Palace wrong in comparing SWS and Pulse Asia ratings – expert

It was wrong for Malacañang to use the results of the recent Social Weather Stations survey to surmise that the public has started to understand President Benigno Aquino III’s position as regards the Mamasapano incident, a political management expert said on Wednesday. Political campaign strategist Malou Tiquia, founder and general manager of Publicus Asia Inc., said Aquino’s seemingly better ratings in the latest SWS survey should not be compared with those released by Pulse Asia a few weeks ago. Tiquia made the remark after Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma said in a statement that public gave the President a higher satisfaction rating of 47 percent in the SWS survey than the 38 percent in Pulse Asia’s earlier poll because of more information as regards the Mamasapano tragedy. “To say that SWS captured a correction on the dip is wrong because the questions asked were different. You cannot compare apples and oranges in the case of what is being measured,” Tiquia said in an online correspondence with GMA News Online. According to Tiquia, Pulse Asia asked its respondents, thus: “Mayroon ako ritong mga pangalan ng ilang mga opisyal ng ating pamahalaan.  Pakisabi ninyo ang inyong opinion tungkol sa pagganap nila ng kanilang tungkulin nitong huling tatlong buwan….” She said that SWS, on the other hand, asked: “Please tell me how satisfied or dissatisfied you are with the performance of Benigno Aquino III as President of the Philippines…” “Spins or propaganda may hide the real culprit for the dip but that may not Read More …

PNoy’s aunt Tingting seeks SC help vs. Comelec probe

Former Tarlac Governor Margarita “Tingting” Cojuangco on Monday asked the Supreme Court to stop the Commission on Elections (Comelec) from tackling a complaint filed against her and 13 others for alleged poll fraud. In a 54-page petition, Cojuangco asked the SC to nullify findings of the Comelec’s law department to charge her with violation of Section 261 of Batas Pambansa Blg. 881 or the Omnibus Election Code and Republic Act 8436 as amended by Section 28 of Republic Act No. 9369 or the Automated Election Law. According to the Comelec, Cojuangco, aunt of President Benigno Aquino III, and her co-accused conspired to steal and tamper official ballots to discredit the 2013 midterm elections. Section 261 prohibits “destroying, substituting or taking away from the place where they are legally deposited, any election form or document or ballot box which contains official ballots or other documents used in the election.” Meanwhile, Section 28 of R.A. 9369 prohibits the unauthorized use of stolen and tampered official ballots. Cojuangco insisted the Comelec should be prevented from taking cognizance of the complaint-affidavits filed by former Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. and alleged witness Worthy Acosta. Cojuangco branded the complaint as a “political hatchet job,” adding it not only violated her right to due process, but also her right to free speech, among other rights. “Other than the glaring fact that petitioner never committed the election offenses for which she now stands charged before the Comelec, the affidavits and the formal complaints miserably failed to raise Read More …

Group asks Sereno to probe alleged corruption in judiciary

A national consumers rights group has urged Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to probe allegations of corrupt practices in the judiciary. In a statement sent to media on Monday, Coalition of Filipino Consumers (CFC) secretary general Perfecto Jaime Tagalog said they have learned that some members of the Court of Appeals have accepted money from “influential individuals” with pending cases. “This should not happen as cases should be decided based on merits,” Tagalog said. “They are supposed to be living and leading decent lives as magistrates.” “But not all justices are for sale. There are just exceptions,” Tagalog added, stressing that only a small percentage of them are tainting the judiciary. Reacting to the CFC’s call, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Malacañang supports calls for Sereno to probe corruption in the judiciary. “We are all against corruption in all its forms. We are, however, recognizing the role of the separation of powers and the existence of the three branches of government. We will defer to the Chief Justice as to how the Supreme Court handles corruption cases within their branch,” he said. The CFC’s appeal came barely a year after the Supreme Court ordered the Court of Appeals to investigate four regional trial court judges dragged into the alleged influence-peddling in the judiciary involving a certain “Ma’am Arlene.” “Ma’am Arlene” is described in earlier news reports as the judiciary’s version of alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles. “Ma’am Arlene” allegedly throws birthday parties for appellate court justices and trial Read More …

