Aquino to inspect upgraded Navy post near West Philippine Sea

Wainwright MANILA (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III will inspect an upgraded naval post tasked to defend Philippine interests in the West Philippine Sea, or the South China Sea, amid territorial issues with the country’s giant neighbor China, Malacañang announced Monday. Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Aquino will witness the capability demonstration of the Naval Forces West (NFW) Command Center and the conceptual master plan of the Naval Station Carlito Cunanan (NSCC) in Puerto Princesa, Palawan on Tuesday. He said NFW, the Navy’s primary operational command securing the West Philippine Sea, is at the “forefront” of territorial defense operations in the Kalayaan Island Group. “Its upgraded Command Center, equipped with secure communications equipment and a satellite-based vessel tracking system, will further bolster our defense capabilities and ensure stability in the area,” Laciera said in a news conference. Lacierda said NSCC has been “slated for redevelopment,” which includes the rehabilitation of the pier, living quarters, and other support facilities. “These efforts are in line with the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), through which we hope to further improve our defense capacities,” he said. Angeline Quinto (MNS Photo) Quinto thought she would never sing again after she lost to Sarah Geronimo on “Star for a Night” 11 years ago. “Nanalo po si Sarah. Sa akin naman po kasi, sanay na ko doon. Once na sumali ka sa singing contest, dapat handa ka kasi na pwede kang matalo,” Quinto said. “Kaya lang po ‘yung tatay ko, ‘yung lola ko, nagkaroon sila ng expectations. Tapos natalo ako. Parang nagalit sila sa akin. Bakit daw ako hindi nanalo, hindi ko daw masyado inaral ‘yung kanta ko,” she recalled. “Pinapaliwanag ko naman sa kanila na dapat nga mas kayo ‘yung handa kaysa ako. Ang tagal nung time na ‘yun, umabot ng taon na ang sama ng loob ko sa kanila kasi ganun ‘yung tingin nila sa akin,” she added. Quinto, who was only 12 at the time, said she lost the drive to compete, especially since it was also her first time to join a televised singing contest. “Nawalan na ako ng gana.
