Getting physical with Derrick Monasterio

Derrick Monasterio (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) — Actor Derrick Monasterio has made the transition from teen star to more mature actor. With it comes a physical transformation that is nothing to scoff at. The 20-year-old Kapuso heartthrob has been making heads turn with his chiseled physique, a result of persistent hard work. Derrick also modified his diet to achieve his form. “I avoided fatty foods, hindi ako nagle-lechon. Chicken lang na walang balat tsaka isda,” he shared. The gambit has paid off. During his participation at the Cosmopolitan Carnival – formerly the Cosmo Bachelor Bash – recently at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds, Derrick’s appearance elicited loud screams from the women in the audience. “Matagal po (akong nag-prepare), mga four months,” the young heartthrob said. “’Tsaka kung dati siguro once a week lang akong pumupunta sa gym, ngayon, ‘nung nalaman ko na kasali ako mga thrice a week na po siguro.” Showing less skin than some model and celebrity participants that took the ramp, Derrick explained, “Hindi mo kailangang magpasilip para maging hot ka eh. Kahit nga naka-sando lang kaya ko silang talbugan eh.” He added, “’Tsaka bata pa ako eh. Siguro next time ’yung ganun kapag medyo veteran na ako sa showbiz. ’Yung mala-Jay Manalo na, (mala-)Tom Rodriguez.” To add to Derrick’s roster of calorie-burning activities, he says he is also trying his hand at dancing. “(Pero) kailangan pang pakuluan ’yung katawan ko, matigas pa eh,” he joked. “But for a change nga po sana, gusto kong Read More …

Sitting no worse for health than standing: UK study

A British study investigated whether there were any benefits of standing at work over sitting.©carlosseller/shutterstock.com (London, United Kingdom–AFP) – Sitting down is no worse for you than standing up as long as you take regular exercise, a British study said Monday, casting doubt on the health benefits of sit-stand work stations. The study also challenged advice from the UK National Health Service (NHS) based on other studies stating that “remaining seated for too long is bad for your health, regardless of how much exercise you do.” Exeter University and University College London researchers followed more than 5,000 people over a 16-year period and their findings were published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. “Any stationary posture where energy expenditure is low may be detrimental to health, be it sitting or standing,” said Melvyn Hillsdon from Exeter’s sport and health sciences department. “The results cast doubt on the benefits of sit-stand work stations, which employers are increasingly providing to promote healthy working environments.” The research found there was no influence on mortality risk for participants from sitting at work, during leisure time or watching television. The NHS said on its website in advice published last year that there was “increasing evidence” linking excessive sitting with being obese, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and premature death. It recommends an active break from sitting every 30 minutes, citing expert Professor Stuart Biddle saying: “Sitting needs breaking up.” “Do some tasks standing, like having coffee and chats, or even writing a letter –- Ernest Hemingway Read More …
