China ready to help in rehab of Yolanda-hit areas

AP FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines — It may be at odds with the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea, but China is keen to help in another front. Already supporting relief operations in typhoon-ravaged Eastern Visayas, China is offering further assistance as the Philippines starts reconstruction efforts in the region, citing its experience in giving new life to its own provinces devastated by natural disasters. “In China, we suffer from natural disasters too. And after the earthquake in Sichuan, we went into rebuilding. We have experience we can show. We’ll be very happy to share this experience,” said Zhang Hua, spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Manila. At least 80,000 perished in the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the western Chinese province of Sichuan in May 2008, triggering landslides across the affected area. In 2011, the Chinese government declared “decisive victory” in rebuilding the province out of the rubble. “The whole province was demolished. Now, it’s completely rehabilitated after two to three years. Everything is new. People are enjoying their lives,” said Zhang, also deputy chief of the Chinese Embassy’s political section. He said Chinese Ambassador to Manila Ma Keqing has been working to arrange a meeting with former Senator Panfilo Lacson, the just appointed rehabilitation czar, to discuss possible areas of cooperation. “They will exchange views,” said Zhang of the planned meeting, details of which would soon be finalized. “Both of our countries are disaster prone. We are both countries that suffer from disasters. In this area, we can cooperate Read More …

Pasahero app drives passengers’ worries away, promotes safe commuting in the Philippines

In the Philippines, it’s a common habit for people who ride taxis or other public transportation to send an SMS to a family member containing the plate number of the vehicle before boarding. Many dangers face commuters every day when riding public vehicles – difficulty hailing buses and taxis, accidents, holdups, and pick-pockets. Informing loved ones before each journey is a small step to ensure a passenger’s safety. A new app called Pasahero taps into this trend in a more advanced way. Users input the plate number of the vehicle and can upload a photo of the vehicle or the driver. The app then tracks the movement of the vehicle. The app has a panic button that’s easily accessible while in transit. Users can select trusted contacts to be alerted if something goes wrong – like an accident or a holdup. The user’s trusted contacts can then report the incident to the authorities. Broadcasting network ABS-CBN created Pasahero to compliment the existing selection of public transportation apps in the Philippines. Meaning ‘passenger’ in Filipino, Pasahero especially applies to rural areas where a number of muggers and pick-pockets choose different public transportation vehicles as their modus operandi. Part of the plan to improve the app is to link the panic button to the emergency hotlines of government bodies in charge of traffic operations such as the Land Transportation Office and the Metro Manila Development Authority. Given the difficulty of commuting in the Philippines, Tech in Asia has already spotted a number Read More …

Philippines' post-typhoon rebuilding to take five years

Rebuilding areas devastated by a super typhoon that killed thousands in the Philippines will take up to five years and cost more than two billion dollars, officials said Saturday. The comments came as the death toll from Haiyan, one of the most powerful typhoons to ever hit the country, continued to rise. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 5,632 people had been confirmed dead while 1,759 were still missing following the category five storm earlier this month. “The total rehabilitation will take three to five years, depending on the pace of our support system and the projects we implement,” Eduardo del Rosario, executive director of the NDRRMC, said. He told reporters that President Benigno Aquino did not want to merely repair the damage but wants the new structures to be better than those that were standing before the storm. “Our president wants the rehabilitation to be ‘build-back better communities,” so they can withstand future storms,” del Rosario said. Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson said: “We are looking at over a hundred billion pesos ($2.2 billion) of reconstruction, from livelihood, commerce, social services,” as well as infrastructure and power facilities. That figure does not include the huge amounts already spent on immediate relief for the millions of people who were injured or left without food, water or shelter. About 15 to 20 billion pesos will go to providing shelter with some 60,000 to 80,000 families to be re-settled in two to three years, said Singson. This will include Read More …

Protecting your children from head lice

MANILA, Philippines – Head lice are more than just a nuisance: it can be a source of psychological distress and may even be traumatic if the affected person is a child who then becomes a victim of teasing or even bullying. However, if one child becomes infected with head lice, the entire household is threatened. This calls for measures that protect the entire home and all family members. There are several steps you may take to protect your home from head lice. Practicing personal hygiene will help prevent head lice infestation.  Shower daily and be sure to keep the hair clean. It’s important that family members avoid sharing combs and hairbrushes. Head lice can be transferred from one person to another through direct contact (head lice cannot hop from one person’s head to another’s) so sharing combs and hairbrushes increases the risk of getting infected. Sharing beddings, linens, and pillows with an infected person may also spread head lice. When a head lice infestation is present in the house, soak all the beddings, linens, and pillowcases in hot water (around 130 degrees Fahrenheit) for 15 minutes. Alternatively, these items may be placed in a hot dryer for about 30 minutes, or they may be dry-cleaned. Clean and vacuum around the house. Keeping the house free of dirt and mess will help get rid of head lice that may be lying around.  Fortunately, lice and nits cannot survive long without a human host — only about one or two days. In the past two years, an annual average of 2,000 companies folded up due to economic difficulty. The closures resulted to displacement of over 30,000 workers each year.