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — The writer, a thin young man who fears the growing interweaving of religion and politics in Bangladesh, knows his turn could come next. What happened earlier this week, when the second secularist blogger in less than a month was hacked to death in the streets of the capital, made it clear he wasn’t safe. “Anytime they can hit me or my like-minded friends,” said Ananya Azad, a 25-year-old blogger who has written pieces that were critical of Islamic fundamentalism and politics driven by religion. He quit his job as a newspaper columnist and stopped writing blogs in recent months after receiving numerous threats, but still posts critical comments on Facebook. Pinoy scientist who brings food in space

APOLLO ARQUIZA proudly showing the Philippine flag embroidered on his jacket. BANGKOK, Thailand—Apollo Arquiza is not the usual scientist in a lab coat talking about space and mathematical equations. Instead, he talks about the looming food shortage in the world especially in disaster-prone areas like the Philippines and how the food technology he helped developed for space missions could also be used on Earth. He was in Thailand for a week for a study and field visits sponsored by the Thailand Institute of Scientific Technology Research under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Balik Scientist Program After staying in the United States since 2005 for his PhD in Biological and Environmental Engineering and Advance Life Support at Cornell University, Arquiza, also a research assistant and lecturer, is in the Philippines under the Balik Scientist Program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). During the 90-day program, Arquiza collaborated with the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) and DOST regarding the food processing technology. “During the harvest season, vegetables and fruits in the Philippines can be brought at lower prices. The idea is for the local government to buy these products directly from the farmers who, in turn, will be processed and used as ‘food for calamity,’” Arquiza explains. DOST and FNRI arranged Arquiza’s visits to calamity-hit areas in the Philippines like Tacloban City and Cagayan de Oro. “The usual food pack distributed during calamity includes sardines, noodles and rice. But these are not really nutritious. So we need to Read More …

PHLPost, BOC ink MOA to simplify examination and delivery of mail parcels

The Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) inked a landmark memorandum of agreement (MOA) that will make the process of clearing and delivery of parcels and other mail matters faster and simpler, benefitting thousands of consumers and Philippine residents who rely on the postal service to send and receive packages from abroad. The streamlined method will speed up the system with a centralized design in collecting duties and taxes so that items get released faster. It took painstaking efforts from the present administration of both PHLPost and BOC to synergize and institute significant reforms, but more than the profit, our ultimate goal is to serve the people, especially that the holiday season is coming,” said PHLPost postmaster general and CEO Josie dela Cruz. Under the MOA, PHLPost and BOC shall centralize examination and assessment of customs duties for all parcels and mail matters at the Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEC) for those that arrived by air and at the surface mail exchange department (SMED) for those conveyed by sea. Tagle wishes for more priests serving poor parishes

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle on Maundy Thursday made a wish for more priest choosing to serve in poor parishes. Tagle made the wish before the archdiocese’s priests at a Chrism Mass at the Manila Cathedral, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines news site said. “I look forward to the time when our priests would be vying for assignments in the poorest parishes,” the CBCP news site quoted Tagle as saying in his homily. He said it is the duty of priests to serve those most in need, particularly now as this is the Year of the Poor. The prelate recounted a meeting he had with survivors of a fire that destroyed several houses in the Parola compound in Manila earlier this year, where 15,000 were displaced. He noted that despite their plight, those affected still had “their faith unshaken and stronger than ever amid the devastation.” Those affected by the fire appeared thankful and happy that “God loves them regardless of what they have been through,” and that the Church “made an effort to be with them, to join them in their hardships.” Fr. Jeremiah Adviento of the Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Camba Parish, which has jurisdiction over Parola, was with Tagle cardinal when he visited the area, recalled Tagle rode a jeepney to the site. Adviento added Tagle held Mass last April 1 in a makeshift basketball court. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
