Verizon boosts drive against domestic violence

INQUIRER.net U.S. Bureau October 21st, 2015 08:35 PM NEW YORK CITY— In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Verizon is donating a portion of every purchase from a Verizon store to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, the company announced. With every online or in-store purchase of exclusive purple accessories, like a headset, phone or tablet case, HopeLine® from Verizon will donate $1, up to $100,000 to the national hotline. HopeLine is also trying to reach its goal of one million phone donations by the end of 2015. Consumers are encouraged drop off wireless phones, chargers and accessories, from any carrier, at a Verizon store to help support victims and survivors of domestic violence. Domestic violence is an issue rarely talked about in Asian American communities, but unfortunately it’s very prevalent: 41 – 61% of Asian women report experiencing physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime. This is higher than the rates in a national study reported by all other races. “Going purple,” the color of Domestic Violence Awareness, is also a way of generating awareness of this serious problem. To show  support, sharing this announcement on your social media channels. We know Trump’s views of Mexicans, what about Asians?

INQUIRER.net U.S. Bureau By: Emil Guillermo, October 21st, 2015 08:34 PM In the last general election, polling data showed that among Asian Americans there was a good number of what I call GOPinoys. In other words, a right-ward drift from among us. If you are a tilting Filipino of the conservative kind, I’d suggest you take note of what the GOP standard-bearer is saying. But first, a question: How many times, as a Filipino, have you been called Mexican? Or Chinese? Or Japanese? Or Puerto Rican? Just anything but Filipino. It’s that damn Spanish-sounding last name, right? Or maybe it’s another Asian sounding name like Go, Goh, or Ngo? But what if your last name is Murphy by marriage, yours or your mother’s? Confusing, isn’t it? It happens a lot based on names and appearances, even now. Add race and it’s a toxic mix. And just look at who’s behind the most newsworthy example to date: Donald Trump. Maybe you saw what happened to Joseph Choe, a 20-year old-whose parents immigrated from Korea. Choe is an economics student at Harvard who recently learned a lesson in supply and demand. When he heard Donald Trump supplying untruths about South Korea on the campaign, Choe decided he’d demand the truth from the Donald. Or at the very least a correction. Choe went to confront Trump at a rally in New Hampshire last week, dubbed the “No Labels Problem Solver” convention. But all Trump saw were labels. As reported by AP, Trump saw Read More …

Meanwhile, the suspect identified as Li Qing Liang, was already in police custody, according to Councilor Dave Tumulak, head of Cebu City’s Command Center. The consul general and his staff members, Sun Shan and Hui Li, were among the nine persons who had lunch at one of the function rooms of Lighthouse Restaurant  along General Maxilom Avenue. Tumulak said he received a call from the Chinese Consulate Office shortly after the shooting incident broke about 1:30 p.m. to verify reports on Ronghua. Some members of the Chinese community in Cebu had been calling other city officials to verify reports on the shooting, he added. “It’s sad that the incident happened in the city especially during a time when Mayor Michael Rama is out of town,”  said Tumulak. Rama is on official travel to Japan. Homicide investigators were still trying to find out what triggered the shooting, said  Cebu Sr. Supt. Mariano Batiancela, City Police Office director. Can we learn any values by watching AlDub?

Chinkee Tan They are all over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TV, Radio and newspapers. I am talking about Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza (a.k.a Yaya Dub) or better known as “AlDub,” the stars of Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye (literal meaning “street series”). Who are they and how did they manage to catch the attention, admiration and romantic itch of each child, adult, male or female, within just a mere three months? Is it because they are a good-looking pair? Well, yes…but all of us, whether love teams or individuals, showbiz people or not, are really created beautiful and handsome. Is it because they are a new love team in showbiz? Hmm, if this were the case, then I’m not too sure, because it shouldn’t be this fast. This is considered only “warm up” period. Is it because of the DubSmash trend? It surely helped, because that’s where Yaya Dub’s character started. Is it because of their literal “LDR” relationship? Perhaps. They have this chemistry even if they are in an “LDR” or Long Distance Relationship due to their split screen communication and interaction. All of these are true, but I believe that there is a much deeper reason why millions of fans support the tandem AlDub and here they are: VALUES Values that we have forgotten. Values that we have thrown away. Values that lead us back to what is morally acceptable. What are these evident values that we have seen, so far, in Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye? RESPECT FOR THE ELDERLY “Ma! Read More …

PH still mulling over UN plea to take in Syrians

Philippine Daily Inquirer By: Jerry E. Esplanada, September 21st, 2015 05:54 AM Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO The Philippines has yet to respond to the plea of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to accept Syrian refugees escaping their war-torn country, according to Malacañang. Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma on Sunday said over the state-run Radyo ng Bayan the Philippines, which admitted thousands of Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s and ’80s, had yet to reply to the UN agency. “We just want to make sure that we can manage it properly, that we don’t take on more than we can handle,” Coloma said, quoting President Aquino. Coloma, also head of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), said the President had noted that a large number of Filipinos were still living in extreme poverty. “We would like to deploy our resources to better the lives of our people and do our fair share,” Mr. Aquino was quoted as saying. The PCOO chief said that before responding to the United Nation’s call, there is a need to look at the country’s situation and have our capabilities assessed by the United Nations and other organizations. “The President himself has said that we should ensure that we’re doing enough to help our countrymen in calamity-hit areas because they are the government’s priority,” Coloma said. Bernard Kerblat, the UNHCR representative to Manila, had urged President Aquino to respond to his agency’s call to admit Syrian refugees fleeing their devastated country Read More …
