Albano slams muddling of Napoles list

Really?: An alleged photo of Jeane Napoles, daughter of Janet Lim-Napoles who is at the center of the pork barrel scam that involves lawmakers in the Philippines, as she is supposedly “bathing” in a tubful of money that has been circulating on the internet. This one was posted in en.wordpress.com. MANILA (Mabuhay) — Isabela Rep. Rodolfo “Rodito” Albano III on Tuesday said that the Napoles multi-billion peso scam has become a ludicrous, wacky and bizarre news serial already as more and more people claim to have the “authentic” list of wrong-doers. Albano bewailed the recent developments on the Napoles pork barrel scam which involves billions of pesos in congressional pork barrel funds allegedly lost to ghost projects. “Instead of getting to the bottom of the truth, things have been muddled and have become more complicated as events unfold by the day,” Albano, member of the House Minority Bloc, said. “Lahat na lang nagsasabi na may listahan. Si Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, si former Sen. Panfilo Lacson, even whistleblower Sandra Cam – they are all trying to muddle the issue. Hindi na natin alam kung alin talaga ang tunay na listahan,” Albano added. Since anybody could claim that they have the so-called ‘Napoles list,’ Albano stressed the need for a credible and competent group of experts to determine the authenticity of the controversial list. Turning mock-serious, Albano said: “It’s about time that we engaged the services of the authentication and valuation experts of the TV show “Pawn Stars” of the Read More …

41 more Pinoys home from strife-torn Syria

Ms. Hasmin Mama, one of the 37 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) repatriated from Syria, expresses gratitude to the Philippine government and Embassy personnel who helped them come home. These 37 female OFWs arrived Friday (March 7) afternoon via EK 332 of Emirates Airlines at the Gate 3 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.(MNS photo) MANILA (Mabuhay) – Another batch consisting of 41 Filipinos has been repatriated from Syria with the help of Philippine officials in Lebanon and Syria, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. The DFA said the Philippine embassies in Beirut, Lebanon and Damascus, Syria, worked with the International Organization for Migration to repatriate the 41 last May 6. “The departure of this group of 41 Filipinos brought to 2,305 the total number of Filipinos repatriated from Syria via the Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut since the first cross-border operations began on 12 December 2012,” it said in a news release. “This brings the total number of Filipinos repatriated from Syria to 5,334,” the DFA added. The DFA said the IOM shouldered the airfare and expenses for land transportation and meals of the repatriates. It added the May 6 operation was the 50th cross-border operation. A Reuters report said more than 150,000 people have been killed in the Syria conflict, which has become increasingly sectarian as rival regional powers have backed either President Bashar Hafez al-Assad, a member of the Shi’ite offshoot Alawite sect, or the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels who oppose him. Navarro again faces-off against Lee, Cornejo in bail-petition hearing

TV host and actor Vhong Navarro faced his alleged assailants Deniece Cornejo, Cedric Lee and Zimmer Raz for the second time during Friday’s bail-petition hearing at the Taguig Regional Trial Court, a report from GMA’s “24-Oras” program said Friday. Cornejo, Lee and Raz were charged with serious illegal detention, a non-bailable case. Nevertheless, the accused still filed their petition. Navarro first faced the suspects in a court hearing last May 6. “Hindi porket sumuko ay ibig sabihin ay bibigyan ka ng bail. They can cite a legal provision to that effect then they should present it to the court but they haven’t done so,” said Atty. Alma Mallonga, Navarro’s legal counsel Mallonga added that her client will pursue the case whatever the result of the petition. Aside from the bail petition, the court also tackled whether Cornejo should be transferred to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology facility in Taguig. She is currently being held at a detention center in Camp Crame. “Well it doesn’t matter as long as she is safe and siya ay ligtas [basta] walang danger to her life and limb,” Cornejo’s legal counsel, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, said. Aquino turns on first large-scale Bronzeoak solar power plant

