Alice: I’ve loved, lost & learned

MANILA, Philippines – Alice Dixson can very well relate to her character in When The Love is Gone because she has “loved and lost.” Alice is Audrey, who is fighting to save her troubled marriage for the sake of her daughter’s happiness, in the Viva Films retitled remake of Nagalit ang Buwan sa Haba ng Gabi, the 1983 blockbuster melodrama directed by Danny Zialcita. Opening in theaters on Nov. 27, When The Love is Gone, which also stars Gabby Concepcion, Cristine Reyes, Andi Eigenmann and Jake Cuenca and is helmed by direk Andoy Ranay, explores the many shades of love, whether “lost, gained, betrayed or unbound.” It’s no secret that Alice’s real-life 13-year marriage (which had her living abroad and leaving showbiz for some time) came to an end this year reportedly due to “irreconcilable differences.” They were childless. Though she admitted that the separation was “such a lonely time for me back then,” she would rather not dwell on “what-went-wrong” or “what-could-have-been” but focus instead her energies on coping, healing and learning from that episode in her life. Alice told The STAR, “Anybody copes differently. With me, it was my family (that helped me cope) and my personal beliefs that things will be better. I’ve always had a positive outlook that no matter what bad things happen in our lives. Like the song of Adele, ‘Sometimes it lasts, sometimes it hurts instead.’ It’s very true.” But it doesn’t mean, she has healed completely. “Up to now, honestly, there are Read More …

U.N. talks limp towards global 2015 climate deal

By Stian Reklev and Susanna Twidale WARSAW (Reuters) – Almost 200 countries on Saturday kept alive hopes for a global deal in 2015 to fight climate change after overcoming disputes on greenhouse gas emissions cuts and aid for poor nations at a meeting widely criticised as lacking urgency. Governments agreed in Poland that a new deal in 2015 would consist of a patchwork of national contributions to curb emissions that could blur a 20-year-old distinction between the obligations of rich and poor nations. The two-week meeting also created a Warsaw International Mechanism to help the poor cope with loss and damage from heatwaves, droughts, floods, desertification and rising sea levels – although rich nations refused to pledge new cash. Many said Warsaw had fallen short of what was needed. “We did not achieve a meaningful outcome,” said Naderev Sano, a Philippines delegate who had been fasting throughout the talks to urge action in sympathy with victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which killed more than 5,000 people. No major nation offered tougher action to slow rising world greenhouse gas emissions and Japan backtracked from its carbon goals for 2020, after shutting down its nuclear industry after the Fukushima disaster. GREEN PROTEST Environmentalists walked out on Thursday, exasperated by lack of progress. Rich nations are preoccupied with reviving their weak economies rather than climate change. “It is abundantly clear that we still have a long way to go,” said Christiana Figueres, the U.N. climate chief. Negotiators were on course for a 2015 summit Read More …

Japan extends $500k rice in emergency aid for Yolanda victims

Japan is extending additional emergency assistance to victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) with rice worth some $500,000. The Japanese Embassy in Manila said the Japanese government approved the delivery of the emergency rice using Japan’s contribution to the ASEAN Plus Three Rice Reserve (APTERR). “APTERR is a regional cooperation established in 2004 to ensure food security in an emergency caused by temporary and large scale calamities. Japan has funded so far $6.64 million in total since the start of APTERR,” the embassy said. It said this will be the second assistance to the Philippines using the framework of APTERR. Yolanda tore through Visayas and Southern Luzon last Nov. 8, leaving more than 5,000 dead as of Friday evening. The Japanese embassy cited the friendly relations between Japan and the Philippines, and the “dire needs” of the affected people for the emergency rice assistance. It also said past emergency assistance for the Philippines through APTERR included rice assistance worth $200,000 for the victims of typhoon Pablo in 2012. Japan earlier sent Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team and Japan’s Self-Defense Force Units for victims of Yolanda. It also provided: – Emergency grant aid worth $30 million– Emergency relief goods worth $600,000– Assistance through Japanese NGOs (JPF) worth $1.5 million– Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) of Asian Development Bank (ADB) worth $20 million — LBG, GMA News

Clarification of news article

MANILA, Philippines – We write in connection with the news article written by Mr. Victor C. Agustin entitled “Cash-strapped Erap targets big-name tax delinquents” published in the Money-Go-Round column of The Philippine STAR yesterday, Nov. 18, 2013. The said article reads in part: “After seizing the Harrison Plaza open carpark in favor of City Hall, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada has unleashed his revenue-strapped minions on other bold-faced names for alleged real estate tax delinquencies. Top on the Erap list: the Tutuban shopping center which is leased by Prime Orion Philippines Inc. for allegedly having accumulated a whopping P845 million in unpaid taxes since 2002. xxx” In the spirit of fair play and by way of clarification, please be informed that the alleged real property tax (RPT) delinquency pertains not to Prime Orion Philippines Inc. (POPI) (a listed company), but to the Philippine National Railways (PNR). PNR owns the land where Tutuban Center (which is owned by Tutuban Properties Inc. (TPI), an indirect subsidiary of POPI) is located. We understand that PNR has previously received RPT assessments from the Manila City Government, and PNR has filed a case against the latter questioning the validity of said assessments. However, a Notice of RPT Delinquency and Warrant of Levy were recently served on PNR. Neither TPI nor POPI has received any such notices. Under TPI’s Contract of Lease with PNR, TPI has the obligation to pay the RPT on improvements, which taxes have been paid faithfully by TPI; on the other hand, the Read More …

Body of British boy, 6, at Philippine mass grave

The body of a six-year-old British boy was among around 1,000 corpses at a mass grave in the typhoon-ravaged Philippines, his mother said Tuesday. Nurse Mary Joy Escalante Ducusin, who also lost her husband in the disaster, sobbed bitterly as she discovered the bag bearing his tiny corpse waiting to be put into the pit in a cemetery above the badly-hit city of Tacloban. “For several days I kept on searching for him but now I have found him,” she cried. “No words could really explain how painful it is.” Ducusin and her husband, both Philippine nationals, moved to Britain several years ago to work as nurses in Harlow, near London. Their only child, Jayro Den, was born there six years ago. He was a British passport holder and grew up speaking only English, she said. On Tuesday, Ducusin told of how two months after she and her husband had decided to move back to the Philippines to start a new life, the monster typhoon smashed into Tacloban, bringing a destructive storm surge that swamped whole neighbourhoods. “It was so quick,” she recalled. “All I remember was the water rising to the top of my house.” Jayro Den, Ducusin, her husband and his mother climbed onto the roof, but were blown off by the 315 kilometre (200 mile) an hour winds of Super Typhoon Haiyan that smashed through the central Philippines on November 8. All but 37-year-old Ducusin perished. “We were carried to the second floor of a house nearby. Read More …

He said after the first package is completed, they will proceed to the second package, which is the excavation. This will be done sometime in the first quarter of 2014 and is expected to be done in four months. The foundation is expected to be visible by the second quarter.
