Until recently, 29 year-old Merry Rose De Vera was homeless, living on the street, and making ends meet by going through people’s trash. De Vera, who eloped with her boyfriend when she was only 19, lived in along the South Pier in Manila, where she became a mother of three children. Because of their horrible living conditions, her kids grew up sickly and weak, and were constantly in and out of government hospitals because of pneumonia. “Ang buhay po sa kalsada sobrang hirap. Naranasan ko na kumain ng galing sa basurahan… Hindi kami halos makaligo ng isang linggo. Ang hirap po talaga tapos kapag umuulan, hindi mo alam kung saan ka tatakbo para makasilong kasi mababasa ka talaga. “’Yung mga anak ko nga halos laman ng ospital ‘yun e… laging polmunya ang sakit,” she told ABS-CBN News. After suffering through domestic abuse from the father of her children, Merry Rose decided to find away to achieve gainful employment that would provide her children a better life. The answer to her prayers came from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), who suggested that she should attend the free livelihood training offered by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in Sampaloc Manila. “Inalok po ako ng DSWD kasi po 4Ps [Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program] member po ako… Tinanong po nila ako kung gusto ko daw po mag-aral ng TESDA [Technical Education and Skills Development Authority] para magkaroon ng trabaho. Sabi ko ‘susubukan ko po,” she says. Merry Rose Read More …

18 Benefits of Having and Being a Mentor

Armando Bartolome You may be familiar with the popular book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” written by Robert Kiyosaki. I often cite this book as an example of how people have differing views about life. Parents always remind their kids about the value of education. For sure, when we don’t take education seriously, we lose much from life. But success in any business is a combination of many factors. One of the keys to success is learning more and more about your business. Not everything is learned in school and learning does not stop when you step out of the classroom. The wealth of experience of certain individuals is a good source of wisdom for entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs alike. What is a mentor? A mentor is a professional who shares knowledge and advice and helps a business grow. The relationship benefits entrepreneurs, employees and the mentor in many ways. My years of being in the business has allowed me to help many who, I am proud to say, have established well-known brands in the Philippines. This is the reason why I love what I do. A mentor acts as a guide and provides valuable information that can help an entrepreneur manage his business better. Here are some of the things a mentor does: Educates the mentee on how to accept feedback in important areas, such as communications, technical abilities, change management, and leadership skills Helps the mentee better understand the organization’s culture and unspoken rules, both of which can be Read More …

Philippine stock market surges to new all-time high this week

The Philippines is one of the best performing stock markets in Asia, after breaking new record highs two times this week. On Tuesday, the PSEi finished at a fresh record high of 8,312.93. On Wednesday, the benchmark index scaled new heights surpassing the previous day’s high to close at 8,344.05. The investor euphoria continued throughout the week as the benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index soared to an intra-day record above the 8,400 mark on Friday but at end of the trading day closed at 8,310.88. Philippine stocks are rising due to several factors – investors are taking their cue from upbeat US economic data and record highs on Wall Street. Investors continue to remain bullish about the prospects of the Philippine economy, expectations of a tax overhaul and government’s plan to liberalize foreign ownership restrictions in highly regulated industries is further bringing good tidings to the market. The local stock barometer gained by another 31.12 points, surpassing Tuesday’s record high of 8,312.93. The proposed tax reform measures include expanding the value-added tax base, raising excise taxes on fuel and automobiles, and slap levies on sugar-sweetened beverages will add billions of pesos into the government’s coffers. On growth, the government has set a full year growth target of 6.5 percent to 7.5 percent for 2017. The local economy accelerated 6.5 percent in the second quarter, mainly due to higher government spending, strong domestic demand, and increased farm output. Local stocks are being led by financial, industrial, services, holding companies and mining Read More …

Manileños will finally have a respite from the incessant flooding affecting the streets of Metro Manila every time heavy rains bombard the city during monsoon season The World Bank (WB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will soon infuse the Philippine government with around P23 billion for the Metro Manila Flood Management Project. Bulk of this amount, or P20 billion, will be spent by the Department of Public Works and Highways to modernize 36 existing pumping stations of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), as well as build 20 additional stations across Manila, Pasay, Taguig, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasig, Valenzuela, Quezon City, and Caloocan. The remaining P3 billion will be allocated to improve the MMDA’s “solid waste collection services, community mobilization and awareness campaigns, incentive-based waste collection, and to purchase more waste collection equipment.” “With this project, the government is taking an important step in the implementation of the Metro Manila Flood Management Master Plan designed to safely control floods in the national capital region and surrounding areas,” said Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar, in a report by Rappler. The National Housing Authority (NHA) assures it will resettle displaced informal settlers to be affected by the flood control project as the government looks to clear the waterways of refuse and detritus that are often the cause of flooding whenever there’s heavy rains. The project is slated to start this year and is scheduled to be completed in 2024. Aside from building new Read More …

Filipina singer, Alisah Bonaobra made it to the Six Chair Challenge of the X-Factor UK, but it did not go without a hitch. Interaksyon reports that after wowing the judges in her initial audition, she was eliminated in the Boot Camp round, with Rai-Elle Williams besting her, Natalie Lomax and fellow Pinay, Gaga Lord. But here’s where Alisah turned the tide: she refused to leave the stage, and pleaded with the judges to give her a second chance. “We made a decision unanimously. Sorry.” answered X-Factor UK judge Simon Cowell. However, Nicole Scherzinger spoke up, and when she asked Alisah what she wanted to do, Alisah asked for a second chance to prove herself. At this point, Alisah belted out excerpts from the group performance, impressing the judges. “Based on what you did there, from what I can hear, we’re going to give you a pass on this one,” said Simon. This seemed to fuel the Filipina talent when she on stage the next day, and, more determined that ever, said: “I don’t want this battle to be over yet. This battle is for my family.” For that round, she chose to sing Defying Gravity from the Broadway show, Wicked, nailing every note and ultimately bringing the house down. Alisah is now moving on to the next phase of the X-Factor UK; bringing her a step closer to fulfilling her dream.