Aquino was in San Carlos City where he led a ceremonial switch-on of the 22-megawatt (MW), $45-million San Carlos Solar Energy Inc. (SACASOL) (MNS Photo) MANILA, May 15 (Mabuhay) – The first large-scale, commercially-financed and -commissioned solar power plant in the Philippines was turned on by President Benigno Aquino III in Negros Occidental on Thursday amid a tight supply situation that continues to plague the country. Aquino was in San Carlos City where he led a ceremonial switch-on of the 22-megawatt (MW), $45-million San Carlos Solar Energy Inc. (SACASOL). Only the 13 MW first phase of the project was inaugurated Thursday. The second phase of the project, Phase 1B, consists of a 9-MW facility. Once complete, San Carlos Solar is expected to supply 35-million kilowatt hour of energy to the Visayas grid and to cover mainly the power needs of Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Cebu, and Iloilo. In his speech, Aquino said the Visayas grid will benefit from the 22-MW additional input from SACASOL, noting that, as a renewable energy project, the power plant is also expected to displace the equivalent of 14,805 tons of carbon emissions per year. “It serves as a shining example of the collective steps we are taking to minimize climate risk – the fruit of our efforts to ensure that future generations will not be subject to the same vulnerabilities as we are now [experiencing],” he said. Lacson calls for lifestyle check on Miriam

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago attends the Blue Ribbon Committee hearing of the P10 billion Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam Thursday, November 7. Santiago reminded Napoles that she cannot just invoke her right against self-incrimination MANILA, May 14 (Mabuhay) – Former Senator Panfilo Lacson said a lifestyle check is in order against Senator Miriam Santiago now that the Benhur Luy list is out. Santiago earlier called for the release of the Luy list amid the disclosure of the Janet Napoles list that Lacson is holding. On the Napoles list, Santiago’s name was not included. Her name is on Luy’s list, on the other hand. “Barely one day before Luy’s list came out, she was saying that the Luy’s list was more credible. Understandably, crooks often forget petty transactions since they would likely use the loot on less significant expenditures. They only remember the big ones that enter their fat bank accounts,” Lacson said in a statement. He said that since Luy’s list is now out, “the Senate’s self-proclaimed anti-pork ‘crusader’ must be quaking in her shoes while cracking her head thinking of some crazy pick-up lines to divert the issue from her P2.5M rebate aka kickback from her P10M allocation through a Napoles NGO.” Both Santiago and Lacson have been trading barbs through the media. Santiago said Lacson is the “attack dog” of the senators earlier implicated in the pork scam: Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada, and Bong Revilla. Chinese structure on Mabini Reef likely a military base – Defense chief

China conducts reclamation works on Mabini Reef. One of several photographs gathered by PHL intelligence sources and released by the Department of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, May 15, shows the extensive reclamation being done by China on Mabini Reef (Johnson South Reef). A building and a runway are also seen on the reef. The DFA said these actions are considered destabilizing and in violation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and international law. Mabini Reef is part of the Kalayaan Island Group which is inside Philippine territory. DFA Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Friday that he is “almost sure” that the Chinese government is building a military base in the disputed Johnson South Reef, locally known as Mabini Reef, which the Philippines claims as part of its territory. “Namo-monitor natin yan. Nag umpisa yan (China’s construction in Mabini Reef) February. Meron tayong monitoring na unti-unti dumadami yung mga gamit nila,” Gazmin said in an interview aired on GMA News’ “24 Oras” Friday evening. “As you probably have seen dun sa mga litrato, nagco-conduct sila ng reclamation –for whatever purpose, we still do not know. But we are almost sure that would be a base,” he said. On Thursday, the Department of Foreign Affairs released a series of photographs, which it said it obtained from intelligence sources, showing China’s reclamation works in Mabini Reef from March 13, 2012 to March 11, 2014. The DFA said it sent a note verbale to Beijing last month Read More …

