Lives of danger, poverty on Philippines' typhoon coast

Life is a constant throw of the dice for farmer Nilo Dilao and other residents of the Philippine island of Samar, the ground zero for many of East Asia’s deadliest storms. Homes, boats, crops, livestock and jobs are all on the line each time the monster winds roar in from the Pacific Ocean, leaving survivors to mourn their dead and pick up the broken pieces, year in and year out. “Life is a struggle here,” Dilao, 43, told AFP a few days after Typhoon Hagupit destroyed his shanty and killed more than 20 people this month. He likened the plight of local people to those of stray chickens. “We’re scratching at the soil non-stop in hopes of finding a scrap to eat,” he said. Hagupit came a year after Super Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest ever storm recorded on land, killed 7,350 people on Samar and neighbouring islands. Samar, about half the size of Belgium, is often the first major Asian landmass hit by the more than 20 tropical storms or typhoons that are born in the Pacific Ocean each year. With much of the mountainous island stripped by deforestation, most of its 1.8 million residents live on narrow, sea-level strips along the coast, at the mercy of the storms’ ferocious winds and tsunami-like ocean surges. Living in the town of Taft on Samar’s east coast, the Dilao family survived both the storm surges of both Hagupit and Haiyan by fleeing to a nearby hill, waiting them out under a raggedy Read More …

Palace: No discussion yet on who will replace retiring Comelec chief

There is still no discussion—at least officially—at this time on who will replace Sixto Brillantes Jr., who is due to retire as Commission on Elections chairman in February, Malacañang said Saturday. Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda downplayed reports that Justice Secretary Leila de Lima is being eyed as a potential replacement for Brillantes. “Wala akong narinig na official diyan. We cannot confim that. There’s no discussion yet as to who will be recommended as the next Comelec chair,” he said on government-run dzRB radio. Besides, he said anyone who will be named will have to go through the confirmation process. So far, he said the Palace has no nominee for the post. “The President has not informed us of his choice,” he said. Brillantes, along with Commissioners Elias Yusoph and Lucenito Tagle, are to retire in February 2015. On Friday, Brillantes dressed up as Santa Claus in what could be his last Christmas as Comelec chairman. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News

Be – longing

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: “What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” ― C.S. Lewis Not to go much into the who, what, where, when and why, but at one point in my school career, I accepted an invitation to attend a summer leadership conference. It was not what I expected. Of the handful of memories that I’ve retained from that three-day experience, most of them involve me, surrounded by a group of much more enthusiastic participants, moving my hands in some sort of cheer. Every speaker that came to talk to us had to be met with an OUTSTANDING (O-U-T * S-T-A-N-D * I-N-G out, out standing)! Walks to perform community service involved us “Singing in the rain.” Perhaps I was just being a grumpy teenager, whose thoughts, more often than not, rested longingly on the fanfiction chapter I wanted to be working on, but couldn’t–and yet, even as my voice slipped in between all the others, I didn’t really feel a part of the group. On the last night, my team (a subset of the larger masses) gathered around a campfire, glow-in-the-dark necklaces clinging to us as if we were as attractive to fireflies as we were to mosquitoes. One by one, the others each talked about how surprised they were to have found a family there. I thought, I’m not even sure I remember most of your names, and thinking back on it now, only two faces Read More …

MOMOLing and HOHOLing with the Nightout Boys

For more than eight years now, Magic 89.9 DJs Slick Rick (Eric Virata), Tony Toni (Anthony James Bueno) and Sam YG (Samir Gogna) have been entertaining listeners with their radio program, Boys Night Out. They’ve become well-known for their naughtiness, frankness and wackiness in addressing relationship issues shared by their callers. The boys have even coined words that describe certain relationship stages that a man and woman find themselves in, such as “MOMOL” which means “Make-Out-Make-Out Lang” and “HOHOL” for “Hang-Out-Hang-Out-Lang.” So what’s new? The trio is ending 2014 with a book called I Need Space, the first release of ICON, a label of Viva PSICOM Publication Corp., which publishes works of famous personalities. A compilation of the hottest topics they have talked about on their show, the book aims to help single men analyze their solitary state. What have they done or what are they doing to remain single? You don’t have to be single to enjoy the book. Buy a copy (availabe in bookstores since Dec. 15) and find out for yourselves. Let’s try to pick the brains of the trio.
