credible terrorist threat in the country: Aquino

President Benigno S. Aquino III delivers his speech during the 2016 East-West Center (EWC) / East-West Center Association (EWCA) International Conference at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel in One Rizal Park, Manila City on Friday (January 15). (MNS photo) MANILA  (Mabuhay) – No credible threat has been monitored in the country despite the recent terror attacks in Jakarta, Indonesia, President Aquino assured the public on Friday. The President, however, said the government would remain vigilant and continue to boost intelligence sharing with other regional allies to thwart any security threat as well as prevent radicalization of persons who become threats to peace and order. Target-hardening efforts across the country will also be sustained to keep the country safe from lawless elements, according to the President. “The last report I read says there is no credible threat,” the President said in a press conference during a visit in the province of Bulacan. “Is there a general threat? Yes. We are not immune to extremism but all our agencies, law enforcement and intelligence, are focused on this problem and trying to thwart potential problems,” added Aquino who met with top security officials last Thursday shortly after the attacks in Indonesia. Aquino admitted that authorities have monitored two Filipinos, one living in Saudi Arabia and the other in Lebanon, who attempted to join a group of Islamic militants. These two half-Filipinos, however, never lived in the country, he said. “Now, having said that, we have a big population in Middle East, Read More …

PHL seeks joint patrols with US in South China Sea

Philippine Navy Rear Admiral Leopoldo Alano (right) shares a light moment with U.S. Navy Rear Admiral William Merz during the opening ceremony on Monday of the joint exercise between the two countries’ navies in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, the nearest province in the disputed Spratly Islands. (MNS photo) Manila, Philippines | AFP |   – The Philippines has called for joint patrols with the United States in the disputed South China Sea, where Manila has festering territorial dispute with Beijing, a defence department spokesman said Thursday. The remarks came after the Philippine’s Supreme Court upheld a 10-year security agreement opening the door for the US to operate more troops and equipment out of the Southeast Asian archipelago. “There is a need for more collaborative presence in the South China Sea. Thus, in addition to freedom of navigation operations of the US, we are also suggesting that we patrol the area together,” spokesman Peter Paul Galvez told reporters. Galvez did not specify where in the South China Sea the joint patrols would be conducted. China has conflicting territorial claims with the Philippines in the waters, as well as Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam. While the United States does not support any of the claims, it has warned China against trying to restrict air and sea passage through the Sea – a major shipping lane, rich fishing ground and potential source of mineral resources. Tensions flared last month when the US flew two B-52 bombers close to flashpoint islands that have been artificially built up by China, reportedly Read More …