Obama impatient on immigration reform

President Barack Obama scored a hit in the hearts of thousands of immigrants who pin their hopes on stabilizing their stay in their adopted country with a stroke of genius that also left the Republicans in a frantic mood to neutralize their “loss” in the immigration game. President Obama’s impatience, expressed through an executive order now known popularly as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), was an initiative he resorted sans Congressional support to rewrite the nations immigration laws to help millions who are in the U.S. illegally.  On June 15, 2012  he stopped the deportations of those who came to the U.S. when they were young. Obama’s action had both sides of the fence reacting. supporters of an immigration overhaul complainedthat his initiative hasn’t gone far enough while those opposed to his move claimed  he has gone too far and has accused him of “picking and choosing which laws to enforce.” Now comes the Obama administration’s plan to allow high-tech guest workers’ spouses to hold jobs in the U.S. hailed as “a way of keeping the United States globally competitive by making it a more attractive destination for people around the world whose expertise are in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math”.  Affected under the proposal are spouses of as many as 100,000 H1-B visa holders who are  highly skilled and are applying for permanent residence. The proposal announced recently will encourage highly skilled, specially trained individuals to remain in the United States and continue to support Read More …

Out of status applicants in U.S.A. eligible to apply

By Atty. Henry Moyal MOYAL & MOYAL Canadian Immigration Lawyers (screenshot courtesy of www.moyal.com) Q. I read that Canada’s immigration program is open and that there are many occupations in demand in Canada. I’m an experienced engineer and my wife is a manager. I believe we are qualified but need your final opinion. Most importantly, I am hesitant to apply because I am out of status here in Las Vegas. Can I file an application while I have no status? Do I need to leave the USA to do my medical? A. The most important part of the assessment is to determine if you are qualified under the new rules. If you are not, then the issue of your status becomes irrelevant. That being said, you are correct in saying that Canada has recently opened its policy to a wide array of occupations. Many occupations which have not been in demand before are now in high demand. Similarly, engineers and managers are always in high demand in Canada. If you have at least one year of full time work experience (within the last ten years) and a strong level of English then you are eligible to apply. No job offer is required. No relative in Canada is required (to petition you). Finally, a person’s status in USA is not a factor. If you have lost status in USA you are still eligible to apply. We have been successful in doing so many, many times. You also do not need to leave USA to obtain medical or police clearances. Q. What are the benefits of applying to Canada vs. USA immigration? Claudine opens up about ‘heartless’ Gretchen

Claudine Barretto (MNS Photo) After being evasive for months since the Barretto family feud erupted last year, Claudine Barretto finally broke her silence on Sunday, as she accused her sister Gretchen of being “heartless” and a “liar.” Claudine revealed how her tiff Gretchen began back in 2010. “Nagpadala siya ng ambulansya sa bahay namin ni Raymart with a pediatrician. I was with my friends, we were eating. Kilala ko, pediatrician ‘to ni Gretchen. Pumunta ako sa gate, nakita ko nandoon si Marjorie (Barretto), nandoon si Gretchen. Sabi ni Gretchen, ‘Can I please go in?’ Since kapatid ko naman siya, kahit hindi kami okay, pinapasok ko. I didn’t know what this was all about. Pagpasok nila, later dumating na ‘yung pediatrician with the ambulance and I think there were eight men inside,” she said. “I asked my sister, ‘What is this? What are you gonna get me for?’ She just looked at her doctor and she said, ‘Do something.’ I knew my rights, she was trespassing. Sabi ko sa kanila, ‘Saan, sa drug addiction or sa mental illness?’ Kasi hindi ko alam. And then sabi niya ‘Basta doc, nag-overdose iyan,’” Claudine continued. However, Marjorie clarified this 2010 incident in a statement. “Claudine, for your information, mom and dad begged us to rush to your house because your personal assistant told them you’ve finished all your anti-anxiety medicines. We had with us a doctor and an ambulance from a very reputable hospital because we didn’t want you to die, Claudine. We were Read More …
