Why is it that there are people who are so secretive?

Chinkee Tan Do you know of people who are so secretive? People who you think are telling the truth, but are really hiding something from you? Or do you consider yourself as a secretive person? Do you sometimes find yourself not telling the entire story, or even telling an entirely different story, just so you could make your way out of a certain situation? “Mom, we have a group study tonight. I’ll be home late.” (But the truth is, you just want to go on a night-out with your friends.) “Just forget about it, I’m okay.” (But the truth is, the issues in your marriage have been piling up.) “Everything is going well, Sir.” (But the truth is, the client already backed out.) “Yes, it’s still with me, don’t worry.” (But the truth is, you lost it the day your friend asked you to keep it.) There are two kinds of secrets in this world. The first is the kind of secret that someone trusted you to keep. These are the kinds of things that you’re not supposed to tell anyone else about. The second kind is the secret that you try so hard to keep to yourself, but others need to know about – the kind that will only cause trouble if the people who are involved in the issue don’t find out about it. Sometimes, even if we already know that we will be putting other people at risk, or that we will be hurting others, or that Read More …

Manila’s ABV, The Curator in Asia’s 50 Best Bar’s

The inaugural list of Asia’s 50 Best Bar lists Manila’s ABV and The Curator in the top 14 and 16 spots. Alcohol by Volume (ABV), at 14th spot, was cited by the list as a burger joint in Makati City that is “actually the gateway to a 1920s throwback” with its “Prohibition-style speakeasy with a copper bar top in brick and wood space.” The list also noted ABV’s classic and signature drinks, with the “largest absinthe collection in town” consisting of “more than 30 bottles, from classic French-style absinthe pours to an absinthe fountain.” The Curator Coffee & Cocktail is recognized for its team in Manila “that really, really knows its cocktails.” The Curator team is credited for viewing both coffee and cocktails as art, science and craft. The Makati third wave multi-roaster café by day and bar by night, prepares drinks “carefully created with proper technique, churning out some of the most profound flavor profiles in the country to date.” Asian Academy members consisting of elite high level bartenders, bar consultants, brand ambassadors, and journalists who consistently travel throughout the region, voted for the Asian spinoff of the World’s Best Bar. The two Philippine bars ranked in the top 50 best bars from a shortlist of 215 best bars in the Asian region produced by Drinks International.   Related posts: Manila one of the world’s best cities for coffee Manila main feature in Condé Nast Traveller magazine Manila one of the most youthful cities in the world Two PHL cities named ‘Selfie’ Read More …

Why Am I So Shy?

Chinkee Tan Do you know of anyone who is “naturally” shy? Or are you, yourself, “naturally” shy? My question for you is this: What are you so shy about? What do you find so embarrassing about your life? What is it about yourself that you find so shameful? Are you embarrassed to recite in class because you might give the wrong answer? Are you ashamed to court a woman because you think that a woman of her status would never entertain an average, so-so guy like you? Are you embarrassed to offer that product you are selling because you’re afraid that people will reject you? Are you embarrassed to ask for directions because you don’t want to people to think that you’re stupid? Are you ashamed to share your ideas in a group, afraid that people will find no value in them? If you find yourself being shy about a lot of things, you need to understand that being shy is a very big hindrance to one’s success. The good thing is, you can overcome it. How? Discover the cause First of all, you need to discover and understand the root cause of your shyness. We need to dig deep and get to the very roots of the issue. Imagine that your shyness is a tree – only when you take the tree by its roots will you able to completely get rid of it; simply taking out its leaves will not do. To dig deep and get to the Read More …

Problems often feel like they are ‘unlimited’, never ending, one following the other. So let me tell you right now that while there is still breath in you and while you are still living in this world, you will experience different kinds of problems. These problems have purposes. Confessions of a Negative Person

Chinkee Tan What if I go bankrupt? What if I fail? What if nothing happens? Why do I always think of the negative? Why is it so hard to think about the positive? Are you tired of negative people? Are you dismayed with their never-ending rants? Negative thoughts here, negative thoughts there. Complain here, complain there. It can be so tempting to shout sense into them and shake them into realization! You want them to wake up to the reality that it is not all negative in this world. You want them to know that they have the ability to change their mindset They know they are negative but they seem to not be able to do anything about avoiding negative thinking. Why are there people like these? ENVIRONMENT Environment plays a big factor in a person’s outlook in life. If, for instance, when as a child all you heard was “no”, “don’t do that”, or “stop it”, then you would most likely end up having a negative overview of life. You will not gain the confidence to embrace life’s realities because as a child, you were limited. PEOPLE THAT SURROUND YOU Another thing that can affect a person’s outlook is the company you are with. If you are often among complainers, then you will most likely become one. If they always respond in anger to situations, then you will also end up with an angry outlook. If they tend to use cuss words all the time, then you will Read More …

The Power of Belief

Chinkee Tan Are you losing heart? Are you losing confidence in yourself? Are you beginning to feel like you are not as good as the rest? You don’t feel motivated to even do simple tasks in life because you feel like no one believes in you anyway. Let me tell you now, YOU should be the very first person to believe in yourself. Before anyone else can believe in what you can do, you need to first believe that you can do it. If not, if you don’t think you can do it then you will never be able to do it. Because what you believe becomes the truth. If you believe you are a loser, then you will end up being one. If you believe you are going to fail, then you will fail. But if you believe that you are going to succeed, then you will succeed indeed! Just like the song that goes, ‘There can be miracles when you believe…’. In order for you to achieve your goals and become what you want to be, you have to believe. Believe that you are good and that you have incredible talent. Believe that trials are not going to stop you from achieving success and what you want. Believe, despite the discouragements around you. Believe, despite it being impossible. Believe that you can, with the help of God. Believe that there is still hope. Believe that your efforts will pay off. Believe that your time will come. Believe that Read More …

What Do You Do When People Are Saying Hurtful Things About You?

