Janet Lim Napoles (center), the alleged pork barrel scam queen, is escorted out of the court room after being found guilty on her kidnapping and serious illegal detention case of scam whistleblower Benhur Luy at the Makati Regional Trial Court on Tuesday. Napoles was sentenced to permanent imprisonment. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) -– The Sandiganbayan has ordered the arrest of a former employee of alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles. The Sandiganbayan’s First Division, which handles the plunder and graft cases of Senator Ramon Revilla Jr., ordered the arrest of Laarni Uy due to her failure to attend her arraignment. Sandiganbayan Associate Justice Efren Dela Cruz also ordered the cancelation of Uy’s bail. Uy was supposed to undergo arraignment last April 8, but this did not push through because of her absence. She also did not send any lawyer. The pork barrel scam involves the allocation of lawmakers’ priority development assistance funds to bogus non-government organizations set up by Mrs. Napoles. Whistle-blowers earlier said congressmen and senators could get as much as 50% in kickbacks for all pork barrel funds allocated to Napoles NGOs. Napoles and the concerned lawmakers have denied the allegations. (MNS)

Before winning the Sarbay triathlon, he had already conquered five big triathlon events as recently placing 5th in the 2015 Place Challenge Philippines, and four major events in 2014 GUMASA, Sarangani – The 2nd SarBay Swim-Bike-Run for the Environment triathlon tested the gears and grits of every participant as the course was designed to be more challenging this year. Early morning on May 16, 65 triathletes answered the gun start at the white sand shore of Gumasa, Glan for the highly-anticipated triathlon organized by the provincial government and Smart Communications. There were alterations to the usual route of the triathlon this year making the race more challenging. However, 36 veteran triathletes were undaunted. They registered in the standard or Olympic distance which included a 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike, and 10-km run or a total of 51.5-km. Those new in the world of triathlon registered in the sprint category. It is half the distance to be traversed in the Olympic set. 100-day countdown to launch of cleanest-ever Euro-6 vehicles©SMMT (Relaxnews) – The toughest ever standards for vehicle exhaust emissions are just 100 days away from coming into force Europe-wide. From September 1, all new petrol and diesel-powered cars sold within the European Union will have to produce significantly less carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and a host of other air pollutants if they’re to be deemed Euro-6 compliant. The legislation has given carmakers a headache in that they have had to plumb the depths of their imagination and technical capabilities in order to improve their diesel engines to meet the targets. However, their challenge is everyone else’s good fortune. As the cleanest vehicles in history start rolling out onto European roads, air quality is set to improve measurably. Data published by the EU in April shows that the pollution emitted by the average new car has fallen by almost one third since it started imposing emissions restrictions with Euro-1 in 1993, but a jump is expected with the move to Euro-6 regulations as they specifically target diesel cars and their generation of nitrogen oxide (NOx), a gas linked to health issues as well as climate change. From September, a new car’s diesel engine cannot emit more than 80 mg/km of NOx and 5mg/km of particulate matter (PM), a huge jump over the outgoing Euro-5 standard, introduced in 2011, which permitted NOx emissions from diesels of 180mg/km. Roughly half of all new cars currently on sale in Europe already comply with Euro-6 regulations Read More …

Researchers have identified a fast heart rate as a possible risk factor for diabetes.© haveseen/shutterstock.com (Relaxnews) – Researchers from the US and China have found an association between resting heart rate and diabetes that could help identify those with a higher future risk for the disease. In a study of 73,357 Chinese adults, they found that faster heart rates were associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes, as well as impaired fasting glucose levels. More precisely, according to study senior author Xiang Gao of Penn State University, “Each additional 10 beats per minute was associated with 23 percent increased risk of diabetes, similar to the effects of a 3 kilogram per meter square increase in body mass index.” They then combined their results with those of seven previous studies and found that those with a fast heart rate had a 59 percent increased risk of diabetes comaped to those with a slow heart rate. The results were published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. kc/cm

Supporters rally outside the Indonesian Embassy in Makati City on Friday appealing for clemency for Filipino Mary Jane Veloso, convicted of drug trafficking in Indonesia. Veloso has been moved to an island prison and is awaiting final word on her execution from Indonesian authorities. (MNS Photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Mary Jane Veloso is innocent. This is the claim of Veloso’s alleged illegal recruiter, Maria Kristina Sergio, in a 31-page counter-affidavit that will form part of her defense on human trafficking, illegal recruitment and estafa charges pending with the Department of Justice (DOJ). While Sergio denied being part of an international drug syndicate behind the 2.6 kilograms of heroin seized from Veloso by Indonesian authorities in 2010 that eventually led to the death sentence meted on Veloso for drug trafficking, she stressed that Veloso knew nothing about the contraband. Interior Secretary Mar Roxas (center) receives the Board of Inquiry (BOI) report on the Mamasapano incident from Philippine National Police OIC Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina (right) and Director Benjamin Magalong, the BOI chairman, on Friday. The report was immediately made public. (MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – An administration ally on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II sliding down to a vice presidential candidate in the 2016 elections, saying it is only part of a plan to demolish his possible presidential bid. Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone said talk of Roxas settling for a vice presidential run was part of his opponents’ ploy to portray him as a “weak” presidential candidate. “His detractors want to convince the voters to shun a ‘non-winner,’” he said in a text message. Evardone, however, said questions about Roxas’ competence can easily be resolved by examining his track record as a public official. “[He is] an incorruptible leader,” he said. Talk about Roxas sliding down to run for vice president surfaced after the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that some Liberal Party stalwarts were pushing for a Poe-Roxas tandem in the 2016 elections. Another Inquirer report quoted Budget Secretary Florencio Abad as saying that the ruling party was open to a number of possibilities “considering the unpredictable nature of Philippine presidential politics.” The report indicated that the possibilities included a Poe-Roxas tandem. Roxas has long been touted as the LP’s presumptive presidential candidate even though he has yet to announce Read More …
