Chinese reclamation in Spratlys violates Asean conduct declaration – DND

By Bong Lozada INQUIRER.net 9:11 pm | Thursday, June 5th, 2014 MANILA, Philippines-With China continuing its reclamation projects in the disputed Spratly Islands, the Philippines has fired back saying the operations are an “outright disregard” of one international relation. Peter Paul Galvez, Department of National Defense spokesman, said that the reclamation projects of the Chinese at the Gaven and Cuarteron reefs disregard the Declaration of Conduct that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations formed. “This is an outright disregard of the DOC,” Galvez said Thursday evening. “We continue to reiterate that all nations in the region (to follow the DOC). Galvez said that the Philippines continues to “aggressively pursue the code of conduct.” China’s reclamation operations began in March at the Cuarteron reef and May at the Gaven reef. According to the Asean DOC, Asean countries and China should “promote a peaceful, friendly, and harmonious environment in the South China Sea.” Galvez said that apart from sparking new tensions, the “illegal activities” also disrupt the environment. “These actions, these activities destroy the marine environment which sustains the marine life in the waters.” Follow Us Other Stories: South Korea gives Corvette to Philippine Navy G7 concerned by Asian maritime tensions Vietnam shows video of Chinese ship ramming boat Recent Stories: Complete stories on our Digital Edition newsstand for tablets, netbooks and mobile phones; 14-issue free trial. Ed Sheeran writes song for The Fault in Our Stars

Sheeran has won Brits, been nominated for the Grammys, toured with Taylor Swift and others, and is now selling out concerts all over the world Great love stories in the movies also produce great theme songs. This was true of As Time Goes By from Casablanca back in the ’30s, also of Love Story and Where Do I Begin, Breakfast at Tiffany’s Moon River, The Way We Were, Superman’s Can You Read My Mind, Somewhere in Time and so on down to recent times with My Heart Will Go On from Titanic.  Now Titanic happened 17 years ago and while there has been no shortage of good music from the movies, we still have to come across a theme of the same tremendous impact as My Heart Will Go On. It must be because times have changed and films are not that romantic anymore. Also because film producers have discovered the marketing boost that old songs provide. Think of She in Notting Hill. This is sad but maybe Ed Sheeran and All Of The Stars from The Fault in Our Stars can change the situation. The Fault in Our Stars is based on a best-selling book by John Green about two cancer stricken teenagers. Bright, attractive, very smart and with a uniquely humorous view of the world around them, Hazel Grace and Augustus meet and fall in love while attending a cancer support group. The story does not deal with changing the inevitable, it is instead about how these young Read More …

Remembering the art & life of Lino Brocka

National Artist for Film Lino is known for directing films such as Bona, Wanted: Perfect Mother and Jaguar     MANILA, Philippines – Last month was the 23rd death anniversary of filmmaker and National Artist for Film Lino Brocka who died in a car accident on May 21, 1991. Film lovers are lucky that the cable channel, Cinema One, continues to show some of his classic films, among them, Ina, Kapatid, Anak which showed actors Lolita Rodriguez and Charito Solis at their best. The parting scene between sisters had a quiet Solis looking at Rodriguez from the window. That scene was so taut and illuminating it bagged for Solis the Best Actress award over her closest competitor, Rodriguez. On the other hand, Brocka’s 1970 film, Wanted: Perfect Mother, was a virtual nostalgia trip as we saw today’s adult stars in their rare childhood roles namely Snooky Serna, Gina Alajar and Arnold Gamboa, among others. Of course, we saw a younger version of Caridad Sanchez and Mary Walter and the rare appearance of the emcee for all seasons, Eddie Mercado. The film had a virginal Boots Anson-Roa paired with the once young and dashing Dante Rivero. Indeed, today’s cineastes can have the best of Brocka not just on cable channel but on YouTube as well. We were able to savor Tubog Sa Ginto, which was a far more engrossing movie than the hit teleserye, My Husband’s Lover. Here, you see a young Eddie Garcia making it with the younger Mario O’Hara to the shock of Read More …

Seized counterfeit goods surge 334% in Jan-Apr

MANILA, Philippines – Counterfeit items seized by the government surged 334 percent in the January to April period compared to the same period a year ago, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) said. Data from the IPOPHL showed counterfeit goods confiscated by the government amounted to P6.572 billion as of end-April, well-above the P1.515 billion in the same period last year. The IPOPHL attributed the higher amount to operations of the IP rights enforcement agencies particularly the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC). “The same joint NBI-BOC operations yielded the increases,” IPOPHL director general Ricardo Blancaflor said in a text message yesterday. For the rest of the year, the IPOPHL is upbeat the value of seized pirated or counterfeit items would continue to rise. “The operations will continue at present levels,” he said. Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 “There will be more joint cooperations,” he added. Aside from the NBI and BOC, other agencies part of the National Committee on IP Rights (NCIPR) which is authorize to visit business establishments with IP violations and confiscate counterfeit items are the Philippine National Police, Optical Media Board and Food and Drug Administration. Blancaflor is confident the value of goods seized by the NCIPR this year could beat last year’s total of P7.76 billion. He is also hopeful this year’s total could match the record-high set in 2011. Counterfeit items seized by the government reached an all-time high of P8.3 billion in Read More …