Chinkee Tan Were you insulted? Were sarcastic remarks hurled your way? Were you hurt because of the words said about you? Words are powerful; it can bring life, it can kill. Each and every word that comes out of our mouths should be well thought of, simply because it cannot be taken back once it has been said. Words are powerful. But what if we are on the receiving end of hurtful words? How should we react? What do we do? Do we retaliate or should we let it go? There are two things that you can choose to do when someone speaks negative things about you. FORGIVE THE PERSON I know, it is easier said than done. Forgiving is not easy to do, but if you hold back from doing it, you will just be torturing yourself. You have already been hurt because of the words said about you – do you think that not forgiving and being bitter will lighten the load in your heart? The truth is you’re not doing yourself a favor by making yourself a prisoner of unforgiveness. You’re just helping the person who said bad things about you continue to ruin you. They’ve said you are worthless, useless, irresponsible, gold digger, obese, anorexic, and other things that are offensive. What then? Are you going to just let it affect you in more negative ways? Or will you choose to be positive, doing things that will boost your confidence? Will you choose to be positive, Read More …

Pera o Bayong?

Chinkee Tan For most, the basis of a person’s success is his wealth. When a person is able to buy a new car, then he is successful. If he lives in a big house, he is successful. If she is able to travel anywhere she wants, then she is successful. Yes, we can assume that they are successful financially because they can afford these things. But is success just all about the money? For me, it is not. What determines TRUE SUCCESS is CHARACTER. How do I attain that? Before anyone can even buy any of those expensive stuff, he or she has to go through a process to reach the goal, which is the fund that is needed. This process includes working hard for it eight hours a day, five to six days per week. So the question is, did you work hard for this or did you just get a loan for the money? If you are in the sales industry, have you reached the position you are in now through the proper means or did you violate a company policy to get the recognition? To get what you want in life, have you stepped on other people’s feet or did you help them while on your way to your goal. Having the RIGHT CHARACTER during the journey to success is crucial. Whenever we work, we shouldn’t just focus on the result, which is the money. Let’s remember that we need to have the right mentality in order Read More …

DOST Free Wi-Fi to boost online income earners

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) reports that by the end of 2015 an estimated 1.5 million Filipinos have earned dollars without leaving the country, having found work through the internet. The report says Filipinos working online are given jobs in writing, graphic and web design, desktop publishing, software development, audio and video editing, and as virtual assistants. The earning rates average $3per hour and $250 per project. Variations in income rates depend on the job’s level of difficulty. The worker’s online reputation is also considered, gleaned from ratings given by previous online employers. Online Jobs can be found through job portals such as UpWork.com, Freelancer.ph and OnlineJobs.ph. Employers are usually small to medium-sized companies or individuals abroad who choose to outsource certain jobs and functions in order to be cost effective. An online worker needs a computer with Internet access as well as the necessary skills to do the job. The key requirement of internet access need is where the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Office of DOST steps in to boost the number of online income earners, targeting Filipinos in the provinces to use this alternative means to earning income. “The Juan Konek Free Wi-Fi Internet access in public places project hopes to address this. With faster Internet connectivity available in all municipalities, this can significantly increase the number of Filipinos earning a living through the Internet,” DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo said in the DOST release. Juan Konek is part of the ICT Office’s Digital Empowerment Read More …

Daily Mail picks PHL as Asia’s next must-see destination

United Kingdom’s Mail Online recently posted an article calling the Philippines, Asia’s new must-see destination is the Philippines… complete with thriller Manila and 7,000 perfectly-preserved paradise islands.” [via the Daily Mail] http://www.goodnewspilipinas.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Philippines-60×60.jpg The article by Peter Lloyd listed the reasons why the Philippines should be on the traveler’s list, posting anecdotes and pictures from his travels in the country. The UK publication highlighted the South East Asian archipelago’s 7,000 isles with its stunning remote islands. The writer encouraged visitors to enjoy the capital city of Manila for all its hustle and bustle, even accepting the notorious epic traffic saying, “the adrenaline-inducing roads were surprisingly entertaining thanks to inventive ways locals out-smart their tail-backs with jeepneys – Manila’s death-defying buses (military jeeps left-over by US troops following the Second World War).” Photos of the Philippine jeepney were captioned with, “The thriller that’s Manila: The city’s famous Jeepney buses – old US military trucks from WW2 – ensure the capital’s roads are never dull.” Another street scene was captioned, “Traffic: Famed for its epic gridlock, the adrenaline-inducing transport system is an unlikely (but must-see) tourist trap.” The writer spoke of the multiple offerings of culture, shopping and nightlife with VIP beach breaks. Lloyd recommended going beyond Manila and praised the country’s idyllic islands which he said, “feel truly secluded and untouched.” He recommended visitors see the islands of Bohol, Panglao, and Palawan.
